Grapher: Function plotter and ordinary differential equation solver

The user can input systems of algebraic equations or systems of ordinary first order differential equations, which are solved using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta procedure. All solutions are presented graphically, but a magnification feature and the ability to select and print a screen position with the mouse make available quantitative solutions almost to the accuracy of the algorithm. GRAPHER evaluates the equations and plots any chosen variable against any other chosen variable. Initial conditions can be specified by pointing with the mouse. There is a built-in desk calculator which can be used for specifying constants or initial conditions. An on-line help document (obtained from a menu item) provides detailed instructions and also provides mouse-copyable examples which can be run. Examples are from ordinary Newtonian mechanics, from chaotic dynamics, such as the Lorenz equations, and iterative maps such as the Henon map, and from optics (by Professor N. S. VanderVen). This is a very early "Andrew" program with a number of limitations. The differential equation feature doesn't work on a Vax. The authors intend to rewrite the program in CMU Tutor when scrolling text becomes available. The program has been used by students in upper-level and graduate physics courses at Carnegie Mellon.
