  25. The subdirectories should indicate what it is they hold.  It is possible
  26. to find the same program in different subdirectories.  This was done if the
  27. file served more than one category.  With-in a subdirectory there are some
  28. duplicates -- a different version or a different name for the same program.
  29.  
  30. HILITE DIRECTORY:
  31. This directory has programs that we really liked.  They are not necessarily
  32. the best -- though some are certainly are the best -- but each one had some-
  33. thing special we wanted to bring to your attention.  This directory alone,
  34. could justify the disk.

  36.                ******** T O   U S E   T H E   D I S C ********

  38. The disc is organized into three sections.  IBM, MAC, COMMODORE.  The IBM
  39. comprises the vast majority of the disc.  The IBM works from the the root
  40. of the disc while MAC and COMMODORE have their own trees.
  41. The IBM files are provided with a utility called `PICK' that will aid in 
  42. the interrogation and unarchiving of these 11,000 files. (Read on for details
  43. on the use of this.)
  44. The MAC and COMMODORE files have no help utilities.  They do have detailed 
  45. catalogs that can be searched with any ASCII text editor.  It is anticipated
  46. that the main use of these will be on BBS systems.
  47. All the IBM files are "ZIPPED" using PKWARE's PKZIP 1.01(c) utility.
  48. Some of these zipped files will have files that are yet again zipped or 
  49. in very rare instances, ARC'd, LBR'd or ?Q? (squished).  In most non-standard
  50. cases, the proper unarchiving utility is provided in the zipped collection.
  51. If not, you can find what is needed in the FILE UTILITY section.
  52. The MAC files are, for the most part, in a SIT format (the STUFF-IT) utility.
  53. Every MAC subdirectory has a copy of the UN-STUFF-IT utility as one of it's 
  54. files (called UNSTUFFI.BIN).
  55. The COMMODORE files are in a variety of formats.  It is assumed COMMODORE 
  56. users will have the necessary utilities to unarchive.
  57.  
  58. THE REST OF THIS DISCUSSION DEALS ONLY WITH THE IBM-TYPE FILES. 
  59.  
  60. To use the disk means you need to know only two things.
  61.   1.)  How to read/search the catalogs.
  62.   2.)  How to unzip a file.
  63.  
  64. There are 5 ways to read/search the catalogs.
  65.   1.)  Use the DOS 'TYPE' command.  This is the WORST way to search it.
  66.        -Log into the directory you wish to use and type 'TYPE [filename.cat]'
  67.        -Have your finger on the pause button and scroll through the output.
  68.  
  69.   2.)  Use a text editor, word processor or text lister to bring up the
  70.        desired catalog.
  71.        -The catalogs are located in each directory or you can use the
  72.          MASTER.CAT in the root directory.  The MASTER.CAT has every file
  73.          in the IBM section, including the graphics.  This will give you 
  74.          all the files, where they are located, the file size and
  75.          a brief description of each file.
  76.        -You can scroll it or you can do a 'WORD SEARCH' to more quickly
  77.          and specifically find what you are looking for.

  79.    3.)  PRINT the Catalog ([filename.cat] or MASTER.cat) and search it
  80.         manually.
  81.  
  82.    4.)  Use the PICK utility supplied in the root directory of the disk.

  85.    5.)  A very efficient way of searching the catalogs is to use the DOS
  86.         command 'FIND'.  Type FIND "PKZIP" MASTER.CAT and observe.  Then
  87.         try FIND "LIST" MASTER.CAT -- have your finger on the PAUSE button.

  89. HOW TO UNZIP A FILE.
  90. There are 3 ways to unzip a file.
  91.  
  92.   1.)  The most efficient way is to use the PICK utilitity that is supplied
  93.        in the root directory of the disc.

  96.   2.)  You can manually unzip a file using PKUNZIP [command line options].
  97.        Example (from the root directory): PKUNZIP \HILITE\LIST64.ZIP  C:\
  98.        This will unzip the LIST64.ZIP program to the root directory of the
  99.        C: drive.
  100.  
  101.   3.)  If you care to register it, ZIPGUN, a program located in the collection
  102.        presents you with a shell to use all the PKZIP utilities.
  103.        This is a good point-and-shoot utility that will let you use the
  104.        utilities to their fullest without having to learn all the command
  105.        line syntax.
  106.  
  107. That is about all there is to it.  As you use the disc, you will quickly
  108. become proficient in finding what you are looking for.  There are so many
  109. files on the disc, intimacy with any one section or type will be hard.  The
  110. PICK program or a text lister and the MASTER.CAT will become your best allies
  111. in finding "just the right program".
