  8. In Christian (and non-Christian) circles, there is much discussion 
  9. about a person called "The Antichrist." He is a really "terrible guy"
  10. it seems, that will control the world and fight with God, as well as 
  11. issue "The Mark of the Beast." These are rather naive views, and also
  12. a bit misleading and inaccurate. In this study, we'll take a look at 
  13. just who this character is, and what he'll be up to.

  28. -More-It is our position that the Church will not need to recognize The 
  29. Antichrist at all. We believe that the Church will be with Jesus 
  30. Christ when The Antichrist appears on the scene. So for the church, 
  31. the reason to study The Antichrist is to gain a fuller understanding 
  32. of prophecy.

  34. In this study, we will seek to do just that. We will look at what the
  35. Bible has to say about this guy, as opposed to what you may have seen
  36. and heard through the secular media.

  39. NAMES OF THE ANTICHRIST
  40.  
  41. "The Greek preposition, 'anti', in composition, sometimes denotes 
  42. substitution, 'taking the place of another;' hence, 'false Christ.' 
  43. The connection in which the word is used appears to import 
  44. opposition, covert rather than avowed, with a professed 
  45. friendliness." (Unger's Bible Dictionary)
  46.  
  47. The word is used only by the Apostle John (1John 2:22 and 2John 7) 
  48. and literally means "against Christ" or "instead of Christ."
  49.  
  50. There are two contexts in which the word is used. One context is "the
  51. spirit of antichrist" in which "many antichrists have gone into the 
  52. world." In this context, anyone who opposes or attempts to substitute
  53. anything for Christ is an antichrist. In this sense, cults would be 
  54. considered to be antichrists. This is not the context we seek to look
  55. into here. Instead, we wish to look at a very specific antichrist.

  57. To be precise, this "Antichrist" is called a whole lot of other 
  58. names:
  59.     The Seed of Satan (Genesis 3:15)
  60.     The Little Horn (Daniel 7:8)
  61.     The King of Fierce Countenance (Daniel 8:23)
  62.     The Prince That Shall Come (Daniel 9:26)
  63.     The Desolator (Daniel 9:27)
  64.     The Willfull King (Daniel 11:36)
  65.     The Man of Sin (2Thessalonians 2:3)
  66. -More-    The Son of Perdition (2Thessalonians 2:3)
  67.     The Lawless One (2Thessalonians 2:8)
  68.     The Antichrist (1John 2:22)
  69.     The Beast (Revelation 11:7)
  70.     The Assyrian (Isaiah 14)
  71.     The First Horseman (Revelation 5)
  72.     The Wicked One (2Thessalonians 2:3-8)
  73.     The Idol Shepherd (Zechariah 11:17)

  78. THE SATANIC TRINITY
  79.  
  80. Some Bible Scholars find it amusing to see a Satanic Trinity in 
  81. prophecy. While this is useful, it is important to understand that 
  82. while this "Satanic Trinity" really is an attempt to copy God, we 
  83. should be careful to remember that it is in no way equal to God. 
  84. Satan could be squished by God in a hot flat second if God so 
  85. desired.

  87. "The Satanic Trinity," then, in prophecy includes Satan, The Beast, 
  88. and The False Prophet. They are not the same person with different 
  89. names. The Beast and The False Prophet are men. Revelation 13 
  90. describes them, showing the difference between them. The Beast is a 
  91. political leader who is eventually worshiped by the world. The False 
  92. Prophet causes the world to worship The Beast, and issues "The Mark 
  93. of the Beast." In Revelation 20, The Beast and The False Prophet are 
  94. thrown alive into a lake of fire. Satan is bound and thrown into the 
  95. bottomless pit for 1000 years. From that point on, The Beast and 
  96. False Prophet are never heard from again. Satan is released for a 
  97. time at the end of the 1000 years.

  100. ORIGIN OF THE ANTICHRIST
  101.  
  102. The Beast (or Antichrist) will probably be a Gentile political 
  103. figure. We say "probably Gentile" because of Revelation 13:1, where 
  104. -More-he "rises up out of the sea", as opposed to the False Prophet who 
  105. comes up "out of the earth". The sea is sometimes used in the Bible 
  106. as a picture of the world at large, while the term "the land" or "the
  107. earth" is used primarily of Israel.

  109. Along with that, The Antichrist is the final leader of the "times of 
  110. the Gentiles". This would tend to indicate a Gentile leader, as 
  111. opposed to a Jewish leader.
  112.  
  113. In Daniel 9:26-27, The Antichrist is called "the prince that shall 
  114. come". In this case, we see "the people" of the prince prophesied to 
  115. destroy Jerusalem. This being fulfilled in 70 A.D. by the Romans also
  116. indicates that The Antichrist is a Gentile, and somehow associated 
  117. with the Romans (Italians), or with that future kingdom (European).

  119. The Antichrist is also shown to be of super-natural origin. If we 
  120. look at Genesis 3:15, we see the Antichrist being called "the seed of
  121. Satan". This implies that The Antichrist will be a "demon baby". Now 
  122. don't get all upset over this. It isn't the first time for this to 
  123. happen. God sent the flood in Genesis 6 because all flesh was 
  124. corrupt. We've also actually heard of cases of real "Rosemary's Baby"
  125. incidents. In 2Thessalonians 2:9, we see further evidence of the 
  126. supernatural origin of The Antichrist. In the passage, the word 
  127. "working" is the word "energeo", meaning "to energize". Thus, we have
  128. a counterfeit of The Virgin Birth of Christ.

  130. So, we have determined the following origin of The Antichrist:
  131.     1. He is a Gentile
  132.     2. He is of at least European background
  133.     3. He has a supernatural origin

  136. RECOGNIZING THE ANTICHRIST
  137.  
  138. It seems that every so often someone comes up with a new way of 
  139. pointing a finger at someone and calling him the Antichrist, be it 
  140. Henry Kissinger, Adolf Hitler, Napolean, Nixon or computers. Every 
  141. new president of the United States gets called that at one time or 
  142. -More-another by some nitwit organization who's figured out a way to play 
  143. games with the number 666. And so far, they've all been wrong.

  145. Scripturally, the identity of the Antichrist will not be revealed 
  146. until the Holy Spirit in the Church be "taken out of the way." 
  147. (2Thessalonians 2:3-8)
  148.  
  149. We understand from Daniel 7 and 8, and Revelation 13 that The 
  150. Antichrist is a European multi-national ruler. You will find in other
  151. studies available on the Manna System, that the Bible teaches that 
  152. there will be a future one-world government, which will break into 
  153. ten pieces (Daniel 2). During this ten kingdom stage, The Antichrist 
  154. rises to power. Perhaps violently, he uproots three of these 
  155. kingdoms, while the other seven submit to his rule. (Daniel 2 and 7)
  156.  
  157. Daniel 8:23 says that he will be able to understand "dark sentences",
  158. like Daniel and Solomon did.
  159.  
  160. Daniel 9:27 gives another conclusive identifying feature of the 
  161. Antichrist. That is, he will "confirm covenant" with "the many", 
  162. meaning Israel, for seven years. What does it mean to "confirm 
  163. covenant"? We don't know for sure much more than that this is some 
  164. kind of treaty. We infur from the successive text that he may be 
  165. authorizing animal sacrifice in Israel. By this time, the church will
  166. not be on earth. This seven year treaty with Israel marks the 
  167. beginning of the 70th Week of Daniel, or The Tribulation.

  169. So then, a candidate for The Antichrist must have the following 
  170. credentials before the beginning of the 70th Week of Daniel.
  171.     1. Gentile Origin (most likely European)
  172.     2. Supernatural Birth
  173.     3. Ten Kingdom World Ruler (after a one-world government)
  174.     4. Understands Dark Sentences
  175.     5. Makes a seven year treaty with Israel
  176.  
  177. It must also be remembered that just because some person in the 
  178. future happens to do all five of these things does not conclusively 
  179. mean he is the Antichrist. 2Thessalonians says that he will not be 
  180. -More-revealed until the rapture of the church, which occurs before the 
  181. 70th Week of Daniel.

  184. CAREER OF THE ANTICHRIST
  185.  
  186. The Antichrist is always shown speaking great things, magnifying 
  187. himself over God, and blaspheming Him. (Daniel 7:8, 7:25, 8:11, 
  188. 11:36, 2Thessalonians 2:4, Revelation 13:5-6). 
  189.  
  190. He will apparently be assassinated, then resurrected from the dead. 
  191. Whether or not he really dies is another issue. Satan does not hold 
  192. the key to life, but will attempt a counterfeit resurrection, which, 
  193. even if it was really a resurrection, is incomplete since The 
  194. Antichrist will have a darkened right eye and a dried up arm. 
  195. (Zechariah 11:17, Revelation 13:3)

  197. He will break his covenant with Israel in the midst of the week, or 
  198. after 3 and a half years. (Daniel 9:27, 11:21-31)

  200. He will commit the Abomination of Desolation. (Daniel 11:31, Matthew 
  201. 24:15)

  203. He will kill the Two Witnesses. (Revelation 11:7)
  204.  
  205. He will be worshiped by all non-believers. There will be no "neutral 
  206. people". They will either worship the Beast, or they will worship 
  207. God. (Revelation 13:8)

  209. He will make war with the saints and decapitate those who will not 
  210. take the Mark of the Beast. (Revelation 13:7, 20:4)

  213. DESTINY OF THE ANTICHRIST
  214.  
  215. Revelation 19:19 tells us that The Antichrist leads a number of 
  216. armies to Armageddon to make war with Jesus Christ.
  217.  
  218. -More-In Revelation 19:20, The Antichrist is taken, and with him The False 
  219. Prophet. They are cast alive into a lake of fire burning with 
  220. brimstone, becoming the first residents of this place.  On Judgment 
  221. Day (Revelation 20:7-15), first Satan, then all unbelievers join them
  222. (Revelation 20:10, 15).
