  3.    Hebrew-yirah Greek-phobos

  5.    The word FEAR in English has two principal meanings:
  6.  
  7.    1) That apprehension of evil which normally either leads one to flee
  8. or to fight.
  9.  
  10.    2) That awe or reverence a man of sense feels in the presence of
  11. God, and to a lesser extent in the presence of a king or other dread
  12. authority.
  13.  
  14.    A child feels the first of these in the presence of a cruel parent,
  15. and the second before one who is good, but who also must be just. There
  16. are 15 different Hebrew nouns which are rendered "fear" in the KJV, but
  17. in the New Testament the Greek "phobos" is used in both senses (Matt
  18. 14:26, and Rom 3:18). For the two senses in the Old Testament see Psalm
  19. 31:13 and Proverbs 9:10.
