  1. EXP:What is PHARMAKEIA?  by David Canfil

  3.    In response to the question, *pharmakeia* is the Gk. word that's
  4. translated 'witchcraft' or 'sorcery' in Gal. 5.20, i.e. one of the
  5. 'works of the flesh'. This Gk. word is the source of our Eng. words
  6. like 'pharmacy', 'pharmaceutical', etc. Drugs are inferred.
  7.  
  8.    The study of the origin and development of words (called
  9. 'Etymology') can sometimes mislead as much as clarify. But narcotics
  10. and hallucinogenic drugs were not uncommon in NT times. For instance,
  11. the Oracles of Delphi apparently used *Datura* during their quests for
  12. visions. This is the scientific, Latin classification of Jimson weed.
  13. It contains powerful alkaloids (biochemical bases of vegetable origin
  14. which include many other drugs, quite a number of which have narcotic
  15. or hallucinogenic effects: e.g. mescaline, cocaine, morphine, etc.,
  16. etc.).

  18.    In Carlos Casteneda's books about his anthropological research with
  19. a Yaqui Indian 'brujo' (Spanish for 'witch', or 'sorcerer'), we
  20. encounter Datura being employed for vision quests. The sorcerer also
  21. uses mescaline, and various other substances.

  23.    Now, the majority of people abusing drugs today aren't using the
  24. drugs as parts of deliberate supernatural rituals, but for 'recreation'.
  25.  
  26.    The supernatural, however, is inescapable whether a person believes
  27. in it or not.
  28.  
  29.    One form of worship today which doesn't seem like religion at first,
  30. but which is very common and which does in fact have supernatural
  31. significance, is Self. People love pleasures rather than God. When we
  32. are selfish it does no harm to God, it hurts us.

  34.    Much drug use today begins as a quest for self-absorbed pleasure, or
  35. escape. The drugs are not inherently evil in themselves. The evil
  36. emerges from unredeemed hearts and minds as they commit spiritual
  37. adultery.

  39.    The enemy tries to fuel these processes along, trying to bring
  40. people under physical, psychological and spiritual bondage. Satanists
  41. are often involved in chains of supply, and they are involved in two
  42. ways.
  43.  
  44.    First of all, people covenanted with the evil one are often the
  45. actual suppliers of drugs. Noticed how it often happens that
  46. authorities arrest users, dealers and smugglers, but very seldom the
  47. actual, original suppliers? They seem 'protected', and are, by dark
  48. forces.

  50.    Secondly, just as Christians seek God's will and blessings on their
  51. enterprises, satanists often dose drug operations and the drugs
  52. themselves with 'energy', i.e. spells, seeking their master's purposes.
  53. People who are not believers in anything then obtain and use the drugs,
  54. and they are extremely vulnerable.
  55.  
  56.    I'm not communicating speculations here, and share things not
  57. ordinarily suspected or understood. As we seek to serve our Lord Jesus
  58. Christ in the world, satanists seek to serve their master. We seek
  59. souls. They do too. We seek to free captives. They seek to captivate
  60. and bring souls under bondage.

  62.    Drugs can be 'useful' operations. Also grab lots of money. The mafia
  63. and others who help supply the drugs think they are getting power, but
  64. actually a power is using them.
  65.  
  66.    Finally, it has to be said that kids are RIGHT to seek meanings
  67. beyond the 'normal' values of middle-class American life, beyond the
  68. values of personal affluence plus personal 'happiness' plus nothing.
  69. But drugs aren't the answer. They aren't a satisfactory alternative.
