  2.    Doctrine: Spiritual Blessings

  4.   1. DEFINITION.
  5.  
  6.     Spiritual blessings are the non-physical God given assets for the
  7. Christian way of life (wealth, resources, and benefits). God designed
  8. them in eternity past and then freely gives them to every church age
  9. believer in Jesus Christ.  God gives them so that every believer may
  10. live on earth in a way that is compatible with his union with Christ,
  11. who is now in heaven (Eph 1.3-8; 2 Pet 2.2-4; Rev 2.9).

  15.    2.1. Eph 1.3-8.

  17.     2.1.1. The persons directly mentioned are God the Father (who
  18. blesses), and believers (who are blessed).
  19.  
  20.     2.1.2.  The verb HAS BLESSED (eulog8sas, aorist active participle
  21. used as a noun, from eulogew, BAG 322) means to speak well of, to
  22. praise, to extol, to call down God's gracious power. When God is the
  23. subject it means that He gave His benefits. God is the subject here.

  25.     2.1.3. WITH EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING (en pas8 eulogia
  26. pneumatikos). EVERY (Pas) refers to both individual and the whole, and
  27. so to each and every blessing. SPIRITUAL (pneumatikos, BAG 678) refers
  28. to something that has to do with the Holy Spirit, human spirit,
  29. spirit-like, or evil spirits. Here it refers to benefits that are from
  30. God (spirit) through the Holy Spirit. They are spiritual because they
  31. come from God and are for God's kind of life in the believer. They are
  32. apart from mankind's physical efforts or plans. BLESSING (eulogia, BAG
  33. 322) refers to blessings as benefits given by God.

  35.     2.1.4. IN THE HEAVENLIES (en tois epouraniois, Eph 1.3, 20; 2.6;
  36. 3.10; 6.12) has the meaning of sphere or place. The blessings come
  37. from heaven where Christ is now seated. They are heaven like.

  39.     2.1.5. IN CHRIST (en Christw). This is a prepositional phrase,
  40. dative of sphere. This speaks of union, relationship with Christ (who
  41. is now seated in heaven at the Father's right hand). Christ is the
  42. person in whom and through whom believers have the benefits. Without
  43. being related to Christ, no spiritual blessings will come.

  45.     2.1.6. The spiritual blessings are part of the Plan of God for the
  46. church age believer. HE CHOSE US...HE PREDESTINED US...ACCORDING TO
  47. HIS WILL...HE FREELY BESTOWED (Eph 1.4-6).

  49.    2.2. Revelation 2.9. BUT YOU ARE RICH refers to the spiritual
  50. wealth (spiritual blessings) that believers have even though they may
  51. be materially poor.

  53.    2.3. 2 Peter 1.3-4. God the Father by His divine attributes freely
  54. gave each believer everything that is necessary for eternal life and
  55. for godlikeness now. Believers know and use these benefits by a true
  56. knowledge about God and His Plan.

  182.   4. The spiritual blessings form the believers spiritual position of
  183. strength. This means that believers live life from a strong, reliable
  184. base that will support, protect, and provide continued momentum for
  185. the Christian way of life. The outline for the position of strength
  186. includes the plan of God (eternal, historical, daily), union with
  187. Christ/family of God, God's blessings (spiritual and physical), and
  188. heavenly citizenship with (spiritual base, mission, confidence).

  190.   5. Application: Believers have everything necessary (spiritual
  191. blessings) to live the Christian way of life and therefore to fulfill
  192. God's purpose, to enjoy stability, contentment, and happiness, to live
  193. as winners in time on earth.  Since this is a fact, believers should
  194. know what the blessings are and fully use them.
