  2.           CHRISTIAN SENSITIVITY
  3.  
  4.      Deference is an area in which evangelical or
  5. fundamental Christians are often weak.  We glory in our
  6. "freedom in Christ", and forget sometimes that what we may
  7. indulge in with moderation will be excused in excess by
  8. those who observe us, including our children.
  9.  
  10.      While refusing to compromise on matters central to the
  11. gospel (see Galatians 2:5), the apostle Paul voluntarily
  12. limited his freedoms in other areas in order to reach as
  13. many people as possible with the gospel.
  14.  
  15.      He wrote, "Though I am free, and belong to no man, I
  16. make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as
  17. possible." (I Corinthians 9:19 NIV)
  18.  
  19.      In the context of what he wrote to the church at
  20. Corinth, Paul said that he was willing to adapt to a wide
  21. variety of circumstances and conditions in order to
  22. minimize objections to his person or his message.
  23.      We Christians are sometimes guilty of a lack of
  24. sensitivity to other Christian groups or the culture or
  25. customs or preferences of people we are trying to reach
  26. with the gospel.
  27.      Some of the most common areas of sensitivity are modes
  28. of relating to the opposite sex, the handling of money and
  29. food, appropriate subjects for humor, and ways of
  30. discussing differences between racial and cultural groups.
  31.  
  32.      Let's learn how to put our Christianity into practice
  33. by simply being considerate and kind to the people around
  34. us.
  35.      Our message is much more than "Be Nice," but if we
  36. "come over" as being insensitive and obnoxious, nobody will
  37. listen to us when we speak of God's love in the Lord Jesus
  38. Christ.
  39.      Our message is important enough to put on a tie, and
  40. if necessary, endure a shave and a haircut.
  41.      We would like to "win" you over, too.  Our message is
  42. based on the Bible, and we invite you to start reading in
  43. the New Testament.
