  1.                     ADAM -- REPRESENTATIVE MAN

  3.                      (FIRST ADAM, LAST ADAM)
  4.  
  5.  
  6.    Adam was more than a normal man; he was a "representative
  7. man."  Adam was a progenitor, the federal head, the prototype,
  8. the master copy, the "representative" of the first human race. 
  9. What he did stood for us all.
  10.  
  11.    In this study, all scriptures are from the New International
  12. Version unless otherwise noted.

  14.  
  15. Romans 5:12  Therefore, just as sin entered the world through    
  16.    one man, and death through sin, and in this way      death
  17.    came to all men, because all sinned....
  18.  
  19. Amplified   Therefore as sin came into the world through one man 
  20.             and death as the result of sin, so death spread to  
  21.             all men, [no one being able to stop it or to escape 
  22.             its power] because all men sinned.
  23.  
  24. A. S. Way   The error of one individual man made the breach
  25.             through which sin entered our world; and in the track
  26.             of sin came death.  So it was that death passed
  27.             through that door to assail all men....
  28.  
  29. KJV         Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, 
  30.             and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, 
  31.             for that all have sinned
  32.  
  33.  
  34.    Because Adam was not a normal man, but a "representative"
  35. man, we see that death ruled as king thru the law of sin and
  36. death because of his original sin.
  37.  
  38. Romans 5:14  Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to 
  39.    the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin   by
  40.    breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a        pattern of
  41.    the one to come.
  42.  
  43. Amplified   Yet death held sway from Adam to Moses [the         
  44.             Lawgiver], even over those who did not themselves   
  45.             transgress [a positive command] as Adam did.  Adam  
  46.             was a type (prefigure) of the One Who was to come....

  49.    We see here in verse 14 that as Adam was a representative man,
  50. so too Christ is a representative man.  So herein is the basis
  51. for the gospel.  Since, if one man (Adam) got us into sin and
  52. death, so too, one man (Jesus) can get us out.

  54. Romans 5:15-19:
  55.  
  56. v 15  But the gift is not like the trespass.  For if the many   
  57. died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's   
  58. grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man,   
  59. Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!
  60.  
  61. Amplified   But God's free gift is not at all to be compared to 
  62.             the trespass--His grace is out of all proportion to 
  63.             the fall of man.  For if many died through one man's 
  64.             falling away--his lapse, his offense--much more     
  65.             profusely did God's grace and the free gift [that   
  66.             comes] through the undeserved favor of the one Man  
  67.             Jesus Christ, abound and overflow to and for [the   
  68.             benefit of] many.

  70. v 16  Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one   
  71. man's sin:  The judgment followed one sin and brought  
  72. condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and   
  73. brought justification.
  74.  
  75. v 17  For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned   
  76. through that one man, how much more will those who receive   
  77. God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of  
  78. righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.
  79.  
  80. Amplified   For if, because of one man's trespass (lapse,       
  81.             offense) death reigned through that one, much more  
  82.             surely will those who receive [God's] overflowing   
  83.             grace (unmerited favor) and the free gift of        
  84.             righteousness (putting them into right standing with
  85.             Himself) reign as kings in life through the One,
  86.             Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One.

  89. v 18  Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was   
  90. condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of   
  91. righteousness was justification that brings life for all men.
  92.  
  93. Amplified   Well then, as one man's trespass--one man's false   
  94.             step and falling away--[led] to condemnation for all 
  95.             men, so one Man's act of righteousness [leads] to   
  96.             acquittal and right standing with God, and life for 
  97.             all men.
  98.  
  99. v 19  For just as through the disobedience of the one man the   
  100. many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the   
  101. one man the many will be made righteous.
  102.  
  103. Amplified   For just as by one man's disobedience (failing to   
  104.             hear, heedlessness and carelessness) the many were  
  105.             constituted sinners, so by one Man's obedience the  
  106.             many will be constituted righteous--made acceptable 
  107.             to God, brought into right standing with Him.

  109.    We see this representative man idea laid out for us in...
  110.  
  111. 1 Corinthians 15:21, 22:
  112.  
  113. v 21  For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the
  114. dead comes also through a man.
  115.  
  116. v 22  For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made   
  117. alive.
  118.  
  119. Amplified   For just as [because of union of nature] in Adam all 
  120.             people die, so also [by virtue of their union of    
  121.             nature] shall all in Christ be made alive.
  122.  
  123.    In verse 45 Christ is called the "last Adam" making reference
  124. to his role as "Representative Man."
  125.  
  126. v 45  So it is written:  "The first man Adam became a living   
  127. being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
  128.  
  129. Amplified   Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a     
  130.             living being--an individual personality; the last   
  131.             Adam (Christ) became a life-giving Spirit--restoring 
  132.             the dead to life.

  135.    Jesus made reference to himself as the last Adam in many terms
  136. we fail to recognize.  For example:
  137.  
  138. John 15:1  "I AM the true vine, and my Father is the gardener."
  139.  
  140.    (We see the contrast in Jeremiah 2:21:  ...corrupt, wild
  141. vine....)
  142.  
  143.    Also, we see in John 12:24 (a grain of life, planted in death,
  144. to bring forth many).
  145.  
  146. v 24  I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the
  147. ground and dies, it remains only a single seed.  But if it   
  148. dies, it produces many seeds.
  149.  
  150. (Contrast to Matthew 3:10:  ...ax laid to the root of the
  151. "corrupt" tree.)

  154.    So we see that the entire plan of redemption revolves around
  155. two men.  The basis of the gospel is that through faith in what
  156. one man--the God-man Jesus Christ--did, all men could be saved
  157. (the second Adam--the second representative man.)
