INS:Reigning with Christ
Romans 5:17
Reign - BASILEUO - to exercise kingly rule; to have kingly
power.
I. Why is it that before we are saved, we have no ability to
reign with Christ?
A. Because we are dead. (v. 12)
1. Dead in trespasses and sins. (Eph. 2:1-5)
2. No ability to do spiritual good.
B. Because we are ungodly. (vv. 6,8)
1. We are lawbreakers. (Gal. 3:10)
2. We do not seek after righteousness. (Rom. 3:9-18)
C. Because we are at enmity with God. (v. 10)
D. Because we are descended from Adam. (vv. 12,14,15)
E. Because we stand condemned and condemned men cannot
reign! (v. 16)
II. What happens to give us the ability to reign with Christ?
A. The Law of God was given so that we might see our
sinfulness and our condemnation. (v. 20)
1. The Law did not make people righteous.
(Gal. 3:11)
2. The Law was given to magnify sin.
(Gal. 3:19)
B. Christ came and perfectly obeyed the Law, even to the
point of death. (vv. 6,8,19)
1. Christ was born under Law in order to redeem
those under Law. (Gal. 3:4,5)
2. The result of his redemption is that we are
adopted as sons.
C. If we place our faith and trust in Christ, we are
justified and no longer stand condemned. (v. 1)
(Romans 8:1)
D. Being justified, we have peace with God. (v. 1)
E. We are reconciled back into a right relationship
with God. (vv. 10,11)
F. Therefore, by being united to Christ, we are
JUSTIFIED, RECONCILED, AT PEACE WITH GOD, and ADOPTED
AS SONS. We can now therefore, enjoy all the rights
and privileges of our Father's house.
1. No longer held by the chains of sin, but gripped
by the bonds of sovereign love.
2. No longer under the judicial wrath of God, but
under the loving mercy of God.
3. No longer do we live on Mt. Sinai, but upon Mt.
Zion.
4. No longer do we languish away in the dungeon of
a vengeful king, but in the spacious home of the
Father where we grow from one degree of glory to
another.
5. No longer is the certificate of death written
over our heads, but we now hold in our hands the
certificate of pardon.
Shedd: "If the union with Adam in his sin was certain to
bring destruction, the union with Christ in his
righteousness is yet more certain to bring salvation."
III. What does it mean to reign in life with Christ?
A. We now rejoice in the hope that is ours. (v. 2)
1. The hope of eternal life.
2. The hope of assurred victory.
B. We are able to rejoice in our tribulations. (v. 3)
1. Tribulation produces perseverance.
2. Perseverance produces character.
3. Character produces hope.
C. We now live in the realm of grace, not of law.
(vv. 20,21)
1. The pedagogue of the law is no longer around
to beat us.
2. Love is now the motivating factor of obedience.
APPLICATIONS:
1. When tempted to despair and to be discouraged, we must
grasp a firm hold onto our hope. Victory is assurred.
2. We need to avail ourselves of all the goods and riches of
our Father's house. We need to enjoy life and the good
things God has given to us.
3. When tribulations come we must look upon them as being for
our good; as another opportunity to become more like
Christ.
4. When we sin, instead of heaping subjective guilt upon
ourselves, we must confess our sin, repent, and develop a
godly sorrow which leads to a change in our lives for God's
glory. We must learn to rely upon the unspotted
righteousness of Christ which has been imparted and
imputed to us.
5. While we are to develop and cultivate the grace of humility
we must also lives as conquering kings and priests who are
awaiting the coronation day and coming of our blessed Lord.
