WAR:Corporate supporters of planned parenthood
"The pro-life movement will only succeed to the extent that pro-life
people are willing to be inconvenienced."
It has become increasingly popular for major American and
international corporations to make financial contributions to Planned
Parenthood. The nation's leading proponent of legal abortion, Planned
Parenthood places a high emphasis on gaining such sponsorship, at which
it has been highly successful. Pro- life advocates should understand
that their patronage enables the corporations to support Planned
Parenthood.
Corporate leaders attempt to justify their donations by saying the
funds are not being used for abortions, but rather for Planned
Parenthood's ongoing "educational"programs. While this is generally
true, donations still place the corporation in the position of being
seen as a supporter of a group that does abortions, even if the
corporation is not funding them directly. Moreover, in most if not all
cases, budgeting procedures allow Planned Parenthood clinics to
transfer unrestricted funds to abortion and abortion advocacy projects
because the funds for its "educational"programs are being paid for with
restricted corporate grants. It should be noted that Planned
Parenthood's "educational" programs are highly controversial, as well.
Your letters and calls to "Corporate America" do make a differ-
ence. After 18 months of correspondence between the Christian Action
Council and AT&T, and following a massive letter writing effort by
concerned citizens across America, AT&T announced in March 1990 that
after 25 years of long-standing support, it will no longer contribute
to Planned Parenthood.
Burke Stinson, spokesman for AT&T and its philanthropic founda-
tion, was quoted in the Washington Times as saying, "Our own people
expressed dismay at what Planned Parenthood was doing (in advocating
abortion), and our share owners and customers expres- sed displeasure
with the funding we were providing."
Faye Wattleton, president of Planned Parenthood, referred to the
AT&T decision as "corporate cowardice" and to the Christian Action
Council, specifically, as a "fringe group" that has "allowed fanatics
to dictate corporate policy" (New York Times, April 5, 1990). Full-page
ads purchased by Planned Parenthood and appearing in the New York Times
and Los Angeles Times claimed that AT&T "caved in to a close-minded
minority."
Although AT&T has pledged to stand firm, Planned Parenthood will no
doubt continue its strident attacks. Let AT&T know you stand with them
by graciously thanking them for withdrawing their support from Planned
Parenthood. Urge them to maintain their commitment. Address your letter
to:
Mr. Robert Allen
AT&T Chairman and CEO
550 Madison Ave.
New York, NY 10022-3297
Many other corporations, however, continue to support Planned
Parenthood.
Pro-life advocates are encouraged to write to these corporate
leaders and inform them of their displeasure. They are also encouraged
to learn which products and services are offered by these corporations
and to keep this in mind when making pur- chases. Pro-life advocates
should consider the implications of supporting corporations that use
their profits to support Planned Parenthood.
Corporate leaders need to understand that Planned Parenthood is a
controversial organization and that it is simply bad business to donate
to them. Planned Parenthood's programs are anti-child, anti-family, and
they disrupt the parent-child relationship. Planned Parenthood's
advocacy of abortion is of serious concern, even if corporate dollars
are not used for abortion itself. (See Inside Planned Parenthood, by
Douglas R. Scott.)
The following is a list of corporations that donate to Planned
Parenthood. Corporations that have contributed to Planned Parenthood
during the past five years are listed only if their management refuses
to say the corporation has no plans to support Planned Parenthood in
the future. Most corporations make such donations through their
foundations.
Important Notes: Keep in mind that some corporations have claimed
they no longer support Planned Parenthood. They remain on the list
because their management will not say they will not donate to Planned
Parenthood in the future. The statement is required to prevent
corporations from contributing five times as much money at five-year
intervals and then saying, for four years, they are not supporting
Planned Parenthood.
If you have questions as to why a particular corporation is listed,
please contact the Christian Action Council. It is not possible to
honor requests for "proof" that each company listed herein has donated
to Planned Parenthood. Such proof involves countless documents
(including IRS 990 forms), research and telephone calls. Be assured
that all corporations listed herein are confirmed donors (this list was
updated March 16, 1990). Those corporations not confirmed are not
listed.
Updated information is printed in the Christian Action Council
newsletter, Action Line, as events warrant. For a subscription, write
the Christian Action Council at 101 West Broad St., Suite 500, Falls
Church, VA 22046. A donation of $15 per year is requested.
