  3.    The following commentary was taken from the Christian Net echo (an
  4. international Fidonet bulletin board echo)

  8.    Greetings Kevin.  I wanted to contribute a response to your inquiry
  9. concerning the growth of Islam in Britain.
  10.  
  11.    I am an American, currently resident in the UK, with professional
  12. research experience in matters involving the Middle East. Statistics
  13. clearly infer that over the past 20 years Islam has been the fastest
  14. growing religion in Britain.
  15.  
  16.    The largest mosque in Western Europe is situated in London's Regent
  17. Park, and there is an Islamic university alongside.  In 1945 there was
  18. one mosque in England, in 1950 there were 25, in 1960 there were 80, in
  19. 1976 there were 200, etc.  Muslims here in Oxford were finally given
  20. permission to establish a mosque a few years ago, and it is located
  21. near where I live.

  23.    Within the past couple of years in one part of Birmingham one has
  24. been able to hear above the urban din the electrically amplified calls
  25. to prayer of a Muslim muezzin, just like in cities in N. Africa and the
  26. Middle East.
  27.  
  28.    In one sense these facts are terribly disconcerting.  When one
  29. passes through the English countryside it is the spires of the parish
  30. churches which are most prominent above all the villages, yet in recent
  31. years the abandonment of church buildings because of disuse has been a
  32. topic of much concern.  One thinks of England, and one thinks of a
  33. *Christian* nation.  The imprint of Christianity is everywhere.  Last
  34. Saturday I attended a memorial service in the University Church for a
  35. don who died last summer, and the particular congregation was
  36. predominantly agnostic or atheistic, but the service itself was
  37. Christian through and through...a tradition.
  38.  
  39.    England is an Islamic target.  During an international Islamic
  40. conference in Longon in the late 1970s the keynote speaker said, 'If we
  41. can win London for Islam, it won't be hard to win the  whole Western
  42. world.' But all this evidence is only part of the picture.  Muslims are
  43. not noticed proselytising here...but, then, Muslims do not generally
  44. proselytise the way evangelical Christians do.  *Jihad* means
  45. 'struggle' rather more than 'war', and *influence* can be part of it.
  46.  
  47.    If Muslims are able to induce ecumenical attitudes in Western
  48. Christians, it can prove advantageous for them.  You may be sure you
  49. will not encounter any reciprocal fair-mindedness in Saudi Arabia, much
  50. less in Iran.  The influence of the oil and markets of Muslim countries
  51. has been awesome.  This has however shifted with developments in
  52. international affairs. Oil lost its sway. Terrorism went too far. 
  53. Britain and the rest of the West shifted their perspectives
  54. considerably.  It must also be said that the growth of Islam in Britain
  55. has mainly been due to large numbers of Muslims moving here, rather
  56. than through many  converts...though there have been, unhappily,
  57. conversions (Cat Stevens, the singer and composer, is a devout Muslim
  58. now).

  60.    Finally, if you are in Washington, DC, you should take note of the
  61. 160 ft.  high minaret above the mosque of the Islamic Center on
  62. Massachusetts Ave.  And consider also the alarming growth of the Black
  63. Muslims in our country, the USA, and their links to the most radical
  64. Islamic nations.
  65.  
  66.    Read the Koran.  'Allah' is demonic, and has NOTHING to do with God.
  67.    But Muslims in our midst are not to be feared or hated. We must
  68. prayerfully, confidently, show them the Love of Christ, and speak the
  69. Truth to them without compromise.

  75.    Greetings, David.  I appreciated your words of encouragement and
  76. faith.

  78.    Islam is a formidable seducing spirit and a murderous one in the 
  79. world today...and no evidence is lacking in support of these
  80. conclusions.  I empathize with some of the testimonials of others which
  81. preceded my words about the threat of Islam to the UK; I would agree
  82. with them that encounters with unbelievers (i.e. people who have no
  83. faith in any religion) often seem more common and problematic than
  84. confrontations with Muslim proselytising, etc.  But whatever Muslims
  85. may seem to have in common with us is attributable to the fact that
  86. Muhammed selectively borrowed his values from Judeo-Christian
  87. revelation.

  89.    This infers what it is that makes Islam one of history's most evil
  90. systems: most of the other so-called 'great religions' are not known to
  91. have originated amongst peoples who 'exchanged the truth of God for a
  92. lie'; there's no evidence that Buddha or Confucius, for instance, ever
  93. knew the truth of God; primitive tribes around the planet have
  94. variously created and developed all manner of unusual and imaginative
  95. religious systems; but Muhammed KNEW Christians and Jews, he was also
  96. exposed to the Old and New Testaments, and the religion satan spawned
  97. through him was, in other words, a Judeo-Christian heresy from its
  98. inception.

  100.    The spiritual bondage of Islam is tremendously sinister and strong. 
  101. Islam is no less devoted to world conquest than Communism.  And Islam
  102. is very, very cruel. As the historian Toynbee once put it, while
  103. believers in Jesus and Buddha have sometimes waged murderous, unjust
  104. wars in the names of their religions, when they did it they were not
  105. following the examples of the founders of their respective faiths; but,
  106. he said, when  Muslims do it they follow the example of Muhammed
  107. himself...he wiped out whole communities of peoples who resisted him,
  108. allowing debased sensuality, pillage and slave-taking as enticements to
  109. his followers.

  111.    All unbelievers are equally dead in their sins while they remain
  112. unbelievers, but Islam BEGAN as a heresy.  Muslims are consistently the
  113. most difficult of peoples to convert to Christ, and this explains why.

  150.    The ritual prohibitions together with the 5 pillars and as many good
  151. deeds as is possible do not guarentee that paradise will be attained.

  153.    The Koran has no assurance of a 'heaven'.  It relies on man's doing
  154. and all the failures associated with it.

  156.    How like the nominal christian who believes in a creed(1), gives to
  157. charity(2), goes to church, birth, marriage and death , with the odd
  158. christmas and easter thrown in(4), and prayer, well yes if pushed or
  159. maybe every now and then at bedtime(5).

  161.    Jesus says "I AM THE WAY" "I GO TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU"

  163.    "TODAY YOU SHALL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE"

  165.    "NO MAN COMETH UNTO THE FATHER BUT BY ME"

  167.    Christianity does not rely on MAN, God sent HIS SON an atoining
  168. sacrifice for our sins (1 John 4:10)

  170.    The GULF has been crossed by Jesus himself at Calvary and we can
  171. have eternal life here and now, recieve it and be sure of it, no one
  172. can take it away Jesus promise "none shall pluck them from my hand"
  173.  
  174.    The KEYS may look the same but only JESUS fits, only JESUS is the
  175. sinless, spotless SON OF GOD.  THE GOD-MAN, God incarnate in human
  176. flesh, JESUS is the only way.

  184.    "It is commonplace today to speak of the battle of the eighties to
  185. be between Islam, Marxism and Third World Christianity.

  187.    Western Christianity is on the whole too flabby to do anything about
  188. it.  One of the clearest symptoms of this is the sad decline in true
  189. spirituality amongst the majority of Western Christians.

  191.    We have neglected our prayer life; we have stopped listening to God;
  192. we have been caught by the covetous spirit of our affluent society, and
  193. worshipped the false god of materialism.  We have exchanged our
  194. knowledge of *Theos* (God) for heady disputes about theological words,
  195. or for religious or social activism.  We have forgotten how to be still
  196. before God, how to meditate, trapped as we are in the vortex of modern
  197. life.  We have lost our sense of direction; and, confused and
  198. bewildered, we know little of the exhuberant joy of celebration enjoyed
  199. by God's people down the centuries, even in tough and depressing
  200. situations.

  202.    There is little to attract the unbeliever in the traditional,
  203. organized Church.  The tragedy is that most people outside the Church
  204. today are hungry and thirsty for God or for some form of spiritual
  205. reality, but the Church as an institution has little to offer in terms
  206. of living bread or the wine of the Spirit.
  207.  
  208.    It is hardly surprising, therefore, that a growing number are
  209. turning to the cults, to eastern mysticism, or to occult practices in
  210. pursuit of a basic spirituality that the Western Church no longer seems
  211. to provoke.

  218.    Dear Anton - Just a note here: Muslims most emphatically do not
  219. believe the same things as Christians, though they share some of the
  220. same moral values...along with many other religions.
  221.  
  222.    And even more emphatically, the Koran does NOT contain ANY of the
  223. same books as the Bible.
  224.  
  225.    Some of the historical figures from Scripture are mentioned in the
  226. Koran, but their characters and significances are radically altered,
  227. particularly the Person of Jesus Christ.
  228.  
  229.    Islam is an anti-Christ system, plainly and simply.  Jesus is the
  230. Son of God.  Islam explicitly denies the fact, and many others which
  231. are absolutely essential.  The question here is not what you or I or
  232. anyone think about Jesus or about Muhammed or about anything.  It has
  233. to do with what God has revealed. There is no way that one can be a
  234. Christian and admit the relative merit of a seductive, satanic
  235. deception... which is precisely what Islam is. If there are any doubts,
  236. read the Koran.

  238.    I too know many Muslims personally, from a wide variety of
  239. backgrounds. Many are warm, hospital folks on personal terms.
  240.  
  241.    But don't be deceived by that which has deceived generations of
  242. their people.  Stand firm under the Banner of Christ. Jesus died on the
  243. Cross for YOU!  Muhammed didn't.
  244.  
  245.    The simplest way to deal with this, for anyone who feels confused,
  246. is to personally submit the matter to God, the God of the Bible, in
  247. prayer.  He is Lord!  He will clarify these points very satisfactorily,
  248. and in a personal, loving, and utterly convincing way, I assure you.

  255.    Some quotes from the KORAN concerning Jesus and Christianity:

  257.    "Those who say: 'The Lord of Mercy has begotten a son, ' preach a
  258. monstrous falsehood, at which the very heavens might crack, the earth
  259. break asunder, and the mountains crumble to dust.  That they should
  260. ascribe a son to the Merciful, when it does not become Him  to beget
  261. one!" 19:88.

  263.     "...of Jesus, who said to the Israelites: 'I am sent forth to you
  264. by Allah to confirm the Torah already revealed and to give news of an
  265. apostle that will come after me whose name is Ahmed'" 61:6 (Note:
  266. "Ahmed" is another name of Muhammed's, meaning "The Praised One").

  268.    "The Jews say Ezra is the son of Allah, while the Christians say the
  269. Messiah is the son of Allah.  Such are their assertions, by which they
  270. imitate the infidels of old.  Allah confound them!  How perverse they
  271. are!  They worship their rabbis and their monks, and the Messiah the
  272. son of Mary, as gods besides Allah; though they were ordered to serve
  273. one God only.  There is no god but Him" 9:30 (Note: The charge that
  274. Jews say Ezra is the son of Allah has no known basis in Jewish
  275. religious tradition).

  277.    "To Moses We gave the Scriptures and after him We sent other
  278. apostles.  We gave Jesus the son of Mary veritable signs and
  279. strengthened him with the Holy Spirit.  Will you then scorn each
  280. apostle whose message does not suit your fancies, charging some with
  281. imposture and slaying others?  They say: 'Our hearts are sealed.' But
  282. Allah has cursed them for their unbelief.  They have but little faith. 
  283. And now that a Book confirming their own has come to them from Allah,
  284. they deny it, although they know it to be the truth and have long
  285. prayed for help against the  unbelievers. May Allah's curse be upon the
  286. infidels!" 2:86.

  288.    "With those who said they were Christians We made a covenant also,
  289. but they too have forgotten much of what they were  enjoined...People
  290. of the Book!  Our apostle has come to reveal to you much of what you
  291. have hidden of the Scriptures, and to forgive you much.  A light has
  292. come to you from Allah and a  glorious Book...Unbelivers are those who
  293. declare: 'Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary'" 5:14-17

  295.    "Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends. They
  296. are friends with one another.  Whoever of you seeks their friendship
  297. shall become one of their number.  Allah does not guide the wrongdoers"
  298. 5:51.

  301. Mary.' For the Messiah himself said: 'Children of Israel, serve  Allah,
  302. my Lord and your Lord.' He that worships other gods besides Allah shall

  304. shall help the evildoers. Unbelievers are those that say: 'Allah is one
  305. of three.' There is but one God.  If they do not desist from so saying,
  306. those of them that disbelieve shall be sternly punished.  Will they not
  307. turn to Allah in repentance and seek forgiveness of Him?  He is
  308. forgiving and merciful.  The Messiah, the son of Mary, was no more than
  309. an apostle..." 5:72-75.
