  3.    About the New World's translation :

  5.    "...the Word was a god."

  7.    Dr. J. R. Mantey (who is quoted on pages 1158-1159) of the Witnesses
  8. own Kingdom interlinear Translation): "A shocking mistranslation."
  9. "Obsolete and incorrect." "It is neither scholarly nor reasonable to
  10. translate John 1:1 'The Word was a god.'"

  12.    Dr. Bruce M. Metzger of Princeton (Professor of New Testament
  13. Language and Literature): "A frightful mistranslation." "Erroneous" and
  14. "pernicious" "reprehensible" "If the Jehovah's Witnesses take this
  15. translation seriously, they are polytheists."

  17.    Dr. Samuel J. Mikolaski of Zurich, Switzerland: "This anarthrous
  18. (used without the article) construction does not mean what the
  19. indefinite article 'a' means in English. It is monstrous to translate
  20. the phrase 'the Word was a god.'"

  22.    Dr. Paul L. Kaufman of Portland, Oregon: "The Jehovah's Witnesses
  23. people evidence an abysmal ignorance of the basic tenets of Greek
  24. grammar in their mistranslation of John 1:1."

  26.    Dr. Charles L. Feinberg of La Mirada, California: "I can assure you
  27. that the rendering which the Jehovah's Witnesses give John 1:1 is not
  28. held by any reputable Greek scholar."

  30.    Dr. James L. Boyer of Winona Lake, Indiana: "I have never heard of,
  31. or read of any Greek Scholar who would have agreed to the
  32. interpretation of this verse insisted upon by the Jehovah's
  33. Witnesses...I have never encountered one of them who had any knowledge
  34. of the Greek language."

  36.    Dr. Walter R. Martin (who does not teach Greek but has studied the
  37. language): "The translation...'a god' instead of 'God' is erroneous and
  38. unsupported by any good Greek scholarship, ancient or contemporary and
  39. is a translation rejected by all recognized scholars of the Greek
  40. language may of whom are not even Christians, and cannot fairly be said
  41. to be biased in favor of the orthodox contention."

  43.    Dr. William Barclay of the University of Glasgow, Scotland: "The
  44. deliberate distortion of truth by this sect is seen in their New
  45. testament translations. John 1:1 is translated: '...the Word was a god,
  46. ' a translation which is grammatically impossible...It is abundantly
  47. clear that a sect which can translate the New Testament like that is
  48. intellectually dishonest."

  50.    Dr. F. F. Bruce of the University of Manchester, England: "Much is
  51. made by Arian amateur grammarians of the omission of the definite
  52. article with 'God' in the phrase 'And the Word was God.' Such an
  53. omission is common with nouns in a predicative construction...'a god'
  54. would be totally indefensible." [Barclay and Bruce are generally
  55. regarded as Great Britain's leading Greek scholars. Both have New
  56. Testament translations in print!]

  58.    Dr. Ernest C. Colwell of the University of Chicago: "A definite
  59. predicate nominative has the article when it follows the verb; it does
  60. not have the article when it precedes the verb...this statement cannot
  61. be regarded as strange in the prologue of the gospel which reaches its
  62. climax in the confession of Thomas. 'My Lord and my God.' - John 20:28"

  64.    Dr. Phillip B. Harner of Heidelberg College: "The verb preceding an
  65. anarthrous predicate, would probably mean that the LOGOS was 'a god' or
  66. a divine being of some kind, belonging to the general category of THEOS
  67. but as a distinct being from HO THEOS. In the form that John actually
  68. uses, the word "THEOS" is places at the beginning for emphasis."

  70.    Dr. J. Johnson of California State University, Long Beach: "No
  71. justification whatsoever for translating THEOS EN HO LOGOS as 'the Word
  72. was a god.' There is no syntactical parallel to Acts 28:6 where there
  73. is a statement in indirect discourse; John 1:1 is direct....I am
  74. neither a Christian nor a Trinitarian."

  76.    Dr. Eugene A. Nida, head of Translations Department, American Bible
  77. Society: "With regard to John 1:1, there is of course a complication
  78. simply because the New World Translation was apparently done by persons
  79. who did not take seriously the syntax of the Greek." [Responsible for
  80. the Good News Bible - The committee worked under him.]

  82.    Dr. B. F. Wescott (whose Greek text - not the English part - is used
  83. in the Kingdom Interlinear Translation): "The predicate (God) stands
  84. emphatically first, as in IV.24. It is necessarily without the
  85. article...No idea of inferiority of nature is suggested by the form of
  86. expression, which simply affirms the true deity of the Word...in the
  87. third clause 'the Word' is declared to be 'God' ans so included in the
  88. unity of the Godhead."

  90.    Dr. J. J. Griesbach (whose Greek text - not the English part - is
  91. used in the Emphatic Diaglott): "So numerous and clear are the
  92. arguments and testimonies of Scriptures in favor of the true Deity of
  93. Christ, that I can hardly imagine how, upon the admission of the Divine
  94. authority of Scripture, and with regard to fair rules of
  95. interpretation, this doctrine can by any man be called in doubt.
  96. Especially the passage, John 1:1-3, is so clear and so superior to all
  97. exception, that by no daring efforts of either commentators or critics
  98. can it be snatched out of the hands of the defenders of the truth."

  100.    Mr. Jehovah's Witness: Are we to simply ignore these eminent Greek
  101. scholars, and stubbornly cling to the Man-made teachings of the
  102. Watchtower, none of whom had any education to speak of in Greek
  103. Grammar?!
