  3.    The U.S. Hubble Space Telescope is scheduled for launch aboard the
  4. space shuttle Discovery sometime this year.
  5.  
  6.    Once out in orbit, 368 miles above the earth and far from the
  7. distorting effects of the atmosphere, Hubble's 94.5 inch mirror will
  8. make images ten times sharper than any earth-based telescope.
  9.  
  10.    "For astronomers, it will be like the receipt of the Bible," says
  11. John Bachall of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
  12.  
  13.    Hubble will focus on stars twenty times fainter than any seen with
  14. existing telescopes.

  16.    Hubble will also examine areas that appear vacant from earth to see
  17. if they are populated with faint stars. It will also search for planets
  18. outside our solar system.
