  10. ABSTRACT--A multiple hypothesis approach is used to 
  11. consider  the origin of the Darwin finches  of  the 
  12. Galapagos  islands.   Three  simple hypotheses  are 
  13. distinguished  by  the  location  of  the   barrier 
  14. thought to be responsible for genetic divergence of 
  15. populations   in   allopatry:    (a)   within   the 
  16. archipelago,  (b)  between the archipelago and  the 
  17. source  area,  and (c) within the source area.   An 
  18. allopatric  divergence index is described  to  help 
  19. identify  the  degree of isolation needed for  full 
  20. speciation.   While each hypothesis has some merit, 
  21. it  is  argued that they  are  probably  inadequate 
  22. because  each  represents too simple a view of  the 
  23. causes of a complex phenomenon.  The most important 
  24. barrier in the speciation of the Darwin finches has 
  25. probably been the ocean between the archipelago and 
  26. the mainland.
