  10. Protoavis,  the oldest known bird from the Triassic 
  11. of Texas is united with the ornithurine birds by 30 
  12. postulated cranial synapomorphies which are grouped 
  13. as follows: 1) loss of diapsid arch and postorbital 
  14. bar   resulting   in   confluence   of   supra- and 
  15. infratemporal fenestrae and orbit;  2) formation of 
  16. postorbital  and zygomatic processes;  3)  external 
  17. naris   bounded  by  premaxilla   and   nasal;   4) 
  18. streptostylic quadrate with developments of orbital 
  19. process,  condylar articulation with pterygoid, and 
  20. lateral  cotylus  for  quadratojugal;  5)  loss  of 
  21. postorbital  and ectopterygoid,  formation of jugal 
  22. bar  and  prokinesis;  6)  highly  enlarged  brain, 
  23. cerebrum contacts cerebellum  dorsally,  displacing 
  24. optic  lobes  ventrally;  7) presence of  all  five 
  25. tympanic   diverticula   with  the   formation   of 
  26. squamosal  roof over the superior tympanic  recess; 
  27. both    ATR   and   STR   developed   contralateral 
  28. communications;  8) bony eustachian tubes;  9) bony 
  29. mandibular  symphysis;  mandibular  elements  fused 
  30. posteriorly and compressed laterally,  obliterating 
  31. Meckelian  canal;  10)  horizontal  braincase  with 
  32. well-developed metotic process and cochlear recess.

  34. Most of these ornithurine apomorphies are absent or 
  35. unknown  in  Archaeopteryx,   indicating  a   basal 
  36. dichotomy   in   the  early  lineages   of   birds.  
  37. Archaeopteryx  seems to be on a separate line  from 
  38. modern  birds.   Protoavis  is the ancestor of  the 
  39. Ornithurae to which all modern birds belong.

  41. The  architectures  of the brain and inner  ear  of 
  42. Protoavis  indicate  neurosensory   specializations 
  43. associated with flight.
