  1. BIO:John Wilbur Chapman

  4. Presbyterian evangelist. John W. Chapman was born in Indiana 
  5. and educated at Oberlin College and Lane Seminary. He re-
  6. ceived the LL.D. from Heidelberg University. He held pastor-
  7. ates in Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. He con-
  8. ducted evangelistic campaigns in Canada, Hawaii, the Fiji Is-
  9. lands, Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Japan, Tas-
  10. mania, and the Philippine Islands.
  11.         Chapman became the director of the Winona Lake Bible 
  12. Conference and helped set up conferences at Stonybrooke, Long 
  13. Island, and Montreat, North Carolina. He was made executive 
  14. secretary of the Presbyterian General Assembly in 1903. He 
  15. won thousands of souls to Jesus Christ and influenced hun-
  16. dreds of young men to enter the ministry. He was "cultured, 
  17. earnest, enthusiastic, and sane." In his preaching and manner 
  18. of life, he was never coarse or thoughtless. His preaching 
  19. was calm, but forceful; emotional, but not dramatic.
