-
- About the Program
-
- The author wrote the program for the car owner who knows
- little about car maintenance and troubleshooting. In writing the
- program , the author used the Clipper programming language and
- compiler and a 386 compatible computer. The information contained
- in the program was from many texts about car maintenance and
- troubleshooting. If you don't need the information, then the
- record-keeping feature of the program may be of use to you.
-
-
- Hardware Requirements
-
- In order to run smoothly this program needs a hard disk, at
- least 256K memory , a color monitor and a graphics card. The
- recommends a printer (although optional) for making hardcopies of
- the tutorial texts.
-
-
- Getting Started.
-
- Creating the Operating system configuration file.
-
- If you haven't created a configuration file named CONFIG.SYS,
- then this is the way to do it.
-
- Just type in the following from the prompt. Be sure that you
- are typing this into the boot directory of your hard disk.
-
- COPY CON:CONFIG.SYS
- FILES=20
- BUFFERS=20
-
- Then just press Ctrl-Z or F6 and press Return to save the
- config.sys file you've created.
-
- To check if you indeed placed a config.sys just type in the
- following :
-
- TYPE CONFIG.SYS
-
- Then the computer would show you its contents, this :
-
- FILES=20
- BUFFERS=20
-
- It is important that the boot disk contain this file
- (CONFIG.SYS). You must also use this disk as a boot disk before
- running the program.
-
- Making a Subdirectory.
-
- This program has a lot of data files and each containing a
- lot of information therefore the whole package takes up a lot of
- disk space. We recommend that you install this package into a
- hard disk. To do this, just follow the directions :
-
- 1. Create a subdirectory named \MIRTS
- C:
- MD MIRTS
-
-
- 2. After creating the subdirectory, copy the file CARMAT.EXE into
- this directory.
-
- COPY CARMAT.EXE C:\MIRTS
-
- 3. Then just type CARMAT from the \MIRTS directory and the
- program will automatically decompress and write the remaining
- files needed to run. ( This is a self-extracting file made with
- LHARC, a file compression program).
-
- Files Included in the Package :
-
- CARMAT.EXE - The self-extracting compressed file containing the
- executable files as well as the datafiles.
-
- CARMAT.DOC - This file. Includes a needed information on how to
- get started and use the program.
-
- MIRTS.EXE - The executable file. Type MIRTS to run the
- program.
-
- The following are the Index files (.NTX) needed by this program
-
- JNAME1.NTX
- JNAME2.NTX
- JDATE.NTX
- JDUE.NTX
- JDAYS.NTX
- CRMTMNDX.NTX
- CRMTTNDX.NTX
-
- The following are the database files (.DBF) and Memo files (.DBT)
- needed to run the program.
-
- CRMTJOB.DBF
- CRMTFIL.DBF
- CRMTMNDX.DBF
- CRMTTNDX.DBF
- CRMTTEXT.DBF
- MIRTHELP.DBF
- QFILE.DBF
- SYSTEM.DBF
- CRMTJOB.DBT
- CRMTTEXT.DBT
-
- MIRTHELP.MEM - This is the help file , this contains the help text
- used when you press F1 from any menu.
-
-
-
-
- A short run through the program
-
- This short run through of the program will familiarize you
- with the features and the menus of the program. Follow these steps
- and don't be afraid to experiment. This run through will take
- about 20-30 minutes.
-
- 1. Type in MIRTS from the prompt
-
- 2. The introduction will come out . Press any key to continue
-
- 3. Mirts Carmat will show the date today. Check today's date and
- enter the correct date. If the date written is correct, just
- press return.
-
- 4. Mirts Carmat will ask you if you want to display pending jobs.
- Since you have not made any job records yet, just press 'n' for
- no.
-
- 5. This is the Main Menu of the Mirts Car Maintenance and
- Troubleshooting system. You have 5 choices namely :
-
- Troubleshooting
- Maintenance
- Backup
- Shell to dos
- Exit
-
-
- 6. Position the lightbar to Troubleshooting then press Enter
-
- 7. You are now in the Troubleshooting module. You can see the
- Systems Menu which contains the following choices
-
- FUEL
- BRAKES
- CLUTCH
- ENGINE
- COOLING
- ELECTRICAL
- TRANSMISSION
- STEERING / SUSPENSION # 1
- STEERING / SUSPENSION # 2
- UNKNOWN SYSTEM TROUBLE
-
- 8. Now let's try the 'UNKNOWN SYSTEM TROUBLE' module. Position
- lightbar over that and press Return.
-
- 9. The Unknown system module asks you questions answerable with
- either a Yes or a No. To choose the answer, just position the
- light bar until the choice box is red then press Return to accept
- choice.
-
- 10. For testing purposes, answer No to every question.
-
- 11. At the end of 3 responses, the program will show a 'Report
- Card' showing its findings as to what system to look into.
-
- 12. Press any key to return to the Troubleshooting Systems Menu.
-
- 13. Choose one of the systems written in the 'Report Card' from
- the Unknown System Module. This will put you in the Problems
- Menu.
-
- 14. The Problems Menu is the list of problems associated with the
- System chosen. Choose one and you will see the Probable Cause
- Menu
-
- 15. The Probable Cause Menu is a list of , well, probable causes
- of the problem chosen. Choose any cause you like. This will put
- you in the Text Reading Module.
-
- 16. The text reading module, gets the information about the
- System, Problem and probable cause and searches the database to
- come up with the appropriated text to inform and instruct you as
- to how to take care of the problem given the cause.
-
- 17. If you have problems about navigating the screen press F1 or
- help. When done reading, you could press Esc.
-
- 18. The program will ask you if you would like to print out the
- text ( Useful when your computer is not in your garage or vice-
- versa ). Press 'N' for no , we don't need that at the moment.
-
- 19. After responding to the printing question, Mirts Carmat will
- bring you back to the Probable Cause Menu. To leave a specific
- menu, just press Esc to go a level back. Go back to the Carmat
- Main Menu by pressing Esc until you get there.
-
- 20. Take a break ! You have successfully navigated through the
- Troubleshooting part of the program. At this moment you have not
- yet done any inputting to the program although I hope the program
- did some inputting to you.
-
- 21. Let's go to the Maintenance Menu, position the lightbar over
- the choice and press Enter.
-
- 22. You are now on the Maintenance Module, Mirts Carmat will show
- you the information on the firt Record. This record is a dummy
- record I made as an example. The screen contains the contents of
- the first record and the key to press and their functions.
-
- 23. The first thing that you could do is to 'page' through the
- records, I made two sample records. Press PgDn to move forward or
- PgUp to move backward. Don't worry if you go over the number of
- records present, the program won't let you.
-
- 24. The first thing you have to do is to add records. Now to do
- this press F4 (Add Records). Immediately after pressing the key,
- observe the Record number , this means that you are adding a
- record and that, if saved, the record will have that number.
-
- 25. You would also observe that the cursor key is now at the
- beginning of the response for the 'Name of Job ' question. To
- leave this blank just press return and the cursor would go to the
- next question. Let us enter a job name. Enter 'Change Oil' as the
- jobname. Don't worry about capitalization, the program will
- automatically capitalize all the letters in that response.
-
- 26. Now you are on the 'Date Job was done' question. The answer
- is automatically the date today, but you can change it by
- inputting some past date. Notice that the program cannot accept a
- date in the future. Want to know Why ? Read the question .
-
- 27. After entering the Date, Mirts Carmat asks you about the
- duration between jobs. The program can only accept duration by
- the month, usually you need to change the oil every 6 months so
- enter 6 then press Return. Notice that the 'Next job is due on'
- and 'Days before next job' will have new data. The computer
- calculates the months from the date you did the maintenance job
- and the duration before the next job and comes up with the next
- 'Due Date'. Also, if the Date the job was done is not equal to
- the current date, the computer calculates the days before the Due
- date from the current date. From today you have X days left
- before the due date.
-
- 28. Now you are on the Additional notes Box. You can put anything
- here. The brand of the oil you used, the grade, the mechanic who
- did it, etc. You could even enter your experiences as an added
- note. To exit and save the contents of this box just press Ctrl-
- W, otherwise to exit and abort the contents press Esc.
-
- 29. Mirts Carmat will ask you if you would like to save the
- record. For our purposes, enter 'Y' for yes. If you chose 'N' then
- Mirts Carmat will not save all the information entered here.
-
- 30. After accepting the record, you found out that you inputted
- the wrong duration. It should be 5 months instead of 6. To do
- this just go to the record by pressing either PgDn or PgUp. Then
- press the F3 key (Edit Record).
-
- 31. If you don't want to change the contents of a specific
- response, just press return and the cursor would go to the next
- response. Now go to the Duration response and enter 5, the 'Due
- date' and the 'Days Left' will also change accordingly.
-
- 32. When you reach the Additional notes box , just press Esc to
- leave without updating its contents. Mirts Carmat will ask you if
- you want to save the record . You've decided that the original
- duration of 6 months is correct so just press 'N' and the original
- data will be shown again.
-
- 33. Now you've decided that the record is not needed anymore and
- you want to delete it. Then press the F5 key (Delete Record).
- Mirts Carmat will ask you again to confirm your motives. Press 'Y'
- to continue deleting.
-
- 34. Now it's your turn. Enter as much records as you want. It
- would be advisable to create a history of a single job name say
- you have a history of changing the oil for 3 years already so it
- should have 6 records. Note that you should enter the text
- 'Change Oil' uniformly among the six entries. This will avoid
- errors because the computer will only recognize records with
- exactly the same job name.
-
- 35. After writing the last record on your list. Try the PgUp and
- the PgDn keys to go through the records. Try Ctrl-PgUp or Ctrl-
- PgDn to go to the First and Last records. A feature included here
- is the F2 key (Record Skip key). You can skip records either
- going forwards or backwards by as much records as you want. Say
- for example you are on record number 1 and you would like to go to
- record number # 10. Just press F2, press 'F' for forward jumping
- and enter 9 ( the number of jumps from 1 to 10 ) and the contents
- of record number 10 are on the display.
-
- 36. Now it's time to try the F6 key (Reports Menu). This key
- brings up a menu giving you a choice on which type of report you
- want to see, by Job Name - the latest records of Job Names, Job
- Date - From the latest back, Due Date - From the latest back ,
- Days Left from least days left to the most days left and the
- history of a Job Name.
-
- 37. Experiment on the different reports and see which report fits
- you and your informational needs. We will discuss the history
- module later. Just choose 'S' for output to screen so as not to
- waste printer ink, paper and power.
-
- 38. In the Reports Menu, there is a choice there named 'History'.
- This report tells about the history of a specified Job Name. If
- you forgot the job name , just enter a part of that job name like
- 'oil' in 'change oil' and the program will search for all the job
- names with the word 'oil' in them. After making six records on
- the 'Change Oil' job name, choose the History report and press
- Return.
-
- 39. The program will prompt you for a Job name, just write there
- 'oil'. The program will search for Job names containing 'oil' and
- show you the choices. You then choose your target job name and the
- computer will show you a report about the history of that job.
- The arrangement is from the latest going back.
-
- 40. Now you are through with the Maintenance Module, press Esc
- until you get to the Mirts Carmat Main Menu. Take a break and
- come back afterwards. We will just try out the Backup and the Dos
- shell features.
-
- 41. There comes a time in every persons life that disaster
- strikes. Power problems, accidental deletion, etc. So it makes
- sense to back up data files as often as possible. Mirts Carmat
- and Troubleshooting system provides for that backing up datafiles
- into a diskette for storage in case of emergencies. Position the
- lightbar to the Backup choice and press Return.
-
- 42. Mirts Carmat will ask you where to back up, either in A -
- drive A, B - drive B, or E - exit or abort procedure. For our
- purposes, just press A for drive A. If you did not put a diskette
- in drive A or you forgot to close the drive door , a message will
- appear reminding you of the problem. Correct this and try again.
-
- 43. Observe the graphic representation while backing up the
- files.
-
- 44. In case of accidental erasure of the files on your
- subdirectory, just follow the following instructions :
-
- If you accidentally delete all your files ( including the
- executable files ). Get your original diskette ( the one that has
- the self-extracting file called CARMAT.EXE ) and copy that file
- back to the subdirectory.
-
- COPY A:CARMAT.EXE C:\MIRTS
- C:
- CD MIRTS
- CARMAT
-
- This will extract again the executable as well as the base
- datafile ( the original data files ). Then get your database
- backup diskette made using the Backup module from the Main menu,
- and copy its contents to the MIRTS subdirectory. The commands are
- as follows :
-
- COPY A:*.* TO C:\MIRTS
-
- All the files are present and you are ready to use the program
- again.
-
- 45. The Shell to dos command lets you use dos commands from within
- the Carmat program. You can list the directory, copy , delete,
- rename files, etc. Free RAM is small, this is because Carmat uses
- a big chunk of memory (Sorry about that).
-
- 46. After going through this short tutorial, you have already
- familiarized yourself on the different menus and modules of the
- program. Feel free to experiment or retrace your steps to be
- sure.
