  9. The following notes have been designed to help get you going with
  10. Setup Factory 4.0.  Please take a minute to read them!

  13. What can Setup Factory 4.0 do for me?
  14. =====================================
  15. In a nutshell, Setup Factory 4.0 creates the setup program and disk
  16. set for the software product you want to distribute.
  17.  
  18. Setup Factory 4.0 is based on our point-and-click philosophy.  
  19. Version 4.0 just takes it to an extreme.  All you do is add files to 
  20. your project, customize the screens you want to display (or use the 
  21. professionally designed defaults), and click on the Build button.  
  22. Your files are automatically compressed, your setup program is created 
  23. and then everything is output to your disk set.  You don't have to worry 
  24. about large files not fitting on your disks, data integrity issues 
  25. or any other nuisances.  Setup Factory takes care of all the details 
  26. and lets you take care of your real work!

  28. Even though Setup Factory 4.0 is easy to use, we sure didn't sacrifice 
  29. any flexibility!  Install files to any location  -  Create shortcut 
  30. icons and groups  -  Single file setups  -  Selective install capability  
  31. -  Full featured uninstall  -  Build setups for both Windows 3.1 and 
  32. Windows 95/NT  -  Setup expiration dates, passwords and serial numbers  
  33. -  Collect information from the user  - CD-ROM and network installs  
  34. -  System configuration checking  -  Modify system files  -  Automatic 
  35. font registration  -  True multilingual support  -  Customizable screens 
  36. and messages  -  And of course, much more!

  39. Getting Started
  40. ===============
  41. You will quickly find out that Setup Factory is extremly easy to use.  
  42. You will most likely be able to create your first setup in only minutes!  
  43. To do this, simply choose to start the Project Wizard when you are 
  44. presented with the Welcome screen.

  46. Each screen or dialog in Setup Factory has a Help button which you can use 
  47. to get more information on the options available to you.  You can also
  48. refer to the Help menu for more detailed information and to browse the
  49. help file Contents and Index for quick answers to your questions.

  52. Restrictions on Use
  53. ===================
  54. The setups that you create with this evaluation version are for testing
  55. purposes only.  You may not distribute, in any way or form, the setups 
  56. that you create with this evaluation version.  This includes both 
  57. internal and external distribution.  When you are ready to really put  
  58. Setup Factory to work, you can order the full commercial version which
  59. comes with a royalty-free license to distribute the setups that you
  60. create.

  63. System Requirements
  64. ===================
  65. There are two distinct parts to Setup Factory 4.0.  The actual Setup
  66. Factory 4.0 program is a 32 bit program.  The setups that is creates can
  67. be targeted for either 16 bit or 32 bit, depending on the Setup Module
  68. that you use.  See the help file for more detailed information.

  70. Setup Factory 4.0 was designed for Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or greater.
  71. If you are running Windows 3.1, you will not be able to run 
  72. Setup Factory 4.0 unless you install the Win32s (version 1.3 or greater) 
  73. extensions.

  75. Win32s is an extension to Windows 3.1 that allows you to run Windows 95/NT
  76. software on your Windows 3.1 system.  You can obtain Win32s free of charge
  77. from the Microsoft web site in the development tools section
  78. (http://www.microsoft.com/kb/faq/devtools/winsdk/win32s/all.htm).

  81. Notes on Setup Modules
  82. ======================
  83. There are some obvious differences between the 16 bit and 32 bit Setup
  84. Modules.  You should use the module that matches the type of software
  85. you are distributing.  If you are distributing Windows 95/NT software,
  86. then use the 32 bit module.  If you are distributing Windows 3.1 software,
  87. then use the 16 bit module.

  89. The 32 bit module fully supports all of Setup Factory 4.0's features.
  90. The 32 bit setups work with Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51 or greater, 
  91. and Windows 3.1 with Win32s 1.3 or greater.

  93. The 16 bit module has the following limitations imposed on it by the
  94. operating system's capabilities:
  95. - No long filenames
  96. - Registry editing is limited to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
  97. - No setup animation on the progress dialog
  98. - Uninstall does not use the Registry key or Add/Remove description fields
  99. - Shortcut Editor only recognizes Folders without a "\" in the name
  100.   (i.e. Shortcuts can only be in Program Manager style groups)
  101. The 16 bit setups work with Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT.

  104. Notes on using Setup Factory 4.0 with Win32s
  105. ============================================
  106. The setups that you create with Setup Factory 4.0 will work perfectly
  107. on Win32s as long as you do not use long filenames in your project.
  108.  
  109. When running the actual Setup Factory program under Win32s, you should
  110. be aware of the following, mainly cosmetic, issues:
  111. - The scroll bar on the main screen does not properly reflect your
  112. position in the file list.  For example, it seems to stop in the middle
  113. of the screen rather than the bottom.  It is not really a problem though
  114. as the file list scrolls properly.
  115. - Make sure you are running in 16 or 256 colors.  If you run in a higher
  116. color depth you will find that certain graphic elements, such as the
  117. different icon views will not appear correctly.
