- How to configure your computer so that the CRT Link machine can connect to the Internet
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- The following describes how to configure a basic Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 machine
- with only a standard Windows 95 installation on it so that the CRT Link machine can
- connect to the Internet and update your files. If you have already done some of the
- following then you can miss out those steps.
-
-
- 1. Set up your modem according to the manufacturer's instructions.
-
- * You can test your modem using the Windows 95 'HyperTerminal' application.
- * This can be found by clicking the 'Start Menu' and choosing 'Programs',
- 'Accessories'.
- * Please ring your modem manufacturer or supplier for support if you cannot
- get your modem to work.
-
- If you find that 'HyperTerminal' is not installed you can install it by
- clicking on the 'Start Menu', choosing 'Settings', 'Control Panel' then running
- the 'Add/Remove Programs applet'. Then choose the 'Windows Setup' tab and
- double click on 'Communications', select 'HyperTerminal' then click OK.
-
-
- 2. Make sure you have the TCP/IP or TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter Protocol installed.
-
- * Click on the 'Start Menu', choose 'Settings', 'Control Panel' and double click
- on the 'Network' applet.
- * You should see 'TCP/IP' or 'TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter'.
- * If you can't see this click on the 'Add' button.
- * Click on 'Protocol', then clik the 'Add' button.
- * Click on the Manafacturer of your network. See your IT Support Manager if you
- do not know this.
- * Then choose the TCP/IP Network Protocol.
- * You should now see 'TCP/IP' or 'TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter' in your list of
- installed network components. Accept the prompt and reboot your computer.
- * If the TCP/IP protocol is not installed and you connect to your Service Provider
- you will find that you can apparently log on, then you will be told that your
- user name and password are being verified, then you will be disconnected from
- your Service Providers computer. Basically, you will be disconnected because
- after the initial logon your computer does not know how to talk to your Service
- Providers, they are in effect talking different languages.
-
-
- 3. Make sure you have 'Dial-Up Networking' support installed. This is not installed
- with the standard Windows 95 installation. If you are installing Windows 95 you
- have to choose 'Custom Installation' and select 'Dial Up Networking' support.
-
- If you find that 'Dial-Up Networking' is not installed you can install it by
- clicking on the 'Start Menu', choosing 'Settings', 'Control Panel' then running the
- 'Add/Remove Programs' applet. Then choose the 'Windows Setup' tab and double click
- on 'Communications', select 'Dial-Up Networking' then click OK.
-
- Please contact your IT support department, computer supplier or Microsoft for
- support if you have problems with this.
-
-
- 4. Set up a Dial-Up Networking connection to your Internet Service Provider.
-
- Please contact your Internet Service Provider for support if you have any problems
- setting up a 'Dial-Up Networking' connection, or if you are not sure about any of
- the details you may be required to type in. It's difficult to be too specific
- here as the methods for connecting to Service Providers differ.
-
- * Click on the 'Start Menu', choose 'Programs', 'Accessories' then 'Dial-Up
- Networking'.
- * Double click on 'Make a Connection'.
- * If this is the first time you've run 'Dial-Up Networking' the 'Make a Connection'
- program will run automatically when you choose Dial-Up Networking.
- * Type a name for the computer you are dialing. The text you type in here will
- appear under the icon that will be created for this connection once you have
- completed this process. Choose 'Next'.
- * Type in the phone number for the computer you want to call and choose the correct
- country code. Choose 'Next'.
- * Choose 'Finish'.
- * Right click on the connection you have just created and choose 'Properties'.
- Click on the 'Configure' button and choose the 'Options' tab.
- Choose 'Bring up terminal window after dialing'. The purpose of this is to
- allow you to type in your User Name, Password and perhaps the Protocol
- information that enables you to connect to your Service Providers computer.
- If you are using a Dial-Up Scripting tool that automates your log-on to your
- Service Providers computer then this step is not necessary.
- * Again, the following may or may not be necessary depending on your Service
- Providers setup, contact them if you are not sure.
- Choose the 'Server Type' button in your connections 'Properties' dialog.
- Choose the 'TCP/IP Settings' button in the dialog that appears.
- If required, Choose 'Specify an IP address' and type in the IP Address.
- If required, Choose 'Specify name server adresses' and type in the Primary
- and Secondary DNS server addresses.
- * You should now be able to connect to your Service Provider and if you have a
- browser on your machine you should be able to browse the Internet.
-
-
- 5. Install Internet Explorer 3.0 on your machine.
-
- Internet Explorer 3.0 release comes bundled with your EasyTutor Learn Internet
- 97 CD. There are two approaches that you can use to install this product.
-
- * Install from within the program.
- * Install via the Third Party Software installer provided on the CD. Run the
- following program: CD:\SOFTWARE\TPSETUP.EXE and click on the
- 'MS Internet Explorer 3' button. This will kick of the installation for the
- release version of MS Internet Explorer 3.0.
- * Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
- * If you experience any problems installing Internet Explorer 3.0 please contact
- Microsoft.
-
-
- 6. Configure the Internet Properties dialog so that you 'Connect to Internet as needed'
-
- There are two ways to get at the Internet Properties dialog. You must install
- Internet Explorer to get access to this dialog. You can right click on
- 'The Internet' shortcut on your desktop and select 'Properties', or, alternatively
- you can click on the 'Start Menu' button then choose 'Settings', 'Control Panel',
- then double click on the 'Internet' applet.
-
- * Run the Internet Properties dialog using one of the methods discussed above.
- * Select the 'Connection' tab.
- * Choose 'Connect to the Internet as needed'.
- * Select a Dial-Up Networking connection to use.
-
- This stage is important to the download process working, you can have your computer
- configured to use the Internet perfectly well (Points 1 - 5 above) and the program
- will still fail because you have not completed this step.
-
- Basically, You are telling the computer to kick of the 'Connect To' dialog box
- whenever a program requests it, and you are also telling it what Service Provider
- to connect to. Windows 95 does not do this by default at the moment.
-
- The 'Connect To' dialog is the dialog that you see when you double click
- on a connection you have made to a Server Provider in 'Dial-Up Networking'.
