  2.        How to Find, Install and Test Multimedia MCI Drivers
  3. ======================================================================
  4. MPEG NOTE:  Microsoft Corporation has announced new support for MPEG,
  5. which is to be coming soon.  Currently, the only MPEG drivers Photodex
  6. has been able to find are buggy and not recommended.  When Microsoft
  7. releases their MPEG drivers, Photodex will make them available if
  8. possible and provide installation instructions.

  12. WHERE TO GET MCI DRIVERS
  13. ========================
  14. You can download freeware/shareware MCI drivers from all major on-line
  15. sources.  For each of the on-line services, follow the instructions on
  16. how to download each type of MCI driver.

  18. COMPUSERVE (WINCIM)
  19.    ------------------------------
  20.    VIDEO FOR WINDOWS (.AVI files)

  22.      1) GO WINMM  (This is the MS Win Multimedia Forum.)
  23.      2) Select 'Browse' from the 'Library' menu.
  24.      3) Select the 'Video for Windows' library (Library 4.)
  25.      4) Find the file called 'VFW 1.1e Runtime' (VFW11E.ZIP)
  26.           and download.  (The file should be stored in the
  27.           C:\CSERVE\DOWNLOAD directory, unless you have the
  28.           WinCIM software installed elsewhere.)
  29.      5) Proceed to INSTALLING VIDEO FOR WINDOWS below.

  37.      2) Download the file QTINSTAL.EXE and follow the installation
  38.           instructions.  (The file should be stored in the path called
  39.           C:\CSERVE\DOWNLOAD directory, unless you have the WinCIM
  40.           software installed elsewhere.)

  88. HOW TO INSTALL MCI DRIVERS
  89. ==========================
  90. Follow the instructions below to install each type of MCI driver.

  93.    VIDEO FOR WINDOWS (.AVI files)
  94.    ------------------------------
  95.      1) Create a directory to hold the setup program for Video for Windows.
  96.      2) Copy VFW11E.ZIP to the directory you created.
  97.      3) In a DOS shell (or WinZIP), log to the directory you created and
  98.           use PKUNZIP to decompress the VFW11E.ZIP file.  To do this, use,
  99.           the following DOS command line:

  101.                PKUNZIP VFW11E.ZIP
  102.  
  103.      4) Exit the DOS shell (or WinZIP) and return to the Windows.
  104.      5) Use File Manager to execute the SETUP.EXE file in the directory you
  105.           created.
  106.      6) Follow the on-screen instructions to install Video for Windows.

  113.      1) Follow the instructions given by Apple in the QuickTime download

  119.      1) Use File Manager to create a new directory and copy the AAWIN11.EXE
  120.           file into this new directory.
  121.      2) Use File Manager to execute the AAWIN11.EXE program.  This will expand
  122.           the setup files.
  123.      3) Use File Manager to copy the MCIAAP.DRV file and all other DLL files
  124.           in the directory to your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  125.      4) Edit the SYSTEM.INI file in your \WINDOWS directory and add the
  126.           following line to the [mci] section (do NOT include the '-->'
  127.           arrow on the left, it's there to show you which line.):

  134.      5) Edit the CONTROL.INI file in your \WINDOWS directory and add the

  143.      6) Edit the WIN.INI file in your \WINDOWS directory and add the

  156. HOW TO TEST MCI DRIVERS
  157. =======================
  158. Windows MCI drivers are the most common way to support multimedia files.
  159. Unfortunately, many MCI drivers still have bugs, and these bugs can cause
  160. all kinds of glitches when CompuPic attempts to support them.
  161.  
  162. CompuPic has been extensively tested with commonly available MCI drivers and
  163. has worked very reliably.  Before you suspect that CompuPic is the problem,
  164. please verify that the MCI driver for the type of file you're trying to play
  165. works with the Microsoft Windows Media Player (MPLAYER.EXE in the Windows
  166. directory.)

  169.    TO RUN MEDIA PLAYER

  171.      1) Using the File manager, locate the file called MPLAYER.EXE or
  172.           MPLAY32.EXE.
  173.      2) Double click on the media player executable file to execute it.

  176.    TO TEST AN MCI DRIVER
  177.    ---------------------
  178.      1) Select 'Open' from the 'File' menu and find a file to test.  You
  179.           can tell the file type by the file's extension (AVI, MOV, MPG,
  180.           WAV, MID, RMI, FLI, etc.)
  181.      2) Click on the "double right arrows" button to start the file
  182.           playing.  If the file plays, then it is possible to set the CPIC
  183.           options so the MCI driver is supported.

  185. IF FILES PLAY IN THE MEDIA PLAYER
  186. ---------------------------------
  187. If files play using Media Player but do NOT play using CPIC, then the
  188. problem has to do with a bug in the MCI that is being aggravated by an
  189. Options setting in CompuPic.  Run CompuPic, and select the Multimedia
  190. option in the Options menu.  Modify the settings for the file type and
  191. see which combination works.
