F-22 Lightning II Demo
NovaLogic is proud to offer this nearly full featured demonstration of our
popular F-22 Lightning II flight simulation. Now you can fly this awesome
aircraft and test your fighter-pilot skills against a collection of deadly
adversaries like the Su-27 Flanker, EF-2000 Eurofighter, and MiG-29 Fulcrum.
Because it is only a demo however, it lacks the multiplayer capability of the
regular program. (The full version of F-22 Lightning II allows up to eight
players to participate simultaneously in Head-to-Head contests or Cooperative
play via a network connection. It also supports two player modem and serial
cable connections as well.).
I. Demo Installation and Set-Up Procedure
In order to play the F-22 Lightning II Demo, you must first install the demo
program on your hard drive. An installation program has been included with
this demo. This installation program leads you directly into the Setup
program. The Setup program in turn enables you to configure the demo for play
with your particular hardware. Follow the simple steps below.
A. Installing the F-22 Demo Program
1. Download (copy) the f22demo.exe file to your hard drive. Make a note of
where you place it.
2. The f22demo.exe file is a self-extracting executable program. Once you have
finished downloading it to your hard drive, you must extract the program
files. To extract the program files, follow the steps outlined below.
a) Windows(tm) 95 users
Use Windows Explorer to go to folder (directory) on your hard drive where you
have placed the f22demo(.exe) file. Double-click on the f22demo(.exe) program
icon. (Depending upon your Windows(tm) settings, the f22demo icon may or may not
have an .exe extension assigned to it.) Two new files will extract to the
folder where f22demo is currently located. These are install.exe and
install.bin.
Once these files have been created, run the install.exe program. This will
install the f22demo program on your computer. To run the install.exe program,
double-click on the install(.exe) program icon. (Depending upon your Windows
settings the install icon may or may not have an .exe extension assigned to
it.) The game should now begin installing itself on your hard drive.
b) DOS (or Windows(tm) 3.1) users
If you are running Windows(tm) 3.1, exit from Windows(tm) completely and run the
installation program from DOS. Change to the folder (directory) where you have
downloaded the f22demo.exe file. At the DOS prompt, extract the programs files
by typing: f22demo <press enter>.
Two new files will extract to the folder where f22demo is currently located.
These are install.exe and install.bin.
Once these files have been created, run the install.exe program. This will
install the f22demo program on your computer. To run the install.exe program,
at the DOS prompt install the demo files by typing: install <press enter>.
3. The installation program displays a directory destination screen. The
default destination for these files is C:\f22demo. Use this destination or
enter a different destination directory (complete with path) of your own. The
progress of the installation routine is displayed on your screen as a
percentage. When the installation process is complete you are prompted to run
the Setup program.
B. F-22 Demo Setup
1. F22 Setup Main Menu Screen
There are four system settings to configure: Video setup, Audio setup,
Multiplayer setup, and Performance settings. Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys (or
press the highlighted (colored) letter or number) to access menu selections.
Press the ENTER key to make a selection. Press the ESC key to back up to a
previous screen or press the Alt and X keys to exit. When you are finished
with the Setup routine, be sure to select Exit and Save settings. If you
select Exit only, you will exit Setup without saving your selections. You will
have to go back and re-do all your settings.
a) Video Setup: This menu selection is used to configure and test your video
setup. This selection takes you immediately to the Video setup screen. Simply
follow the on-screen instructions for setting-up and testing your VESA driver.
Note that the preferred selection is VESA 2.0, however this newer driver has
been found to be faulty on some video cards. Choose VESA 1.0 for greater
compatibility as an override.
b) Audio Setup: This menu selection is used to configure and test your audio
setup. Your menu options are:

game. The full version of F-22 Lightning II features a comprehensive
multiplayer environment.
d) Performance Settings: This menu selection is used to configure your system
in order to increase its performance and provide for faster and smoother play.
Your menu options on this screen are:
Use page flipping: Page flipping is a technique which can produce smoother
animation. Some video devices do not properly support page flipping however.
If your video display acts erratically when using page flipping, leave this
item unchecked.
Use VESA for low res: VESA drivers are found on most video devices today.
These drivers form the link between your program and the video card. If you
notice video corruption or slow video performance when playing the F-22demo in
a low res mode, try un-checking Use VESA for low res to fix the problem.
Slow CD ROM (2X speed): The demo does not require the services of your CD
drive. It runs entirely off your hard drive.
2. Altering your initial Setup program settings
Setup is a program that is copied to your f22demo folder (C:\f22demo) during
installation. It is run for you as part of your initial installation.

II. Introduction to F-22 Lightning II
The F-22 Lightning II is America╒s advanced tactical fighter. It is designed
to meet the challenges of air combat in the 21st century. This aircraft is the
stealth fighter that the F-117A never was. Not only is the F-22 nearly
invisible to enemy radar, it carries heat-seeking and radar-guided air-to-air
missiles plus "super smart" air-to-ground bombs. Its engines are equipped with
vectored thrust nozzles which give it excellent slow speed handling
characteristics. At high speeds, its engines use a fuel efficient
╥supercruise╙ mode, allowing it to travel very fast without resorting to a
fuel guzzling afterburner.
The F-22's low observable (LO) characteristics make it a ghost, an apparition
in the night able to sneak up on ground targets and destroy them with
precision munitions. The F-22 carries Mk. 83 conventional bombs specially
fitted with JDAM guidance packages. The JDAM system uses GPS (Global
Positioning System) targeting data for guidance rather than tell-tale radar or
infrared systems. The pilot can release JDAM ordnance while undetected and hit
targets with unmatched accuracy.
A. The F-22 Demo Menu Screen
Because this is only a Demo version, you do not have access to everything this
simulation has to offer. You'll notice that the Main Menu screen contains a
number of subdued (grayed out) menu selections. These selections have been
placed off limits. The only selections available to you are: Quick Mission,
Options, and Exit.
1. Quick Mission
This demo comes with one introductory mission instead of the five combat
theaters/ campaigns and training tutorials you get with the regular version.
After takeoff, you╒ll probably encounter an AWACS aircraft being escorted by
two F-16s. These are friendly aircraft so don't blast them. ....but should you
get an itchy trigger finger use the TAB key or the return key to target these
aircraft. You'll see a small Target Designator box appear around the aircraft.
When the box turns red, fire away!!! Be aware that self preservation is an
instinct these guys possess. If you attack them, they will respond so be ready
to fight.
2. Options
This selection takes you to the Options menu screen. Here you are given the
ability to change or tailor certain options from within the game.
a) Speed
Video Mode allows you to choose between three different levels of video
resolution; 320 x 240, 400 x 300, and 640 x 480. Note that in multiplayer mode
not all players need to have their video set to the same resolution.
Sky Detail allows you to choose between low or high levels of cloud realism.
Terrain Texturing makes great demands upon your processor. This option allows
you to set the distance at which hazing effects will obscures the terrain
texturing. If you are playing on a slower computer, this factor should be
reduced.
b) Memory
Object and Terrain resolution are affected by the amount of memory and
processor speed. If the game runs slowly on your computer, these resolution
settings should be reduced.
c) Sound
Sound Effects and Music Volume can be adjusted using the sliding scale located
here.
d) More Options (Controls and Effects)
Joystick: Your options are: No Joystick, Two Button Joystick, Four Button
Joystick, CH Flightstick Pro, Thrustmaster and others.
e) Throttle: Your options are: No, Yes, and Reversed. (A reversed throttle
accelerates the aircraft by pulling back on the yoke rather than pushing it
forward.)
f) Footpedals: Press Yes if you want to use actual footpedal rudder controls
rather than use the Delete and Page Down keys.
g) Redouts/ Blackouts: F-22 realistically simulates the effects of "redding
out" in negative G situations and "blacking out" under the effects of positive
G's. In pilot slang this is known as GLOC (Gravity-induced Loss of
Consciousness.) These effects can be turned On and Off here if desired.
3. Exit Game
This option exits you from the demo. We do hope that what you╒ve seen so far
prompts to want to purchase the full version of F-22 Lightning II.
B. Your Quick Mission Choices
1. Quick Mission 1
Basic Flight
Desert Day
This is a simple "check ride" flight over the desert surrounding Nellis Air
Force Base, Nevada. The mission takes place during daylight hours in
conditions of almost unlimited visibility. There is a slight breeze from the
southwest. The desert terrain is remarkably beautiful ranging from flat desert
at sea level (and below) to sharp mountain peaks. Mt. Charleston for instance,
is visible immediately west of the runway. Death Valley, California and the
mountains of the Sierra Nevadas are located approximately 130 nm. northwest of
the runway. Enjoy the sights.
This mission is included in the demo as a way for you to familiarize yourself
with the aircraft and its controls in a safe, non-threatening environment
(forget for a moment that Nellis AFB is near Las Vegas). See if you can learn
to fly the F-22 without "cashing in your chips."
Note the control key summary in the mission briefing window. If you need
immediate help, press the K key for a partial list of the control keys and
their functions. A complete list of all control keys and function is included
below along with an abbrieviated Key Control Summary.
