  495.  
  496. 1.  Files with the "-" (dash) character in the filename
  497.     that are compressed in Zipped files will not be scanned
  498.     by the on-demand scanner.
  499.  
  500. 2.  Windows 95 no longer requires MS-DOS memory managers. 
  501.     Using MS-DOS memory managers may cause VirusScan95
  502.     to falsely detect viruses in memory. To eliminate
  503.     false warnings, remark (Rem) the memory manager lines
  504.     from your CONFIG.SYS to deactivate them.
  505.  
  506. 3.  ScreenScan is not currently compatible with Windows 95
  507.     3-D screen savers or third-party ScreenSavers. A stand-
  508.     ard Windows 95 screen saver must be selected and
  509.     ScreenScan must be enabled in order to scan during
  510.     screen saver operation.
  511.     
  512. 4.  After uninstalling ScreenScan, the screen saver will
  513.     be set to None. You can reactivate your screen saver
  514.     from the Display Properties.
  515.  
  516. 5.  ScreenScan's log file has a maximum size of 100K. If
  517.     the file reaches this size, the oldest data will be
  518.     deleted. To retain logging data, you should edit the
  519.     content to keep the log file under 100K or save the
  520.     oldest data to another file.
  521.  
  522. 6.  ScreenScan will stop scanning after it detects a virus
  523.     and prompt you to launch VirusScan. If you have
  524.     additional viruses on your system, ScreenScan will not
  525.     notify you until the next time it activates. McAfee
  526.     recommends that you scan and clean your entire system
  527.     with VirusScan whenever ScreenScan detects a virus.
  528.  
  529. 7.  ScreenScan is designed to display the Centralized
  530.     Alerting and Reporting settings as declared in the
  531.     DEFAULT.VSC file. Actual configuration of ScreenScan
  532.     Centralized Alerting and Reporting must be done
  533.     through the procedures outlined in the Frequently
  534.     Asked Questions section below.
  535.

  537. INSTALLATION         
  538.  
  539. * INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
  540.  
  541. If you would like to perform a "silent" installation
  542. of VirusScan, requiring minimal user interaction and
  543. using all default or "Typical" installation settings,
  544. add -s (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s) to the setup command when
  545. you install the product.
  546.  
  547. Network Administrators can customize the silent
  548. installation by following the steps below.
  549.  
  550. 1.  Check in the Windows directory to ensure that a
  551.     file named SETUP.ISS does not already exist. If it
  552.     does, rename it, back it up, or delete it.
  553.  
  554. 2.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -r switch, (i.e. SETUP.EXE -r).
  555.  
  556. 3.  Select the components you would like to be installed
  557.     during the silent installation.  All responses will
  558.     be recorded.
  559.  
  560. 4.  Finish the installation, and locate the file SETUP.ISS
  561.     in the Windows directory.
  562.  
  563. 5.  Open the file using any ASCII editor (e.g., NOTEPAD.EXE)
  564.     and delete the section titled  APPLICATION.
  565.  
  566. 6.  Locate the section [SdSetupType-0] in the SETUP.ISS
  567.     file and go to the line:
  568.  
  569.         Result=x
  570.  
  571.         where x is equal to
  572.         301 (Typical installation)
  573.         302 (Compact installation)
  574.         303 (Custom installation)
  575.  
  576. 7.  Add 100 to the above value, so that the Result
  577.     variable is equal to 401, 402, or 403. Modifying
  578.     this file will allow the installation to copy the
  579.     VirusScan files to the drive where the operating
  580.     system resides instead of defaulting to the C:
  581.     drive.
  582.  
  583. 8.  Rename, back up, or delete SETUP.ISS on the first
  584.     installation disk (floppies only). For CD-ROM versions
  585.     of the product, you must copy the installation files
  586.     onto the hard drive before taking this step.
  587.  
  588. 9.  Copy the new SETUP.ISS from the Windows directory
  589.     to the location of the installation files.
  590.  
  591. 10. Run SETUP.EXE with the -s switch (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s).
  592.  
  593.     NOTE: If you do not specify a "recorded" answer for
  594.     all dialog boxes during the initial installation, the
  595.     silent installation will fail. Also, the file used
  596.     for the silent installation, SETUP.ISS, may not work
  597.     properly across different operating systems. For
  598.     example, if the silent install is generated for
  599.     Windows 95, it may not work properly in Windows 3.1x
  600.     or Windows NT.
  601.  
  602. 11. When the silent installation is complete, you should
  603.     reboot the machine manually.

  726. effort by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to 
  727. come up with one standard by which customers can verify 
  728. their anti-virus installations. To test your 
  729. installation, copy the following line into its own 
  730. file and name it EICAR.COM.

  789.     Reporting?

  791. A:  VirusScan v.2.0.8 or higher now supports Centralized
  792.     Alerting and Reporting to a remote NetWare or
  793.     Windows NT server running NetShield for Windows NT
  794.     v2.5.3 or NetShield for NetWare v2.3.3.

  796.     To configure this option on your VirusScan client,
  797.     modify Scan95's DEFAULT.VSH and DEFAULT.VSC, and/or
  798.     your custom settings file to read the following:

  800.     Note: Administrators will need to configure the
  801.     AlertOptions section in both the .VSH and .VSC files
  802.     for complete Centralized Alerting & Reporting. Add the
  803.     following lines to the AlertOptions section:

  806.     .VSC file. You must manually create this section in the

  841. A:  Yes. The first time you download VirusScan95, the
  842.     McAfee Online Purchase Wizard will prompt you to select
  843.     the transmission method you prefer to download and to
  844.     transmit your encrypted credit card information.

  846.     At the Transaction Connection Type dialog box, select
  847.     Internet to download your order via the Internet.
  848.     At the Security Connection Type dialog box, select
  849.     Direct Dial Modem to transmit your credit card
  850.     information via modem.

  853. Q:  While downloading a licensed copy of VirusScan95, the
  854.     installation was interrupted and/or canceled. Where can
  855.     I find my licensed VirusScan files and how do I proceed

  858. A:  The files are in the VSint folder located in the
  859.     Windows Temp directory. Double click on SETUP.EXE
  860.     within the VSint folder to continue with the
  861.     installation.

  864. Q:  I have created my own Emergency diskette, how
  865.     can I optimize it's performance?
  866.  
  867. A:  For optimal performance, create a CONFIG.SYS file on
  868.     the boot diskette and add the following lines:

  872.        DOS=HIGH

  874.     Add the HIMEM.SYS file from the DOS directory or if you

  885. A: #1  Enter LocalDrives or NetworkDrives in the

  887.        page. Click Scan Now and all LocalDrives or all

  890. A: #2  VirusScan95 can scan many locations simultaneously.
  891.        To do this, take these steps:
  892.        1.  Launch Explorer.
  893.        2.  Highlight the drives or folders you want to
  894.            scan.

  897.        5.  Click Scan Now to begin scans.

  900. Q:  I moved a VSC file to my Startup folder.
  901.     Whenever I turn on my PC, it launches VirusScan95,
  902.     but it does not begin scanning. How can I make it
  903.     start scanning automatically?

  905. A:  You need to customize your options. Take these
  906.     steps:

  908.     1.  Navigate to the location of the saved VSC file.
  909.     2.  While pointing to the VSC file, right-click to
  910.         reveal the Context Menu.
  911.     3.  From the Context Menu, select Properties.  
  912.     4.  Select the Options Tab on the property sheet. 
  913.     5.  Check the Start Automatically box.
  914.  
  915.     By enabling this option, scanning will begin 
  916.     automatically. If viruses are not detected
  917.     VirusScan95 will automatically close and free up
  918.     system resources.

  921. Q:  When VirusScan95 is launched, how does it determine
  922.     the default settings?

  924. A:  VirusScan95 default settings may be found in the 
  925.     DEFAULT.VSC file located in the install directory.

  928. Q:  How can I tell that ScreenScan is working?
  929.  
  930. A:  ScreenScan does not alert you when it is
  931.     scanning your system. However, if you enable
  932.     the logging option during your configuration,
  933.     all ScreenScan activity will be recorded in a
  934.     log file in the Installation directory.

  937. Q:  Can I update McAfee's data files to detect
  938.     new viruses?

  940. A:  Yes. If your data files are out-of-date, VirusScan95
  941.     will prompt you to update them. If you have a modem
  942.     or Internet connection, you can use VirusScan's new
  943.     electronic update feature for easy data file updates.
  944.     The data file updates are free for the life of the
  945.     scan engine. Through the electronic update feature,
  946.     you can also purchase one year of data file updates,
  947.     engine upgrades, and technical support.

  955. The new Administrative Mode feature allows System
  956. Administrators to lock VirusScan95 configurations on
  957. users' systems. To use this feature, take the following
  958. steps:

  961.     VirusScan95 icon.

  963. 2.  Press and hold the Ctrl+Shift+Alt keys and
  964.     double-click the magnifying glass icon.

  968. 4.  Select Administrator Mode.

  970.     a.  Enter a new password.
  971.     b.  Confirm your new password.

  973. 5.  Choose your configurations from the What & Where,

  985.     setting, save the new settings by overwriting

  990.     optional settings will be locked and cannot be
  991.     altered without knowledge of the access keys,
