OCR: Knee Cartilage Bone Synovial Fluid Knee joints are lined at their margins by synovial cells. These cells have the capacity for protein synthesis and phagocytosis. The primary function of the synovial fluid is to lubricate the joint space. Normal synovial fluid has excellent lubricating qualities due to ith high content of hyaluronic acid. Breakdown of this material as seen in inflammatory disease process makedly impairs its lubricating ability. In this process any movement of the joint becomes extremely painful.
