  37. 1.  WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  38. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  40.   SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
  41.   to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
  42.   1991.  In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
  43.   SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
  44.  
  45.   SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, an
  46.   individual window or a user defined portion of the screen.  SnagIt
  47.   also accepts input directly from the Windows clipboard or a Windows
  48.   bitmap (BMP) file.  Once captured, SnagIt will send the image to the
  49.   printer, the clipboard, a graphics file or to e-mail.
  50.  
  51.   Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such
  52.   as word processors and desktop publishing programs from the Windows
  53.   clipboard or by importing the images from saved graphic files.
  54.  
  55.   Software developers will find that SnagIt's full DDE support allows
  56.   it's functionality to easily be incorporated into other Windows
  57.   applications.  SnagIt also provides MAPI support for Windows 95 and
  58.   NT, allowing captured images to be readily sent in an e-mail message.
  59.  
  60. 1.1 What is the SnagIt Twin Pack?
  61.  
  62.   Many organizations are in the early stages of the transition from
  63.   Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 or NT.  To assist during this period,
  64.   TechSmith is offering the SnagIt Twin Pack.  It includes a 16-bit
  65.   version, tailored for Windows 3.1x, as well as a true 32-bit version
  66.   for Windows 95 and NT. The setup program automatically detects the
  67.   workstation's operating environment and loads the appropriate
  68.   version.  The purchaser is licensed to run either version and to
  69.   switch between them without further payment. Purchasing the Twin
  70.   Pack provides the benefits of running SnagIt today without the
  71.   penalty of Windows 95 or NT upgrade fees in the future.

  74. 2.  SNAGIT TWIN PACK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  75. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  77.   In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  78.  
  79.   o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware
  80.      requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.
  81.  
  82.   o  Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows For Workgroups 3.1x,
  83.      Windows NT 3.5x or Windows 95 installed and configured on your
  84.      system.
  85.  
  86.   o  A mouse or other pointing device
  87.  
  88.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  89.      bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  90.      printers that Windows supports.  Plotters are not recommended for
  91.      use with SnagIt due to their inability to print bitmaps.)
  92.  
  93.   o  For e-mail output, a 32 bit MAPI mail client (e.g. Microsoft
  94.      Exchange) must be installed and running
  95.

  114. 3.  GETTING HELP
  115. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  117. 3.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
  118.  
  119.   SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  120.   subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
  121.   you'll need to use SnagIt, except for the SnagIt installation
  122.   procedure. This (README.TXT) file describes how to install SnagIt.
  123.  
  124.   To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
  125.   Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  126.  
  127.   To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
  128.   the Help menu.
  129.  
  130.   To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
  131.   select System Info from the Help menu.

  175. 5.  KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS

  178. 5.1 32-bit Version - SnagIt/32
  179.  
  180.     o  SnagIt/32 hangs on e-mail output on Windows 95 if only 16-bit
  181.        MS Mail has been configured (i.e. MAPI is in use, but neither
  182.        MS Exchange or any other 32-bit MAPI mail client has been
  183.        configured).
  184.  
  185.     o  The captured cursor type is always the arrow cursor.
  186.  
  187.     o  One viewer (LView Pro 1.C/32) complains when loading a JPEG
  188.        file output by SnagIt.  The viewer says "premature end of JPEG
  189.        file" but will still view the file successfully.
  190.  
  191.     o  The Include Cursor option is not active for the Last Active
  192.        Window input selection.
  193.  
  194. 5.2 16-bit Version - SnagIt
  195.  
  196.     o  SnagIt does not support e-mail as an output (i.e. MAPI mail 
  197.        clients).
  198.  
  199.     o  SnagIt does not support JPEG or compressed BMP graphic file
  200.        formats.
  201.  
  202.     o  SnagIt does not support using the PrintScreen key to initiate
  203.        a capture.

  206. 6.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
  207. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  209. 6.1 Installation Instructions
  210.  
  211.   The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  212.   application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  213.   NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  214.   automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  215.   appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
  216.   the following steps:
  217.  
  218.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  219.  
  220.   2. Insert the SnagIt Twin Pack diskette into a floppy drive.
  221.  
  222.   For Windows 95 users:
  223.  
  224.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  225.  
  226.   For Windows 3.1x and Windows NT users:
  227.  
  228.   3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  229.      from the drop down menu.
  230.  
  231.   For all users:
  232.  
  233.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  234.           a:\setup
  235.      (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than
  236.      the A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the
  237.      command line above.)
  238.  
  239.   5. Click on the OK button.
  240.  
  241.   6. When you have finished entering the setup information, click on
  242.      the Install button to install SnagIt.
  243.  
  244. 6.2  Uninstall Instructions
  245.  
  246.   If after installing SnagIt Twin Pack, you find it necessary to
  247.   remove the software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  248.  
  249.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows 3.1x and WFW 3.1x
  250.  
  251.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  252.  
  253.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt was
  254.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press
  255.      the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  256.  
  257.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt when Windows Starts" when
  258.      installing SnagIt, delete SnagIt from the Startup group.
  259.  
  260.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  261.      SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  262.      you wish to delete the program item.
  263.  
  264.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  265.      installed SnagIt.  Delete the files SNAGIT.EXE and SNAGIT.HLP.
  266.  
  267.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 95
  268.  
  269.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  270.  
  271.   For Windows 95 users:
  272.  
  273.   2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now
  274.      configure your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced
  275.      button.
  276.  
  277.   3. Find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was installed. Click
  278.      once on the SnagIt/32 filename to highlight it. Press the delete
  279.      key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  280.  
  281.   4. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  282.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  283.  
  284.      Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  285.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  286.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  287.  
  288.   5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory in which you
  289.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and 
  290.      SnagIt32.HLP.
  291.  
  292.   For Windows NT users:
  293.  
  294.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was
  295.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it.
  296.      Press the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program
  297.      item.
  298.  
  299.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  300.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  301.  
  302.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  303.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  304.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  305.  
  306.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  307.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and
  308.      SnagIt32.HLP.

  311. 7.  STARTING AND USING SNAGIT
  312. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  313.  
  314.   To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
  315.   group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during
  316.   SnagIt installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
  317.  
  318.   Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring
  319.   it to the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt is
  320.   maximized, you may change any of the setup options (input, output,
  321.   format, etc.) from the SnagIt menus.
  322.  
  323.   You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an
  324.   image) while it is maximized, though it will usually be more
  325.   convenient to minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
  326.  
  327.   If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during
  328.   installation, SnagIt will start automatically the next time you
  329.   start Windows.
  330.  
  331. 7.1 SnagIt Default Settings
  332.  
  333.   When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
  334.  
  335.   o  Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked,
  336.      it will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  337.  
  338.   o  Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt is
  339.      invoked, it will send the captured image to the Windows default
  340.      printer for printing.
  341.  
  342.   o  Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt will capture the
  343.      image with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can
  344.      print images using this format setting, even if your printer is
  345.      not a color printer. For additional information about SnagIt
  346.      format options, see the Format options topic in the SnagIt Help
  347.      file.)
  348.  
  349.   o  Scale is set to 1.00.  This means that SnagIt will output the
  350.      image at the same pixel size as it appears on the Windows screen.
  351.      This setting may result in a smaller printed image than you want;
  352.      to adjust the image size, see the Scale topic in the SnagIt Help
  353.      file.
  354.  
  355.   Refer to the SnagIt Help file for additional information on setting
  356.   SnagIt's input, output, format and other options.
  357.  
  358.   You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom
  359.   of the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.
  360.  
  361. 7.2 Invoking SnagIt with <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  362.  
  363.   Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are
  364.   ready to perform screen captures with SnagIt.
  365.  
  366.   The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  367.   When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined
  368.   by the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the
  369.   output device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different
  370.   hot-key combination, see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help
  371.   file.

  373. 7.3 Using the Mouse to Select Images
  374.  
  375.   You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
  376.   The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  377.  
  378.   Left Button     Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen
  379.                   regions and windows to capture.
  380.  
  381.   Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press
  382.                   it before you finish making the selection (that is,
  383.                   before you release the left mouse button).
  384.

  389.   SnagIt Twin Pack is a product of TechSmith Corporation.  SnagIt

  395.   Registration entitles the licensee to install either the 32 bit or
  396.   the 16 bit version of SnagIt and to switch between the two without

  401.   Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
