  48. This version is primarily intended for users of Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
  49. 3.1/3.11 and Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11.
  50.  
  51. Note that this version is a 16-bit program and therefore you do not need
  52. to have Win32s(R) installed on your computer.

  54. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT(R), you can download 
  55. a version designed and optimized for these platforms at

  58. This product enables you to browse and view HTML documents on the network, 
  59. in addition to documents on the World Wide Web or Internet. Other services, 
  60. such as Gopher and FTP, and NNTP news support, are also available.

  63. Windows 3.1 on your system are provided below.

  97. Installing from the Internet

  100. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, carry out 
  101. the following procedure.
  102.  
  103. 1. Create a temporary directory on your computer.
  104. 2. Choose to download Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, 
  105.    and save the file Dlbase.exe to the temporary directory.
  106. 3. In File Manager, run Dlbase.exe to extract the program files.
  107. 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
  108.    with existing TCP/IP connections.
  109. 5. In File Manager, run Setup.exe. Setup installs files in the 
  110.    directory you specify.
  111. 6. If you want, you can delete the temporary directory you created.
  112. 7. Run Internet Explorer.

  115. Upgrading over Version 1.5 and Version 1.6 Beta
  116. -----------------------------------------------

  118. If you are upgrading from the version 1.5 or version 1.6 beta, please 
  119. read the following special notes.
  120.  
  121. - The format of Iexplore.ini has changed, so Setup will make a backup
  122.   copy of your current Iexplore.ini file to a file called Ie16ini.sav.
  123. - You will need to reapply any user-selectable settings, such as proxy 
  124.   servers, in the new version.
  125. - Your Favorites and History list will be preserved.
  126. - Win32s is not required for this version, so if you installed Win32s 
  127.   specifically to run the version 1.6 beta, then you can remove it from
  128.   your system. Please refer to the following URL for instructions on 
  129.   removing Win32s from your system.

  134. LAN Installations
  135. -----------------

  137. If you already have access to the Internet through your LAN, 
  138. you will be able to use the Microsoft Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. 
  139. (If you are not sure whether you currently have access, consult your network 
  140. administrator.)
  141.  
  142. If you have access, your LAN administrator should provide you with 
  143. proxy servers that also can be used, provided they are CERN compliant.
  144.  
  145. To install Internet Explorer, you need to do the following:
  146.  
  147. - Make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol installed.
  148.  
  149. - Run the installation in Custom mode, and make sure that the TCP/IP 
  150.   Stack And Dialer check box is not selected.
  151.  
  152. Proxy servers can also be used, provided they are CERN compliant.
  153. To enable use of a proxy server, choose Options from the View menu,
  154. and then on the Proxy tab, type the data needed for your proxy server.

  157. Installing a Modem and Using the Dialer
  158. ---------------------------------------

  160. Please note that this version of the Dialer will support only COM modems. This
  161. means that PCMCIA and other internal non-COM modems will not be supported.
  162. They will be supported in future releases.
  163.  
  164. Before setting up, please make sure that your modem is turned on and properly
  165. connected. Setup will try to detect and configure your modem. If the detection
  166. fails, you can still select the modem manually from the list of supported
  167. modems.

  169. Note: When you select a modem manually, the default connection speed will be 
  170. 9600 baud. Therefore, you should manually select a connection speed that matches
  171. your modem's capabilities, in order to get the maximum connection speed.

  174. Installation with Existing TCP/IP Connections and ISP Accounts
  175. --------------------------------------------------------------

  177. Microsoft Internet Explorer has been installed and tested with several 
  178. of the most popular Internet access products available today. If it is 
  179. configured properly, you should be able to use the TCP/IP protocol and 
  180. dialer (via Winsock.dll) provided with these products to connect with your ISP. 
  181. It is not necessary to install the Dialer and TCP/IP stack that are provided with 
  182. Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  183.  
  184. In general, all that is required is that you configure the PATH command 
  185. in your Autoexec.bat file so that Microsoft Internet Explorer can find 
  186. the Winsock.dll file you are using to connect to the Internet. For 
  187. example, if your Winsock.dll file is in the directory C:\Connect, add
  188. a line directly under your current PATH command that reads:
  189.     PATH=%PATH%;C:\CONNECT
  190.  
  191. Following are procedures for installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 
  192. over some common Internet access products. Other packages available 
  193. include FTP Software, Network TeleSystems, and shareware from Trumpet 
  194. Software (http://www.trumpet.com.au/wsk/winsock.htm).

  200. 1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to the suggested default 
  201.    directory (C:\Iexplore).
  202. 2. Make sure that the Internet Chameleon directory is in your path. 
  203.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  204.    file, and then restart your computer.
  205. 3. Run the Internet Chameleon dialer program (from the Custom icon).
  206. 4. Select the line corresponding to your current Internet service 
  207.    provider, and make sure that the Dial On Demand command on the 
  208.    Setup menu has a check mark by it. This makes the dialer 
  209.    program run when Microsoft Internet Explorer tries to 
  210.    connect to the Internet.
  211. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet icon 
  212.    in Program Manager.

  214. If you have configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, an 
  215. Internet connection will be made when you first enter an Internet 
  216. address in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
