Transcription: From the book, The Place of Houses. If the places where we live are to reflect the act of living, they must be rooted in the present, in the actualities of sites and families. All space should belong to something tangible, like a grove or a brook, an active street, or a memorable and evocative form. Or it should belong to someone. Space that is defined only by prohibitions on its use cannot belong to a living inhabited world. To seem inhabited, a place must show evidence that there are people about.
