  3. If you are reading this mail file as received, it is a "shar" (shell
  4. archive).  It contains two files:  these instructions, and a uuencoded file
  5. containing the L-Z compressed PCL-3 download image of a typeset Rock Ridge
  6. document.

  8. 0. Save this mail message in a file, assumed to be named "/tmp/file.shar"
  9.    for the purposes of these instructions.

  11. 1. Unpack the shar.
  12.  
  13.    Remove everything above the line containing "# This is a shell archive".
  14.    Insert one blank line.  On a Unix system or other system with a Bourne
  15.    shell command line interpreter, execute:

  17.    /bin/sh /tmp/file.shar
  18.  
  19. 2. uudecode the second (pcl.Z) file.
  20.  
  21.    The shar contains a version of uudecode and will automatically compile
  22.    and execute it.
  23.  
  24. 3. Uncompress the pcl.Z file (assumed to be xyzzy.pcl.Z).

  26.    uncompress xyzzy.pcl.Z
  27.  
  28. 4. Print the file.
  29.  
  30.    You will need a LaserJet Plus or other HP-PCL level 3 compatible printer
  31.    with at least 512 Kbytes of RAM.  The original LaserJet does not support
  32.    font downloads.  Double-sided printers may require more RAM (or may need
  33.    to be temporarily reconfigured for single-sided operation).

  35.    Your system's printer driver and spooler need to support transparent
  36.    8-bit I/O and need to provide a "raw" or "uncooked" mode.  On an HP-UX
  37.    system, the appropriate command would be (assuming the printer is "lp"):

  39.    lp -oraw xyzzy.pcl
  40.  
  41.    The *.pcl file contains escape sequences that will delete some or all of
  42.    any existing downloaded fonts in your printer.  No font cartridges are
  43.    required or used.  The *.pcl file contains all soft fonts needed by each
  44.    document.  These are downloaded into the printer as part of the data
  45.    stream, and will remain as "permanent" soft fonts after the printing
  46.    completes.  If your system has a font manager, reset it after printing
  47.    the *.pcl files.
