  29. MORE INSTALLATION NOTES:
  30.  
  31. This section documents what the Kudo installer does during installation:
  32.  
  33. - Application files are copied to the target directory, typically c:\kudo
  34.  
  35. - The installer searches for the Microsoft OLE 2.0 DLLs on your machine. Three 
  36. things can happen as a result of this search:
  37.  
  38.     1) If they are found (as the result of someone having installed 
  39.     another OLE 2.0 compliant application), and they are of the same or 
  40.     a newer version as the copies that Kudo is shipped with, then nothing
  41.     is done.  
  42.  
  43.     2) If they are found but are of an older version than the 
  44.     copies Kudo is shipped with, then the Kudo installer will copy its
  45.     newer versions over the existing ones, wherever it might find them 
  46.     on your machine.

  48.     3) If they are not found, Kudo places new copies of all the OLE 2.0 
  49.     DLLs into your windows\system directory.

  54. KUDO READER PLACEMENT MODULES
  55.     Kudo Catalog Reader ships with several placement modules developed for
  56. each program: QUARKXPRESS, ALDUS PAGEMAKER, MICROSOFT WORD, and WORD PERFECT.
  57. These files are called XXXXXXXX.KPP and are installed in your catalog reader's
  58. directory.
  59.  
  60. >    For QUARKXPRESS users upto 3.1, please copy the M_QUARK.XXT file located in 
  61. your catalog reader directory into the directory where QUARKXPRESS is installed.
  62. Incase if you have upgraded your QuarkXpress installation from 3.x to 3.31 or later,
  63. you can still copy this file if you are troubles using drag and drop.

  68. The OLE 2.0 DLLs are functionally an extension to the Windows 3.1 operating 
  69. system, and so are effectively not a part of Kudo at all.  This means that,
  70. once installed, they are available for all applications that support OLE 2.0,
  71. and need not be installed more than once.  Other OLE 2.0 compliant applications
  72. will generally observe this convention, and will not duplicate these files in
  73. their installation if they are already present.  For this reason, if you 
  74. un-install Kudo, it may be risky to remove these files unless you are certain
  75. there are not other applications that rely on them.  The OLE 2.0 DLLs are:
  76.  
  77.     ole2.dll
  78.     ole2conv.dll
  79.     ole2disp.dll
  80.     ole2nls.dll
  81.     ole2prox.dll
  82.     compobj.dll
  83.     storage.dll
  84.  
  85. - An additional DLL, BWCC.DLL is installed following an identical procedure
  86. to the OLE DLLs.  This file fills a support function and is shipped with
  87. many applications.
  88.  
  89. - The Kudo installer determines if it needs to modify AUTOEXEC.BAT.  You will 
  90. be prompted before it modifies the file.  If you agree to modification, the 
  91. line:
  92.     SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100
  93.  
  94. will be added to AUTOEXEC.BAT.  If there is already a line present that loads 
  95. SHARE, then that line will be modified to ensure that the /L and /F options 
  96. are at least as large as the amount that Kudo requires.
  97.  
  98. - The Kudo installer then registers Kudo as an application with Windows, 
  99. and takes care of registering OLE 2.0 on your machine.  Effectively, this 
  100. modifies the registration database, REG.DAT, in your windows directory, and 
  101. indirectly, your WIN.INI file.  It is accomplished by running REGEDIT.EXE
  102. with the files OLE2.REG and KUDO.REG, which are installed to your target Kudo 
  103. directory.  This operation can be repeated manually if REG.DAT ever becomes 
  104. corrupted, see tech note file "REGEDIT.TXT".

  107. Known Installation Problems:
  108.  
  109. Two situations have been observed to cause problems with the installer:
  110.  
  111. 1) Installing to a PC that is configured as a diskless workstation can confuse
  112. the installer as to the whereabouts of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  In this 
  113. situation, the installer generally cannot access your boot drive.  When the
  114. installer attempts to modify your autoexec file, it will probably come 
  115. up with a path to an AUTOEXEC.BAT that doesn't exist, such as A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  116. If this happens, you will need to make the modifications yourself. Select
  117. the option to NOT have the Kudo installer modify your autoexec file, and
  118. then, after the installation is complete, manually add the line:
  119.         <path>\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100
  120. to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  <path> is the full path to your DOS directory 
  121. (or wherever SHARE.EXE exists).  The /L & /F options are suggested minimums.
  122. If you are already loading SHARE in your autoexec, then you only need to
  123. ensure that you add the command line options to the SHARE statement.  If
  124. the options are already there, and they are larger, then leave them alone.
  125. If they are there but are smaller, then use the values suggested here.
  126. You will need to reboot your computer for this change to take effect.
  127.  
  128. 2) Installing to a network version of Windows can cause problems if the
  129. user does not have write privileges to some of the Windows directories.
  130. The Kudo installer may need to add some DLL's to your current windows\system
  131. directory.  This directory will often be on a networked drive that is read-
  132. only when you are running a network version of Windows.  You will get messages
  133. to the effect of "Can't write to file ... due to read-only protection...", etc.
  134. This indicates that you will need to have the network supervisor run the
  135. installation in supervisor mode to obtain proper write access to the 
  136. necessary directories.
