OCR: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Reagan, Ronald Ronald Reagan Before he became a Republican politician, Ronald Reagan was a film actor, union leader, and spokesman for the General Electric Company. Regarded by many as a brilliant communicator, in the 1984 election he attracted more electoral votes than any previous U.S. president. As president, Reagan fought for low taxation, reduced public expenditure (except on the military), deregulation, and more power for the states. The U.S. enjoyed great prosperity during his presidency, at the cost of a massively increased budget deficit. His policy of fostering peace with the Soviet Union from a position of military strength, together with a strong stance on Mideast-inspired terrorism, had the intended impact overseas and on the U.S. electorate. Ronald Reagan, In 1987 Reagan's reputation was dented by the U.S. actor and politician, revelation that the White House had sanctioned 1911 - arms sales to Iran in contravention of domestic law. Reagan's plea of ignorance LLLL EX suggested that he had failed to observe the presidential oath to ensure that "the law be faithfully executed." CHRONOLOGY
