With his groundbreaking reinvention of blues, gospel, and rock-and- roll, the former truck driver from Memphis went on to become one of the biggest-selling stars this century. The only child from a poor family, Elvis initially sang country ballads, but discovered the style that made him famous while "fooling around" in the studio. With his brooding good looks and overtly sexual delivery he dominated the charts throughout the 1950s, recording hits such as "Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel." But by the mid-1960s he was considered a "has-been," diverted by manager Colonel Tom Parker into making forgettable, low-budget movies.
