OCR: HAVING PROBLEMS? provides an overview of the kinds of problems you may encounter: display, video and animation, sound, memory, printing, and Internet connection. It also includes advice on how to care for your CD-ROM. If you do not find the solution to your problem here, try consulting the Read Me file on the Chronicle of the 20th Century CD-ROM. Chronicle of the 20th Century is a Microsoft@ Windows@ program. This means that the program runs in a window, and you can use Microsoft Windows management techniques to arrange the udow on your screen. The only exception is that the Chronicle of the 20th Century window cannot be resized. Extra information about the use of Microsoft Windows can be found in your Microsoft Windows documentation and Windows online help. DISPLAY PROBLEMS COLOR AND RESOLUTION SETTINGS Chronicle of the 20th Century looks best in 256 color mode. If your computer has been configured to run with fewer than 256 colors, the image is de graded and performance may also be affected. Using more than 256 colors will affect the display of certain graphics in Chronicle of the 20th Century. In a few cases, however, using more than 256 colors affects the speed and smoothness of the video. If this happens, revert to the 256 mode. Chronicle of the 20th Century has been designed for display at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. All screen images completely fill the screen at this resolution. At a higher resolution (such as 1,024 x 768 pixels ), images are smaller - it is not possible to maximize the product to fill the screen. To check or change your current display settings, Windows 3.1 / 3. 11 users must run the "Windows Setup" program in the "Main" program group. Windows 95 users can do this by choosing "Settings" from the "Start" memu, then selecting "Control Panel." Double-click the "Display" icon, then click the "Settings" tab. More information can be found in your Microsoft Windows documentation and online help. CUT-OFF SCREEN Windows 95 users may find that some of the Chronicle of the 20th Century screen is cut off at the top, so that not all of the screen is visible. This problem is caused by the Task Bar. To fix it, select the top edge of the Task Barwith the left mouse button and drag it down and out of sight before running Chronicle of the 20th Century. Alternatively, right-click any empty area of the Task Bar, then left-click "Properties" and turn on the "Auto Hide" option. VIDEO AND ANIMATION PROBLEMS When you set up Chronicle of the 20th Century, special software that controls the video and animation sequences is installed onto your computer. For this "driver" software to work, you nuist restart Windows after installation. If you do not restart Windows, an error message is displayed when you try to play video or animations. You must restart Windows before attempting to run Chronicle of the 20th Century again. JUMPY ANIMATION OR VIDEO If video or animation sequences are jumpy, your computer may be using old versions of drivers installed in your system. For the new drivers to have taken effect, you should have restarted Windows after installing Chronicle of the 20th Century. If you have not do ne this, restart Windows now. If you use the magnifier to play video at full-screen size, you may find the result very jerky. To revert to the standard size, click anywhere on the screen. Jerky video or animation may also be the result of too little system memory. Refer to the Memory Problems section below for so me so lutions . The quality of videos in Chronicle of the 20th Century can be enhanced by setting your display to use more than 256 colors, if your computer has this capability. There is a possibility that this may affect the speed and smoothness of the video. If this happens, revert to the 256 mode. SOUND PROBLEMS NO SOUND If you cannot hear any sounds at all, make sure that: 1. The speaker is hooked up to the jack on your sound card, and not hooked up directly to the CD-ROM drive. 2. The volume is set to an audible level. The volume may be set with hardware, software, or both. Check your sound card do cumentation for de tails. 3. During Setup, special system software is installed, and Windows must be restarted afterward to make this software work. If you did not restart Windows after installation, do so before attempting to run Chronicle of the 20th Century again. INTERRUPTED SOUND If the sounds in Chronicle of the 20th Century are interrupted, it may need more memory. Refer to the section below entitled Memory Problems. DISTORTED SOUND A number of factors can cause fuzzy or distorted sounds. Low quality speakers, speakers set to high or maximum volume, or speakers powered by batteries that are failing, all cause problems. You should also be aware that some speakers are not capable of playing low frequency sounds properly. Some sound cards have software that allows you to adjust both the volume and tone of the sound. If this is the case with your sound card, start with the tone controls set in the mid position and your vo lime level set between 80 and 100 percent. This should give a clear signal with no distortion. Check your sound card mamal for the optimum settings. MEMORY PROBLEMS Chronicle of the 20th Century needs a minimum of 8Mb of RAM for Windows 3.1 / 3.11 users, and 12Mb is recommended for Windows 95 users. Even with the required amount of memory other factors may cause Chronicle of the 20th Century to run slowly or produce out-of-me mory errors . In such cases, the following may help to improve perfor ice 1. Shut down any other programs you are running. 2. Make sure that you have a Windows swap file, or that your Windows swap file is large enough (at least 16,384Kb). For mom information, consult the Read Me file provided with Chronicle of the 20th Century, or look in your Windows documentation. 3. Run a defragmentation program to speed up your hard disk. 4. Try reducing your color mode setting - but do not select less than 256 colors. 5. Check your CD-ROM drive documentation to make sure that it is at least double-speed and is MPC2-compatible. If the program is still running slower than you would like, you can improve its performance by turning off sounds and transitions. To do this, click on the "Navigator" icon in the top left comer of the screen, select "Options" from the Navigator and uncheck the relevant boxes PRINTING PROBLEMS If there is a problem with your printer setup, you can access these settings from Chronicle of the 20th Century through "Options." Click the "Navigator" icon in the top left comer of the screen, click the "Print/Copy" button, select "Print," then click "Printer Setup" to open the dialog box. Printing screens from Chronicle of the 20th Century may take several minutes, depending on the type of printer you use. Since screen resolution and printer resolution are often different, the printout may not match the quality you see on the screen. Because the pictures can be quite large, you may have difficulty copying or printing in low-memory conditions. In this ca refer to the Memory Problems section above. CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET If you are able to connect to the Internet from your computer, and if you have a Web browser installed, then you can take advantage of a feature of Chronicle of the 20th Century called Chronicle Online. Chronicle Online lets you access Chronicle of the 20th Century Web pages on the Internet. If you do not have Internet access, or a Web browser, then you are not able to make use of this feature. Warning: If you are already connected to Chronicle Online and try to connect again, then a second, concurrent Internet session is started. Each subsequent attempt to connect to Chronicle Online starts another Internet session - this is a feature of browsers. Running multiple sessions in this way may cause your computer to run out of memory and may result in your computer crashing. Therefore, we recommend that you run only one online session at a time. CONNECTING TO CHRONICLE ONLINE 1. Click the "Navigator" icon in the top left comer of the screen, then click the "Chronicle Online" icon (a telephone). If an installed Web browser is detected on your machine a dialog box appears with the following message: You need to have a Web browser installed to connect to the Internet. Your default Web browser is [name of default Web browser]. Do you want to use this? 2. If you select "Yes" then you should automatically be connected to the Chronicle Online Web pages. Your Web browser name is stored so that subsequent connections to Chronicle Online lappen automatically. If you select "No," or if an installed Web browser was not detected on your machine, a dialog box appears with the following message: To use the Online feature in this title, you need to have a Web browser installed on your computer. If you do have a browser, click "Locate" to find it. Otherwise, click "Cancel" and install a browser first. See "Connecting to the Internet" in the Read Me file for more information on locating and using your Web browser. ONLINE SETUP If you did not select a specific browser when installing Chronicle of the 20th Century, or you wish to change your browser, ou can do either by using "Online Setup,"which is located in "Options." Click the "Navigator" icon in the top left comer of the screen, then click the "Options" button to access "Online Setup." Follow the onscreen instructions to locate and use your Web browser. Refer to the Read Me file for further information. If your connection is not successful, check the following: a) That you can connect to the Internet and use your browser in the normal way. If you cannot do this, then there is a problem with your Internet connection. For example, make sure that your modem is correctly connected and switched on. b) Try starting your Internet connection and Web browser first, and then start up Chronicle of the 20th Century and try Chronicle Online. If you select the wrong .exe, or decide that you would rather use a different browser from the one you selected, you can select a different browser .exe by going to "Online Setup." in "Options." SPEED ON THE INTERNET We have set Chronicle Online up so that it quickly downlo ads to your computer. However, when the Internet gets busy, it slows down. You can often get round this by quitting your browser and trying again later. CARE OF COMPACT DISCS Contrary to early reports, compact discs (CDs) are very easily damaged if treated carelessly. Such damage has a much greater effect on the digital data of a CD-ROM than on the information of a music CD. A dirty or damaged CD-ROM is very likely to malfunction. With CD-ROM drives becoming faster and more disc-sensitive, this is an increasing problem. The surface of the disc can quickly gather dirt and is very easily scratched. To protect the data from scratches, fingerprints, dust particles, and smears, do not touch the readout side (unlabeled side) of the disc or place it face down on a hard surface. Should the CD become dirty, clean it with a soft cloth lightly mo iste ned with CD cleaning fluid or ethyl alcohol, working from the center to the edge. Do not use any type of solvent, such as benzine, lacquer thinner, anti-static agents, or vinyl record cleaners as they may damage the surface. Never leave the disc in a place subject to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or high humidity. Recommended storage conditions are: Temperature: 10℃ to 50℃ (50'F to 122'F) Humidity: 10 percent to 80 percent.
