OCR: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Kennedy, John F John F. Kennedy The 1963 assassination of the youngest president ever of the United States - and the country's first Catholic president - seared itself into the memory of everyone capable of understanding the enormity of the event. Born into a large, wealthy, Irish Boston family, JFK graduated from Harvard then joined the navy in 1941. Between 1946 and 1959 he served two terms as a Democrat in the House of Representatives, and two as a senator for the state of Massachusetts. His three years as president (1960-63) sounded a new note of energy, optimism, and emphasis on public service - manifested in Kennedy's commitment to a U.S. moon landing and his founding of the Peace Corps in 1961. Congress was less entranced than the public with John F. Kennedy, his domestic agenda: it was not until a year after U.S. politician, his death that it passed his priority tax reforms 1917-63 and civil rights legislation. Kennedy's capacity for leadership and coolness in crisis were LLLL LLLL demonstrated in his dealings with the U.S.S.R. - most notably over the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. CHRONOLOGY
