OCR: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Gandhi, Indira Indira Gandhi Indira Gandhi was a member of a dynasty that dominated Indian politics from 1947 onward, providing three prime ministers: her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, herself, and her son, Rajiv Gandhi. Educated at Bengal and Oxford universities, Indira Gandhi was involved in politics from an early age - and within two years of her father's death was in office herself. Her premiership was marked by success on the international front: intervention in the Pakistan civil war of 1971 brought her prestige, and her policy of nonalignment made her leader of the developing nations. But in 1975, economic difficulties and her conviction on the grounds of corrupt electoral practices led to her declaration of a state of emergency. Indira Gandhi, Indian In 1977 she lost power, but returned politician, 1917-84 two years later to face a growing tide of sectarian violence of which she too was a victim.
