OCR: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Eisenhower, Dwight D Dwight D. Eisenhower When Eisenhower ran for president in 1952, he used the slogan "I like Ike," a phrase that neatly summed up his appeal. A popular and successful military leader in World War II, he was viewed as an unbeatable presidential candidate by the Republican party. Born in Texas and raised in Kansas, Eisenhower's career was transformed by World War II, during which his tact and diplomacy won him first the job of U.S. Commander in Europe, then that of Supreme Allied Commander for the D-Day invasion of France. After the war he became military commander of NATO. Eisenhower's presidency was known as "the businessman's administration." Following a strong anti-Communist line in foreign affairs, at Dwight D. Eisenhower, U.S. soldier home he endorsed Senator Joseph Mccarthy's and statesman, 1890-1969 anti-Communist witch-hunts. Nevertheless, he helped to bring the Korean War to an end (1953); and despite the embarrassment of the LLLL U2 spy-plane incident, which wrecked the LLL 1960 U.S .- U.S.S.R. summit meeting, he never lost his popular appeal.
