JULY 26, 1953 Takes part in attack on two army barracks near Santiago de Cuba, for which he receives prison sentence. JANUARY 16, 1959 Ousts President Batista and establishes new government. APRIL 1961 Defeats CIA-backed invasion at Bay of Pigs. OCTOBER 1962 Mobilizes Cuban forces in the Soviet-missile crisis. 1963 Awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. MAY 1, 1976 Reorganizes the new constitution and proclaims himself president of the Republic of Cuba. OCTOBER 12, 1979 Makes a speech at the United Nations, attacking "imperialist" U.S. foreign policy and demanding aid for the Third World. 1994 Negotiates with the U.S. over policy of expelling political opponents and "undesirables."
