- Introduction
-
- This guide is designed to help you get Backup Exec for NetWare up and running
- as quickly as possible. It is intended for administrators familiar with
- installing NLMs on NetWare 3.x and 4.x fileservers.
-
- Installation Overview
-
- Backup Exec's installation is a five-step process:
-
- 1. Installation of Backup Exec on the backup server. During installation,
- files required for workstation client and agent installation are also
- copied to the backup server.
-
- 2. Upgrading other NetWare fileservers that are to have backup and restore
- operations performed on them with Backup Exec (applies only to
- Enterprise Edition).
-
- 3. (Optional) Modifying the AUTOEXEC.NCF file with the addition of the
- BESTART.NCF file. (The BESTART.NCF file loads the Job Manager and the
- resources it requires.)
-
- 4. Installation of the tape hardware (controller and tape drive) in the
- backup server.
-
- 5. Rebooting the server.
-
- Before you proceed with the installation, please make sure that your server
- and workstations meet Backup Exec's minimum system requirements and take a
- moment to read the pre-installation notes included in this guide.
-
-
- Installation Requirements
-
- Servers and workstations on your network must meet the following requirements
- to run the Backup Exec Job Manager, clients and agents.
-
- Module Requirements
-
- Job Manager and NetWare client * NetWare version 3.1x or 4.x
- 386 processor with at least 2 MB of
- RAM over the server's normal
- operating requirements.
- * Compatible tape device and
- controller. (A compatibility
- listing can be found in the
- HARDWARE.DOC located in the directory
- where you extracted the Backup Exec
- installation files.)
-
- Windows client and agent * Microsoft Windows version 3.1
- running in enhanced mode or Windows
- for Workgroups version 3.11
-
- DOS client and agent * MS-DOS version 3.31 or later
- Novell DOS version 6.0 or 7.0
-
- OS/2 client and agent * OS/2 version 1.3 (agent only), and
- (Enterprise Edition only) versions 2.0 or 2.1(client and agent)
-
- Windows NT agent * Windows NT version 3.1
- (Enterprise Edition only) * Windows NT Server version 3.1
-
- UNIX agent * SCO UNIX 3.2.4, Interactive 3.2,
- (Enterprise Edition only) Sun OS 4.1.3, UnixWare 1.0, ISC 4.2
-
- Macintosh agent * Macintosh System 7.x
- (Enterprise Edition only)
-
-
- Pre-Installation Notes
-
- For a trouble-free installation, please take a moment to read the following
- notes.
-
- Make sure your controller and tape device are listed in Backup Exec's
- compatibility matrix (refer to the HARDWARE.DOC file located in the directory
- where you extracted the Backup Exec installation files).
-
- Check to see that the tape drive is properly connected, and be sure the SCSI
- bus is addressed and terminated properly.
-
- If you are using an ASPI-compatible controller, verify with the controller's
- manufacturer that you are loading the latest drivers
- (e.g., AHA1540.DSK, etc.).
-
-
- Backup Exec Installation
-
- 1. From the directory where you extracted the Backup Exec installation
- files, type: load [volume]:[directory]\beinstl (e.g., load
- sys1:\install\beinstl). Please take a moment to read the README file.
- This document contains the latest release information about Backup Exec.
-
- During installation, Backup Exec checks the versions of some of the
- server's NetWare system files (NLMs). Outdated versions of these files
- can be updated during the installation procedure. Updating these files
- is recommended.
-
- 2. After all the files are installed, the next step is to upgrade other
- servers targeted for backup and restore operations (applies only to
- Enterprise Edition).
-
- 3. Next, update the AUTOEXEC.NCF file to remove any lines associated with
- the outdated files listed in the following table.
-
- Outdated NLM System Files
-
- tsa_311.nlm patch311.nlm
- tsa_400.nlm smdr311.nlm
- clibp002.nlm tsa_nds.nlm
- tsa_dos.nlm tsa_os2.nlm
- ws_man.nlm
-
- 4. Add the BESTART command as the last line in your backup server's
- AUTOEXEC.NCF file if you want to have Backup Exec's Job Manager loaded
- upon server startup. This step is optional. BESTART.NCF is a file
- that contains commands used to load the Backup Exec Job Manager.
-
- Note: If you are using Backup Exec for NetWare - Enterprise Edition,
- BESTART.NCF files are also installed on remote servers. These files load
- the necessary TSAs to allow the backup server to see the remote servers.
- Make sure none of the outdated files listed in the previous table are
- included in the AUTOEXEC.NCF file on remote servers. Adding the BESTART
- command to AUTOEXEC.NCF files on remote servers is recommended.
-
- 5. Install the tape device and controller in the backup server (if it is
- not already installed).
-
- 6. Reboot the backup server and all updated remote servers.
-
- 7. After the servers are rebooted, continue with the workstation agent and
- client installation or simply load the NetWare client to submit your
- first backup. To load the NetWare client, type load be at the system ":"
- prompt.
-
-
- Installing Workstation Agents and Clients
-
- Once the backup server is up and running, you can proceed with installing
- workstation agents and clients.

-
- Upgrading From Earlier Versions of Backup Exec
-
- If you are upgrading from Backup Exec version 4.x, make sure that you fully
- install all of the components of this version of Backup Exec. The Job
- Manager, client and agent modules from Backup Exec version 4.x cannot be
- used with this version of Backup Exec.
-
- To upgrade from a previous version of Backup Exec for NetWare:
-
- 1. Install this version of Backup Exec for NetWare. Make sure you down
- and restart your server after the files are installed.
-
- 2. After the server finishes booting, load the job manager (type: BESTART)
- if it is not already running. This creates a new job queue (if one
- has not yet been created).
-
- 3. Run the upgrade program by typing: LOAD BEUPGRAD. The upgrade program
- copies jobs from the old job queue to the new one. It also modifies
- any jobs that have old agents listed to reference the new agents.
-
- 4. Upgrade workstations running Backup Exec agents from a previous
- version. When upgrading these agents, you will probably want to keep the
- previous agent names and passwords. If you change either the name or
- the password on an agent, any jobs in the updated queue that reference
- that agent will have to be deleted and re-submitted.
