  1.                      HyperText VSUM X9501 READ_ME.1ST

  3.      With the June, 1991 release, the Virus Information Summary List
  4. was converted from its original ASCII list format into a custom,
  5. hypertext database format.  With the new format, the product name was
  6. been changed to HyperText VSUM.  The previous ASCII list product has 
  7. been discontinued, and will no longer be updated.  
  8.  
  9.      The December 1992 release of HyperText VSUM includes a new
  10. version of the driver program, VSUM.EXE, and the database file name has
  11. changed from VSUMX.H! to VSUMX.XDB.  Be sure to delete any old VSUMX.H!
  12. files after you install this HyperText VSUM version as the old hypertext
  13. database .H! files are not compatible with the new driver program.

  15.      Why the change to a hypertext database?  The original ASCII format
  16. had become extremely large and unwieldy, it was difficult for most
  17. people to effectively use.  Printing also had become a problem unless one
  18. had a very high speed laser printer.  More importantly, the information
  19. presented in the ASCII version was never really intended to be read
  20. sequentially as a book, but instead to be a reference book or 
  21. encyclopedia.

  23.      The hypertext database version, HyperText VSUM, solves 
  24. these problems.  There is no longer a need to print out the entire 
  25. document in order to be able to quickly locate a virus entry.  Individual
  26. virus entries, once selected by the user, can be printed by pressing
  27. F4.  HyperText VSUM also supports direct links between related
  28. viruses and their individual virus entries.  The Common Name Cross 
  29. Reference from the ASCII version has been linked to allow direct access to
  30. the virus entries by the common names.  Four additional cross references
  31. were initially added in the Appendices section: Length Cross-Reference and
  32. Origin Cross-Reference on the Appendices menu, as well as Boot Sector
  33. Infectors and Stealth & Sub-Stealth Viruses via the Viral Type
  34. Cross-Reference selection on the Appendices menu.  Additional cross-
  35. references have been added as well, also located on the Appendices menu.
  36. Virus entry format information can be found on the Appendices menu under
  37. the selection "Virus Entry Fields".

  39.      HyperText VSUM is easy to use.  Unzip your distribution file into
  40. a directory on your hard disk, using PKUnZip version 1.10.  Once unzipped,
  41. type VSUM at the system prompt and press enter.  The logo screen for
  42. HyperText VSUM will be displayed.  Press any key or the right mouse button
  43. to go to the Main Menu.  Pressing F1 will then present display of keyboard
  44. commands which are used within the program.  Individual entries or
  45. pages in HyperText VSUM can be printed on device PRN by pressing F5 while
  46. displaying the page or entry.

  48.      You can change the default printing device within HyperText VSUM
  49. from the Configuration Menu (press ALT+C once you are in HyperText VSUM).
  50. The display colors used by HyperText VSUM can be altered from this same
  51. configuration menu.  Any change to the default configuration will result
  52. in a XVIEW.INI file being created in your current directory.  It is highly
  53. suggested that users backup the VSUM.EXE program on a diskette and write-
  54. protect it.  If you should become infected, it ensures a clean copy to 
  55. recover from.

  57.      Users of HyperText VSUM with monochrome systems may need to alter
  58. the configuration of HyperText VSUM in order to be able to properly view
  59. the displays.  In order to force the system to black and white mode, enter
  60. the following seven keystrokes from the main menu:

  64.            Down Arrow
  65.            Down Arrow
  66.            Enter
  67.            ALT-C 
  68.            S
  69.  
  70.      If you are a user of any of the programs in the Central Point Anti-
  71. Virus Product Line, the Microsoft Anti-Virus program, or any heuristic
  72. scanning program, please be sure to read the "A word from Patricia..."
  73. section in HyperText VSUM regarding possible false positive detections 
  74. which may occur on the VALIDATE program included in this archive.

  76.      The McAfee Associates' public domain VALIDATE program and its 
  77. documentation has been included with the VSUMX distribution file,
  78. VSUMX501.ZIP.  The Validate values for the VSUM engine and the VSUMX
  79. database are:

  88. do not match the above, do not execute it as the program or database has
  89. been altered.

  92. feature of PKZip Version 1.10.  When you unzip this version, the following
  93. verification information should be displayed:
