  28. "MEAT OUT" DAY PUSHED IN SCHOOLS
  29.  
  30.      In an EarthDay "Meat-Out" campaign, school children attending
  31. Minneapolis Public Schools will be offered only vegetarian choices in
  32. the hot lunch program.  Accompanying the monthly menu is an article by
  33. Suzannah Self, a student dietitian from the University of Minnesota, who
  34. is interning at the Minneapolis Nutrition Center.  This article which
  35. will be read by all children in the school system has several inaccurate
  36. statements about the benefits and costs of a vegetarian diet.

  38.      "The production of meat takes a toll on our environment.  One acre
  39. of land yields almost 250 pounds of beef or 40,000 potatoes."  There is
  40. no mention of the fact that a potato provides an incomplete protein, or
  41. that to get adequate nutation from a "meatless " diet, a person would
  42. have to eat large quantities of vegetables as well as add vitamins, iron
  43. and some other minerals.  According to a well-written article by Claude
  44. Skatole in the Jan/Feb issue of The People's Agenda, "There is not
  45. enough land in the world, which will grow crops edible by humans, to
  46. feed ... the approximate present world population."

  48.      Quoting John Robbins' book, Diet For A New America, the student
  49. dietitian writes, "It takes almost 2,500 gallons of water to produce one
  50. pound of beef."  However in "Current Issues in Food Production: A
  51. Perspective On Beef As A Component In Diets For Americans, which is a
  52. scientific response to the Robbins' book, internationally recognized
  53. water and waste management engineer, Dr. John Sweeten of Texas A&M
  54. University, says drinking water use by cattle averages about two to
  55. thirteen gallons to produce a single pound of meat.

  57.      The National Cattlemen's Association issued a press release as a
  58. response to the various "Meat Out" activities.  "We respect the rights
  59. of all people to express their opinions.  However, we believe the right
  60. of free speech carries with it obligations of accuracy and
  61. responsibility.  The premise for the "Meatout" is ill-founded and
  62. illogical.  Nutrition experts have long recognized the important
  63. contributions which meat can make to the diet.  To imply otherwise is
  64. misleading and a serious disservice to the consuming public."

  71.      The Sixth Annual Wise Use Leadership Conference will be held July
  72. 15, 16 and 17, 1994, at John Ascuaga's Nugget in Reno, Nevada.

  75. skills, including organization management and drafting legislation and
  76. a celebration of our friends who are featured in William Perry Pendley's

  85. ARIZONA LEGISLATURE MAY PASS DAMAGE PREVENTION BILL
  86.  
  87.      A push by an animal rights group may defeat Arizona Senate Bill 
  88. #SB-1505.  The bill would create an eleven member board of ranching,
  89. agricultural, and hunting interests to formulate wildlife damage
  90. policies on public lands.  The policies and rules would include
  91. preventing and controlling damage on livestock producers caused by
  92. predatory animals and other vertebrate pests, including threatened and
  93. endangered species.

  95.      The bill also spells out how a rancher may respond after livestock
  96. is attacked or killed by bears or mountain lions.  Since leg hold traps
  97. are specified as acceptable means to prevent further damage from the
  98. offending predator, the group, H.A.L.T., (Help Abolish Leghold Traps,)
  99. has started a campaign to derail the legislation.

  107. COMMITTEE MEETS TO REVIEW DATA

  109.      There will be a meeting of the International Whaling Commission
  110. Interagency Committee on march 10, 1994, at 2:00 pm in room 6009 of the
  111. Herbert C. Hoover Building of the Commerce Department in Washington D.C.
  112. The purpose of the meeting is to review the results of the IWC
  113. intersessional meeting on the Antarctic Sanctuary (February 20-24,
  114. Norfolk Island, Australia), to consider the comments received on the
  115. peer review of the Revised Management Procedure, and to look ahead to
  116. the Annual Meeting.

  118.      They are also planning to have one more meeting of the Interagency
  119. Committee before the 1994 Annual Meeting of the IWC.  This is still
  120. tentatively scheduled for April 21 at 2:00 pm in room 6009.  Contact
