Over the years I have watched a number of hobbies either grow or die
at the whim of various governmental dictates. One that has grown and
that continues to show promise is Amateur Radio. My monitoring of this
hobby continues to this day although I have long since let my license
lapse. I was first licensed in January of 1959 so I have watched it
weather attacks.
My conclusion on why some hobbies are killed by govt intervention
while others prosper is that the hobbies that prosper have good public
relations. Amateur Radio is, in many respects, analogous to Computer
Communications. Amateur Radio is strictly non-commercial, and offers
public service during natural disasters and other regional emergency
conditions. Their PR is orchestrated primarily (in the US) by the
American Radio Relay League.
In order to defend Amateur Computer Communications against
governmental regulation such as we see happening in every legislature
in the country and in the US Congress right now, we need to
re-organize! We need to maintain a high public profile that is linked
to public service. State and Regional PR groups need to form. Projects
need to be put in place to add communications of a public service
nature and an emergency nature.
I can think of many projects that satisfy these requirements. One that
is fairly easy to implement will soon be implemented here in the
Olympia area. It will allow netmail (routed or direct) to be sent from
any node to a central location in Olympia where it will be converted
to a fax and sent to a phone number that is placed after the word FAX
on the "Subject:" line of the netmail. This allows anyone in the area
with access to netmail to be able to send faxes to any of our
government folks. An added banner would provide "advertising" of the
system.
Software to fully integrate this includes:
BGFAX140.ZIP FAX140B.ZIP LOGECHO.ZIP FEX_100.ZIP NETMGR98.ZIP
A sample setup is included in FAXGATE.ZIP
All of which may be FREQed from here.
I am hoping to see this system set up in all State Capitol Nets and in
Washington, DC as well. EVERY local net could easily add this service,
expanding this public service throughout the nation.

Here is the setup info for FAXGATE including the config files and
batch files. It needs to be opened in the same directory as BGFAX
lives in. I set it up as:
C:\BBS\FAX\ as the directory where FAXEXPRT, NETMGR, and BGFAX live.
Subdirectories are:
C:\BBS\FAX\DOCS\
C:\BBS\FAX\FAX-IN\
C:\BBS\FAX\FAXOUT\
C:\BBS\FAX\HOLDAREA\
C:\BBS\FAX\NETMAIL\
The directory and subdirectory names need to be changed as needed in
all of the files. You also need to tell NETMGR in the FAX-IN.CFG file
where to find your regular *.MSG Netmail Directory. Change your node
number, etc as needed.
This system is designed to work with:
* BGFAX140.ZIP FAX Software
* FAX140B.ZIP Updated BGFAX executables
* LOGECHO.ZIP Utility for making log entries
FEX_100.ZIP *.MSG/Hudson/JAM/Squish==>FAX Conversion
* NETMGR98.ZIP Netmail utility
Files marked with a * are optional. BGFAX is used for converting the
text files into fax format and sending them, but QL2 could also be
used. LOGECHO provides additional log support. NETMGR is used by
FAXEXPRT for extracting messages from message bases. FAXEXPRT has
similar built-in capabilities that work but are slower.
Please note that some of the above programs are shareware and need to
be registered individually.
