  16.     This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Thursday
  17.     morning, March 16, Pacific Standard Time, to midnight 
  18.     Wednesday night, March 22, 1995, Pacific Standard Time.  We 
  19.     recorded 260 earthquakes of M1.0 or larger during the 7-day 
  20.     period covered.
  21.         It was indeed a quiet week.  The largest quake was a M3.3
  22.     very early Saturday morning in the Beaumont/Yucaipa area.  In that 
  23.     region, the San Andreas fault splits up into several strands. 
  24.     None of the strands are continuous at the Earth's surface, so the 
  25.     "active trace" of the San Andreas is not well-defined. This week's 
  26.     earthquake was located between the Banning strand and the Mission 
  27.     Creek strand.  Its focal mechanism shows oblique reverse motion 
  28.     on an east-striking fault, which means that the fault strikes 
  29.     east-west, and the block of rock on the north side moved up and to 
  30.     the east compared to the south side.  Although the quake was a few 
  31.     miles removed from both towns and could have been felt, we got no 
  32.     reports.
  33.         All other quakes were less than M3 in magnitude.
  34.         The table lists the quakes this week that were M2.0 or 
  35.     larger in the central part of the coverage area.  Times are local 
  36.     times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs to the Pacific 
  37.     Daylight Time or 8 hrs to the Pacific Standard Time listed.
