  16.     This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Thursday
  17.     morning, February 9, Pacific Standard Time, to midnight 
  18.     Wednesday night, February 15, 1995, Pacific Standard Time.  We 
  19.     recorded 263 earthquakes of M1.0 or larger during the 7-day period 
  20.     covered.
  21.         Just about the only excitement this week was caused by
  22.     the two "Valentine's Day earthquakes" on Tuesday night.  Both
  23.     were aftershocks of the Northridge earthquake, and both were close
  24.     to Granada Hills, although not at the same location.  The first
  25.     and largest was a M3.2 at 6:54 pm, and the second was a M2.7 at
  26.     12:40 the next morning.  There was initially some confusion with
  27.     the 6:54 pm quake, since our automatic location software failed
  28.     to locate it properly and, due to the poor location, failed to
  29.     notify the duty seismologist.  Also possibly because of the poor
  30.     location, the magnitude was underestimated at M2.9.  Other things 
  31.     besides quakes can affect our signals, including electronic problems, 
  32.     wind, and what we call "cultural noise" like traffic, etc.  Because 
  33.     of these problems, one percent or so of the quakes have problems in 
  34.     the automatic locator.  We are continually trying to improve the 
  35.     percentages, but it's something to watch for if you are a user of 
  36.     "finger quake@scec.gps.caltech.edu".  In the case of the Granada 
  37.     Hills quake, we had improved information going out within a half 
  38.     hour.
  39.         Procedures went much more smoothly with the 12:40 am quake,
  40.     although sometimes we wish folks would wait until 8 am to call about
  41.     quakes that tiny!
  42.         Speaking of tiny, we got one call about a M2.2 near Simi
  43.     Valley on Sunday night.  We don't know whether to believe it was
  44.     truly felt or just a coincidence that someone called at the right
  45.     time.
  46.         The table lists the quakes this week that were M2.0 or 
  47.     larger in the central part of the coverage area.  Times are local 
  48.     times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs to the Pacific 
  49.     Daylight Time or 8 hrs to the Pacific Standard Time listed.
