ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM
I. Topic Area
Making A Battery
II. Objective
A. Define parts of a battery
B. Build and test a simple battery
III. Science Process Skills
A. Observation
B. Estimation
C. Application
D. Predicting
E. Hypothesizing
IV. Materials
A. One bulb (flashlight type)
B. Two (2 inch insulated wire)
C. Two nails (one copper, one aluminum)
D. One glass
E. One cup of concentrated lemon juice
V. Key Questions
A. What is a battery?
B. What are the parts of a battery?
VI. Background Information
A. Scientifically speaking D-cells are not
batteries, although, they are often referred
to as such. Two or more cells must be connected
to make a battery. A battery is a source of
electricity. A circuit is the path electricity
travels from one terminal of a battery to the
other.
VII. Management
VIII. Procedure
A. Teacher introduces lesson by telling class they
will build and test a simple battery. A battery
is a source of electricity.
B. Explain that a battery must have two terminals
for electricity to travel to and from.
C. Draw an illustration on the board of the termi-
nals. Wires are used to transport electricity to
and from the terminals to the bulbs. Inside
the batteries are electrodes.
D. Distribute the materials to students.
E. Have students predict how they could build a
battery and make the bulb light. They should
use the illustration on the board prior
knowledge of circuits and the materials
to make their bulb light.
F. Now students will make the bulb light by
building a battery with the materials given.
Students will keep trying as teacher gives help
as needed until results are reached.
G. Discussion - group will share and discuss
results
H. Closure - review how terminals work
IX. Vocabulary
A. Battery
B. D-cell
X. Extensions and Connections
A. Compare the cost and projected life of regular
and rechargeable batteries of the same size.
Which is the better investment?
B. Have someone demonstrate the use of automobile
battery cables. In writing, explain their
purpose and how they operate.
