  21. This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Thursday
  22. morning, March 16, Pacific Standard Time, to midnight
  23. Wednesday night, March 22, 1995, Pacific Standard Time.  We
  24. recorded 260 earthquakes of M1.0 or larger during the 7-day
  25. period covered.
  26.         It was indeed a quiet week.  The largest quake was a M3.3
  27. very early Saturday morning in the Beaumont/Yucaipa area.  In that
  28. region, the San Andreas fault splits up into several strands.
  29. None of the strands are continuous at the Earth's surface, so the
  30. "active trace" of the San Andreas is not well-defined. This week's
  31. earthquake was located between the Banning strand and the Mission
  32. Creek strand.  Its focal mechanism shows oblique reverse motion
  33. on an east-striking fault, which means that the fault strikes
  34. east-west, and the block of rock on the north side moved up and to
  35. the east compared to the south side.  Although the quake was a few
  36. miles removed from both towns and could have been felt, we got no
  37. reports.
  38.         All other quakes were less than M3 in magnitude.
  39.         The table lists the quakes this week that were M2.0 or
  40. larger in the central part of the coverage area.  Times are local
  41. times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs to the Pacific
  42. Daylight Time or 8 hrs to the Pacific Standard Time listed.
