  7. This program is designed to assist in the conversion of full country
  8. names or old country abbreviations in the events Birth, Christening,
  9. Death, and Burial levels 3 and 4 field to new country abbreviations as
  10. outlined in the "PAF Documentation Guidlines, 1993 Edition" published
  11. by the Silicon Valley PAF Users Group.
  12.  
  13. This program will make changes to LEVEL 3 or 4 names in the BIRTH,
  14. CHRISTENING, DEATH, and BURIAL events only.  It has the capability to
  15. change from any name to any other name.
  16.  
  17. ABBRCOUN.EXE requires some initial research and input by the user.  Inputs
  18. are the NAME CODES rather than the names themselves.  This requires some
  19. investigation of your PAF data files prior to running ABBRCOUN.EXE.

  21. To get the NAME CODE for the name you wnat to change and the NAME CODE for
  22. the new name enter FR and select any record that has a blank name or place
  23. field.  The title field can also be used.
  24.  
  25. Locate an individual with some empty name fields.  Select the <EDIT> command.
  26. Enter the name you desire to change in the empty field.  Press <CRTL><N>
  27. and the NAME CODE will be displayed.  Write this code number down.  Then
  28. press <CRTL><N> again to return to the name.  Enter the NEW NAME in that
  29. field, exit the field, re-enter the field, press <CTRL><N> and read and
  30. log the NAME CODE for the NEW NAME.  Press <CTRL><N> to return back to the
  31. name.  Repeat this for all the names you wish to change.  End with a name
  32. in the field, delete the name, and then exit the record without saving the
  33. changes.

  35. Run ABBRCOUN.EXE.  Select level 3 or level 4 in which you want the names
  36. changed.  Enter the paired NAME CODES separated by a comma on each line as
  37. prompted. Only one pair of codes to a prompt.  Be sure to enter the NAME
  38. CODE to be changed first, the new NAME CODE second.  You may enter up to 5
  39. pairs.  If you have less than 5 then enter 0,0 in the next prompt.

  41. ABBRCOUN.EXE will make the changes in both the INDIV2.DAT name pointers and
  42. in the MARR2.DAT pointers for the new names.  The OLD NAMES still remain in
  43. the NAME2.DAT file.  The NEW NAMES will be added to the NAME2.DAT file if
  44. they did not already exist.  If desired, run NAMCLEAN after ABBRCOUN.EXE
  45. to remove any deleted names from your NAME2.DAT file.  ABBRCOUN.EXE will
  46. only change the names in the level you select in the BIRTH, CHRISTENING,
  47. DEATH, and BURIAL fields.  No other names are effected and no change is
  48. made by ABBRCOUN.EXE to your NAME2.DAT file.

  50. Do not run ABBRCOUN.EXE if your PAF data has been modified by FRCHK -f option
  51. or other program such as NAMCLEAN, or RECLAIM after you have located and
  52. logged your NAME CODES without locating the new NAME CODES that may have
  53. been changed.

  55. Always work with a BACKUP set of your PAF data files or have a current
  56. BACKUP available.

  58. ABBRCOUN.EXE is released as freeware.  The author holds no liability
  59. for any problems with your database as a result of running ABBRCOUN.TXT.
  60. Be sure you have a recent backup available in case of problems.
