  186.         IGI255 Version 3.5 is designed to read IGI text files created
  187.         with the Family Search Program at your local Family History
  188.         Center and allow them to be printed out using 55 single line
  189.         entries per page vs the FSP's 12-13.
  190.   
  191.         Completely menu driven, IGI255 will simply scan IGI text files
  192.         and create a separate database with the information it finds.
  193.         The database is then sorted, viewed, printed or copied as
  194.         desired.  No printer is required.  File contents may be sorted
  195.         and viewed on screen.  The database files may also be copied and
  196.         combined to another file in .DBF or ascii text form.
  197.   
  198.         Four pre-defined sorts are available or create up to 9 additional
  199.         at one time.  An excellent filtering option is also available.
  200.   
  201.         There is no formal charge for IGI255 Version 3.5 - the Church of
  202.         Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is generous enough to let us
  203.         all use their facilities, equipment & IGI data at no charge - may
  204.         this program begin to return the favor, and, I ask two favors:
  205.   
  206.              1)  The next time you walk into your local family
  207.                  history center, say "thanks" to the volunteers
  208.                  who are donating their time to help us all.
  209.   
  210.              2)  Send me a picture postcard from where you live.
  211.                  City, County, State, Region or Country, your choice.

  213.         If neither of these options is acceptable then pay for the
  214.         program.  Send me a check in the amount of $20.

  216.         IGI255, Version 3.5 is being released as Freeware, NOT public
  217.         domain or Shareware - this means, simply put, that I retain all
  218.         the rights to the program but anyone is more than welcome to use
  219.         it for their personal needs.  Anyone wishing to distribute the
  220.         program to others may do so and access a reasonable and normal
  221.         charge for disk media, mailer and postage.  Commercial computer
  222.         on-line services may allow appropriate distribution through the
  223.         normal course of their business.

  245.                          Family Search Program Downloads
  246.                          ───────────────────────────────
  247.   
  248.         The Family Search Program's IGI routine features various types of
  249.         searches and the ability to "filter" them.  Each search may also
  250.         be set for a "Similar" or an "Exact" surname search.  IGI255 will
  251.         process files created in any FSP search and/or filter combination.
  252.   
  253.         Naturally a text file consisting of information from both types
  254.         of searches would gather all available possibilities for a given
  255.         surname.  Unfortunately this creates an extremely large amount of
  256.         duplicate entries in the text file.  IGI255 cures this "problem"
  257.         rather easily by simply removing the duplicates, automatically.
  258.   
  259.         When downloading IGI information to be processed with IGI255,
  260.         there are a couple of items to remember:
  261.   
  262.         First, GEDCOM's produced by the FSP are handled by IGI255 but the
  263.         routine may be considered *slow*.  Experiment with small gedcom
  264.         downloads first.  See page 35 for additional information.  There
  265.         is also a shareware program by the name of GIPSI which process
  266.         gedcom files.  NOTE: The .DBF files created by GIPSI are NOT
  267.         compatible with IGI255.
  268.   
  269.         Secondly and most important, name your text files with an
  270.         extenstion - and - DO NOT use .COM, .EXE, .DBF, .SYS
  271.   
  272.                             OR WITH A 3rd LETTER OF X
  273.   
  274.                   filename.CPM is valid, filename.COM is NOT
  275.                   filename.NTY is valid, filename.NTX is NOT
  276.   
  277.         IGI255's file selection routine does NOT display any file that
  278.         has one of the above extensions.  Names such as .IGU, .IGE, .IGG
  279.         meaning the United States, England, and Germany are valid but
  280.         whatever naming convention (.TXT, .DOC, .IGI, etc.) suits your
  281.         needs is fine.
  282.   
  283.         Apparently the Family Search Program can be configured by each
  284.         individual Family History Center to produce "text" files in
  285.         various word processing formats.  IGI255 SHOULD be able to read
  286.         any of these text files created by any FSP.
  287.   
  288.         IGI255 was designed and tested using text files created by
  289.         version 2.xx and 3.xx of the Family Search Program. It scans the
  290.         text file for certain text strings in certain places so it is
  291.         possible that, depending on the configuration/installation of
  292.         your FHC's program, variances are possible.  If you have blank
  293.         lines or what appears to be information where it shouldn't be,
  294.         contact me at once and the appropriate modifications can be made.

  318.         IGI255 is designed for use on a hard drive but files can be
  319.         processed from a floppy drive - but is MUCH slower.  If at all
  320.         possible, use the hard drive.

  371.         To begin the program simply type IGI255 at the DOS prompt.
  372.   
  373.         The first time IGI255 is run, the paths for the IGI text files
  374.         will be set, and various files will be created.  IGI255.sys
  375.         stores the default information used by the program.  IGI255ST.sys
  376.         and IGI255ST.srt contain the "state" names and abbreviations.
  377.   
  378.         Please refer to "IGI255 Version 4.4 Feature Notes", page 37 for
  379.         important concerning the default locations.
  380.

  382.         Arrow Keys with a Twist
  383.         ───────────────────────
  384.   
  385.         IGI255 generally uses the RIGHT ARROW key as the ENTER key and
  386.         the LEFT ARROW key as the ESC key.  This feature can be disabled.
  387.         Please see "IGI255 Version 4.4 Feature Notes", page 34.

  390.         Deleting Unneeded Files
  391.         ───────────────────────
  392.   
  393.         If a "<DEL active>" is shown on the bottom of a screen, files on
  394.         that list can be deleted.  Press the DEL key once to bring up the
  395.         warning screen and press the DEL key a second time to actually
  396.         erase the file.  Any other key will cancel the request.
  397.   
  398.         The 'View/Print' file selection screen will show a small diamond
  399.         "tag" next to the sort description if that sort file exists for
  400.         that .DBF.  This sort file can be deleted by hi-liting the sort
  401.         name and pressing the DEL key.  A warning screen will then
  402.         appear.  Press the DEL key a second time to erase the sort file
  403.         or press any other key to cancel the request.

  406.         Quit to DOS - Stopping the Program
  407.         ──────────────────────────────────

  409.         Ending the program is as simple as pressing ESC while at the Main
  410.         Menu or hi-liting quit and pressing ENTER or the RIGHT ARROW key.
  411.         Return to the Main Menu from any point in the program by
  412.         continually pressing the ESC key.

  427.         Disk Space
  428.         ──────────
  429.   
  430.         Disk space is the only limiting factor for processing files.  Not
  431.         only is space needed for the IGI text file and the resulting .DBF
  432.         file but the size of each sort file must also be considered.
  433.   
  434.         For example, text files for the 8,000 plus HARRIS's in VA were
  435.         created by the Family Search Program.  These text files consume
  436.         over 3 meg of disk space and the resulting combined .DBF file is
  437.         about 1.5 meg.  Each sort created an index file ranging from 600K
  438.         to 900K - over a total of 6 megabytes of disk space was used.  Of
  439.         course once printing was completed each of the .DBF and sort
  440.         files could be deleted.
  441.   
  442.                       ALWAYS, REPEAT, ALWAYS KEEP A BACK-UP
  443.                          COPY OF YOUR ORIGINAL TEXT FILE
  444.   
  445.         If a "disk full" error occurs during the "indexing" (sorting)
  446.         process you will get a "retry" prompt at the top of the screen.
  447.         Press N to abort the program - there will probably be a temporary
  448.         work file in your root directory that needs to be deleted.  It
  449.         will generally have a strange looking name of all characters,
  450.         possibly digits, but will be unique enough that you will know it
  451.         doesn't belong and can be deleted.
  452.   
  453.   
  454.         Problems with "Snow"
  455.         ────────────────────
  456.   
  457.         IGI255 has been tested on AT and XT class machines with MONO,
  458.         CGA, EGA and VGA which have suffered no ill effects.  CGA
  459.         monitors are notorious for "snow" - to cure this problem, at the
  460.         DOS prompt before running the program, type:
  461.   
  462.                         SET CLIPPER=S1
  463.   
  464.         exactly as shown.  Assuming that there is "environment space"
  465.         available, this will cure the problem.  Once "set", this command
  466.         will remain in the computer's memory until the machine is reset
  467.         or turned off.  Place this command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so
  468.         that it doesn't have to be re-typed it each time the computer is
  469.         turned on or reset.

  471.         If your computer indicates an "out of environment space" error
  472.         when attempting to use this command, please refer to a DOS manual
  473.         for instructions to increase the environment's space.

  486.         Computer Incompatibility

  489.         Machine incompatibility is rare but occasionaly, it happens.
  490.   
  491.         If a "NOT ENOUGH MEMORY" error is detected when attempting
  492.         to run IGI255 - please refer to "DOS Won't Load", Page 38.
  493.   
  494.         Previous users, if problems are encountered after the program
  495.         begins, erase the file IGI255.SYS and rerun the program.  If
  496.         problems persist, contact me for a corrected version.
  497.   
  498.         Upgrades, Now and Then
  499.         ──────────────────────
  500.   
  501.         Every attempt is made to keep IGI255 a simple-to-use program for
  502.         general use while expanding the underlying features for those of
  503.         wanting to do extremely complex manipulations of IGI data.
  504.   
  505.         There are still some features that could be added to the program
  506.         and the flow of moving from one screen to another could be
  507.         improved.  At this time the next release date is unknown.
  508.   
  509.         "The suggestion box is hanging on the wall grinnin' like a
  510.         Cheshire Cat and a I'm hungry feed me gleam in it's eye..."
  511.   
  512.         All comments, good, bad or ugly, about IGI255 are welcomed.
  513.         Testing has been continuous but saturation at times tends to
  514.         overlook the obvious.  If you notice anything that needs fixing,
  515.         no matter how large or small, please let me know.  Please send

  524.         I do monitor both the National Genealogical and Gensoft Echos on
  525.         a daily basis and Compuserve weekly (72607,2064).  The best time
  526.         to telephone is weekends or any weekday evening.
  527.   
  528.         The flexibility of IGI255 can be a tremendous asset but please
  529.         remember that it can also can lead to confusion.  Even those
  530.         extremely familiar with the program have known to get lost not
  531.         knowing what's tagged, marked and/or copied to what .DBF - plan
  532.         ahead and go slow and steady...when in doubt, just untag
  533.         everything, unmarked everything and start over.
  534.   
  535.         In any case, I truly hope the program in some way helps you find
  536.         that missing link.

  552.         When IGI255 is begun, the first screen that to appear is the Main
  553.         Menu.  You must first 'Create' a .DBF file before you can 'View'
  554.         it but the options on the Main Menu are placed beginning with the
  555.         most frequently used.

  557.         Using the cursor keys (up, down, page up, page down, home, end),
  558.         hi-lite your choice and press ENTER or the RIGHT ARROW key.
  559.         Pressing ESC or choosing Quit will terminate IGI255 and return
  560.         you to the DOS prompt.

  618.         One of the IGI255's finest features is it's ability to print out
  619.         a .DBF in almost any possible configuration.  Another handy to
  620.         have feature is the program's ability to interrupt a large multi-
  621.         page print session and resume it at a later date.
  622.   
  623.         Naturally, normal print options such as such as lines per page,
  624.         margin, header lines and footer lines can be defined.
  625.   
  626.         In addition, the ability to print marked duplicate entries as
  627.         well as a character to hi-light tagged entries can be designated.
  628.         Along with the option to define which fields are to be printed as
  629.         well as the length of each field, a custom print-out can be
  630.         easily created.
  631.   
  632.         The printer configuration can be modified from two points while
  633.         running the program.  First, from the Main Menu.  Select the
  634.         Printer/Date Setup option and another small menu will appear.
  635.         This menu will lead to either the Printer Setup Menu or the Event
  636.         Date Menu.  Hi-lite "Printer" and press ENTER.  The Printer Setup
  637.         Menu will then appear.
  638.   
  639.         It is also possible to configure the printer by pressing F3 when
  640.         viewing a .DBF which will activate the Print Options Menu.  This
  641.         menu contains a option that leads directly to the Printer Setup
  642.         Menu.  Simply hi-lite the "Printer Setup" option and press ENTER.
  643.

  645.         Printer Set-up Menu
  646.   
  647.         The Printer Setup Menu consists of two screens.  The first is to
  648.         designate the printer's compressed code, lines per page, margin,
  649.         header and footer lines, whether or not duplicates are to be
  650.         printed, and the character to print if an entry is tagged.  Type
  651.         in the appropriate responses and press enter after each.
  652.   
  653.         The second screen is to define the length of each field that is
  654.         to be printed.  At either screen, pressing ESC will cancel any
  655.         changes and back up to the previous screen.

  667.                                 Compressed Code
  668.   
  669.         Specifically designed for the standard compressed mode of
  670.         printing (17 CPI), you must tell the program what CHR number to
  671.         use.  Usually 15, this code represents the CHR number to activate
  672.         the compressed mode of the printer.  Older model of Okidata
  673.         printers will use the number 29.
  674.   
  675.         If neither work then leave it blank and force the printer to the
  676.         compressed or condensed mode prior to printing.  If there are no
  677.         buttons on a control panel of the printer to do this then simply
  678.         run a word processor or a program which allows condensed
  679.         printing.  Print something to force the printer into the
  680.         condensed mode, exit, and re-try IGI255.
  681.   
  682.         In other words, in most cases, once the printer is in the
  683.         condensed mode it will stay that way until a program tells it
  684.         different or the printer is turned off.
  685.   
  686.                                  Lines Per Page
  687.   
  688.         Decide how many entries per page are to be printed and type in
  689.         that amount.  Generally, standard compressed print will allow 55-
  690.         60 entries per page.  If it is possible to "force" the printer
  691.         into different modes some interesting results can be obtained.

  694.         extremely small.  Another option is 20 CPI and 75-80 lines per
  695.         page which also produces smaller print.

  697.                                      Margin

  699.         The number typed in as a margin is the number of spaces that the
  700.         print out will be indented.  This can allow room to 3-hole punch
  701.         each page for insertion in a 3-ring binder.  Note, some printers
  702.         may require a decrease in the length of one or more fields in
  703.         order to prevent the print line wrapping around to the next line.

  705.                Header Line Characters and Bottom Line Characters
  706.   
  707.         By default, the third line of the header on each page consists of
  708.         a dash and two spaces.  This can be changed by entering the
  709.         character(s) desired.  For example, a simple solid dashed line is
  710.         created by typing in --- or even ~~~.  If the computer in use is
  711.         an AT class or higher machine and the printer supports graphic
  712.         characters, try holding down the ALT key and then pressing the
  713.         numbers 205 to get a double graphic line.  Some rather unique
  714.         lines can be created.  Refer to a standard ASCII chart for
  715.         additional characters.

  732.         marked for deletion, the Event Code is replaced with an * and
  733.         therefore if printed, they can be recognized rather easily.

  738.         A tagged entry can be "hi-lited" during printing.  That is, a
  739.         character will be printed in the margin to the left of the entry.
  740.         The designated Tag Character will be printed.  If no tag
  741.         character is desired, simply leave the Tag Character field blank.

  743.         This can possibly be a rather handy feature.  For example, a list
  744.         of entries has been tagged for a particular first name but the
  745.         entire list is printed in state order.  Using a period "." as a
  746.         tag character, each of the tagged entries in the .DBF will be
  747.         printed with the "." in the left margin.  The list can quickly be
  748.         scanned for the tagged lines.  ASCII characters can be generated
  749.         with an AT class (or better) computer and a graphics printer.

  752.         Customizing Field Lengths
  753.   
  754.         The second screen of the Printer Setup Menu specifies which
  755.         fields are to be printed and the length of each.  The order that
  756.         the fields will be printed can also be defined.

  759.                           Changing the Length of a Field
  760.   
  761.         Use the cursor keys to hi-lite the field to change and press
  762.         ENTER (or the RIGHT ARROW key).  Type in the number of spaces to
  763.         be printed for that field and the number of spaces to follow it
  764.         when it is printed.  Press ENTER to record the changes or ESC to
  765.         cancel them.  The entire line will again be hi-lighted and the
  766.         next field to be changed may be chosen.

  768.         For reference, the program default for that field is shown
  769.         immediately to the left of each and the maximum spaces for that
  770.         field is shown to the left of that.

  788.         Hi-lite the field to be moved and press M.  That line will begin
  789.         blinking.  Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to move it to the new
  790.         location and press ENTER.  The program will then adjust the
  791.         screen and show the new order of the fields.  Pressing ENTER is
  792.         the only means of leaving the "Move Mode".

  794.         Pressing R will reset the length and order of the fields to the
  795.         default values.

  797.                                Saving Field Changes

  799.         There are 3 options.  Hi-lite one and press ENTER.  The program
  800.         will then return to the Main Menu (or the Print Menu if activated
  801.         from there).  The first, Cancel will ignore any changes you may
  802.         have made.  The previously saved information will be used.
  803.         Pressing ESC will emulate selecting the Cancel option.

  805.         The second, "Use for now but don't save", will activate the
  806.         information shown but once you leave the program and return to
  807.         DOS these changes are lost.

  809.         The third, "Save these changes", will update the IGI255.sys file
  810.         with the new information.  The next time you use IGI255 these
  811.         same print field values will be in effect.

  814.         Printer/Date Setup - Event Dates
  815.         ────────────────────────────────

  817.         Event dates in the IGI text file at times contain verbiage such
  818.         as "Born 1866 (census)".  IGI255 will attempt to calculate the
  819.         proper year following a DD MMM YYYY format and use an event date
  820.         of "b.  1866" in the .DBF.  This assures a proper DATE sort based
  821.         on the year.  It would also be safe to assume that an entry with
  822.         the "b." had been reformatted by IGI255.
  823.   
  824.         The Family Search Program also produces event dates in DD MMM
  825.         YYYY left justified, such as:

  830.         IGI255 can "stuff" the dates with leading spaces.  This lends
  831.         consistency to the date sorts as well as the printed output.

  846.         IGI255 affords the opportunity to mix and match how the event
  847.         dates are handled.  That is, the program can be set leave the
  848.         event dates in their original form, attempt to "correct" or "re-
  849.         work" both situations, or a combination of the two.
  850.   
  851.         The first time IGI255 is run, the program is set to attempt to
  852.         correct both situations.  To change this default, select
  853.         Printer/Date Setup at the Main Menu.  When the Printer Setup menu
  854.         appears, select Event Dates.  An informative screen repeating the
  855.         information above will first appear.  Press a key.  The Event
  856.         Date selection menu will appear.  Hi-lite the new option desired
  857.         and press ENTER.  Each IGI text file processed from this point
  858.         will use the selected choice.  Select Cancel or press the ESC key
  859.         to leave the current choice in effect.
  860.   
  861.         A "Dt=Y - Vrb=Y" will appear center screen during the "Create a
  862.         .DBF" file selection process.  The Y's signify that dates will be
  863.         formatted and the verbiage will be corrected if possible.
  864.         Therefore the current options can be seen prior to processing.
  865.   
  866.         The Event Date selection menu can be activated from the scroll
  867.         screen by pressing F4.  The .DBF being viewed can be reformatted
  868.         immediately without having to return to the main menu.
  869.   
  870.         The only extraneous verbiage known at this time is "Born".  If
  871.         others are found please contact me so they corrections can be
  872.         in time for the next version.

  875.         State Abbreviations & Place Information
  876.         ───────────────────────────────────────
  877.   
  878.         The text files produced by the FSP do not utilize state
  879.         abbreviations but the expanded spelling instead.  Fortunately the
  880.         place information in the IGI text file is generally grouped by
  881.         commas but unfortunately the groupings aren't always consistent.
  882.         That is, the state or country for one entry may be in the third
  883.         group but in the next entry it may be in the 2nd group.
  884.   
  885.         IGI255 will attempt to determine each group, calculate the state
  886.         abbreviation beginning with the right-most group and work it's
  887.         way left.  If a match is not made in the right-most group, the
  888.         next to last group on the right will be searched and so on.
  889.   
  890.         The first time the program finds a valid state spelling, it will
  891.         assume that this is the state and go on to the next entry.
  892.   
  893.         It is possible that an entry may contain a "county" which happens
  894.         to be a valid state spelling but not a "state".  This is
  895.         generally due to excessive length of the place information in the
  896.         text file (see below).

  907.         The files IGI255ST.sys and IGI255ST.srt contain the information
  908.         used to determine the abbreviations and are automatically created
  909.         on start up if they don't already exist.  The complete index to
  910.         the Family Search Program Version 2.13 was used in compiling the
  911.         abbreviations used.  If future versions of the FSP change its
  912.         abbreviations, then IGI255 will possibly be out-of-date.
  913.   
  914.         The "States Abbreviation" option on the Main Menu will allow
  915.         custom state and place entries.  The F9 key at the "View/Print"
  916.         scroll screen will allow the .DBF being viewed to be "re-worked"
  917.         under this new format.
  918.   
  919.         Note:  Beginning with version 3.0, the fields which hold the
  920.         state abbreviation and place information were increased by one
  921.         space to 3 and 36 respectively.  Although this does not generally
  922.         effect entries for the U.S. and Canada, it does make a difference
  923.         when dealing with other countries because they utilize a 3 space
  924.         abbreviation.  If you simply re-work the abbreviations of an
  925.         OLDER .DBF via the F9 key, only the first two letters of the
  926.         abbreviation will be included and a sort on the "state" can be
  927.         confusing.  A .DBF created under the older format that contains
  928.         place information other than U.S. locations should be recreated
  929.         under the new format.
  930.   
  931.         Although it is recommended all .DBF's created with pre 3.0
  932.         versions of IGI255 be remade, re-format all the old 'U.S. only'
  933.         .DBF's using this F9 feature, do a sort by state, and then take a
  934.         look to see if they need to be recreated before actually doing
  935.         so.  It may be unnecessary.
  936.   
  937.         Just be aware that if NEW .DBF is ADDED TO AN OLD .DBF the OLD
  938.         format will be retained.  Again, if possible, recreate old .DBF's
  939.         and when combining old and new, COPY THE OLD TO THE NEW, not the
  940.         new to the old.
  941.   
  942.         The program retains the 1st 36 characters of each place info line
  943.         from the text file - which *appears* to be the maximum length
  944.         retained by the text file.  In some cases, the place information
  945.         in the text file is so long that the 2nd line ends abruptly
  946.         chopping off what would be the state, county or country.  If an
  947.         entry like this exists, attempt to utilize the State Abbreviation
  948.         Maintenance at the main menu and customize an entry for it.
  949.   
  950.         For example...there is a group of ILDERTON's with a combined
  951.         place location of "St. Nicholas Parish Rec and Nonconf.,
  952.         Newcastle Upon Tyne,".  The word Northumberland should follow but
  953.         doesn't due to the line's excessive length.  The solution in this
  954.         case was simple.

  968.         Tyne" as Name to Look For.  Returning to the Main Menu,
  969.         View/Print was selected.  The ILDERTON.dbf was chosen and "none"
  970.         as the sort.  When the scroll screen appeared, F9 was pressed and
  971.         "Yes" was chosen.  IGI255 re-formatted the state abbreviations
  972.         and this time when the long entry was reached, "Newcastle Upon
  973.         Tyne" (the right-most group) was found in IGI255ST.sys and "NBL"
  974.         was used as the abbreviation.

  976.         There may be cases where this won't work but with a just a little
  977.         extra effort, most, if not all, of your extra long place name
  978.         entries can be classified.

  981.         Text File Location (refer to 4.x supplements for changes)

  985.         program.  Set their location by selecting 'Text Files Location'

  1004.         Select "Modify Colors" at the Main Menu to change the appearance
  1005.         of the program's screens.  Once the color menu appears, hi-lite
  1006.         the screen to change and press enter.  Then use the arrow keys to
  1007.         select the desired color and press enter.  Once all color
  1008.         selections are made, hi-lite the save option and press enter.
  1009.         The new colors will be in effect.  If the color menu was reached
  1010.         in error, press ESC or hi-lite the "No Save" option and press
  1011.         enter.  The current colors in use will not be changed.

  1013.         Some of the message boxes are "hardwired" in a particular color.
  1014.         A commercial screen manipulator may not allow color changes and
  1015.         you won't necessarially see what you should.  If you feel that
  1016.         this is the case contact me for verification and a corrected

  1031.         The process to transform your FSP text file into a .DBF is
  1032.         simple.  Choose "Create .DBF from Text" at the Main Menu and
  1033.         press ENTER.  The next screen will have a list of files to
  1034.         process on the left, and .DBF files on the right.
  1035.   
  1036.         If no files are shown on the left, either the path is incorrect
  1037.         or there are simply no files in that location.  Press F5 to bring
  1038.         up the "Text File Location" request and enter a valid DOS path
  1039.         and file spec to the IGI text files.
  1040.   
  1041.         One the desired file(s) are listed on the left, use the arrow
  1042.         keys to hi-lite the name of the IGI text file for which a .DBF is
  1043.         desired and press ENTER (or the RIGHT ARROW key).

  1045.         The lite bar will now be on the right side of the screen.  Hi-
  1046.         lite the name of the .DBF to use and press ENTER (or the RIGHT
  1047.         ARROW key).  If an existing .DBF is selected, you will be

  1049.         cancel the operation.  Hi-lite your choice and press ENTER.

  1051.         Select <new> to create a new .DBF and type in a file name.  The
  1052.         name of the text file will appear as a default but another name
  1053.         may be used by simply typing over the existing one.  The .DBF
  1054.         extension will be provided automatically.  When the name is
  1055.         typed, press ENTER and processing will begin.  If a .DBF file
  1056.         exists for the name you type in, you will be prompted to either
  1057.         add this text file to it, overwrite it or cancel the operation.
  1058.         When the .DBF has been created you will return to the Main Menu.

  1060.         Pressing the LEFT ARROW key while on the left side of the screen
  1061.         (text file selection) will return you to the Main Menu.  Pressing
  1062.         the LEFT ARROW key while on the right side of the screen (.DBF

  1094.         Viewing a .DBF is as simple as first picking the file to see and
  1095.         then a sort for it.  A "scroll-screen" of entries for that .DBF
  1096.         will then appear.  From here other options such as printing and
  1097.         filtering can be invoked by pressing the appropriate function
  1098.         keys or key combinations.
  1099.   
  1100.         Hi-lite "View/Print .DBF" at the Main Menu and press ENTER (or
  1101.         the RIGHT ARROW key).  The next screen will list the available
  1102.         .DBF's on the left and fixed sorts on the right.  If no .DBF
  1103.         files have been created, a "No Files" message will appear.  A
  1104.         .DBF must first be created from an IGI text file.

  1106.         Hi-lite the .DBF to be viewed and press ENTER (or the RIGHT ARROW
  1107.         key).  The lite bar will move to the right side of the screen.
  1108.         Choose the appropriate sort and press ENTER (or the RIGHT ARROW
  1109.         key).  If the sort file does not exist it will then be
  1110.         automatically created.  A small diamond next to the sort
  1111.         description indicates that the sort file exists.

  1113.         Pressing the INS key while at either file selection list will
  1114.         activate the custom sort routine for that .DBF (see Custom
  1115.         Sorts).  Pressing the LEFT ARROW key while at the left side of
  1116.         the screen returns you to the main menu - while at the right side
  1117.         of the screen returns you to the .DBF file selection.
  1118.   
  1119.         Once the sort has been selected, the "scroll screen" will appear.
  1120.         This is a list of all the entries in the selected .DBF in the
  1121.         sort order requested.  Use the cursor keys (down, up, page up,
  1122.         page down, home, end) to scroll thru the names.

  1124.         The program was modified in the past to utilize 3 spaces for the
  1125.         State field rather than 2 and the place field was increased to
  1126.         35 - viewing an "old" .DBF will only hi-lite 2 spaces in the
  1127.         state field, a "new" one will hi-lite 3.  Refer to the discussion
  1128.         on State Abbreviations and Event Date manipulation for more
  1129.         information on their differences.

  1179.                   without having to be recreated.  Please refer to
  1180.                   the section 'Changing Program Defaults, State

  1223.         The .DBF file created will be a duplicate of the file being
  1224.         viewed unless of course you choose "Tagged Entries".  If a
  1225.         filtered .DBF is being viewed then copying 'All' entries to a new
  1226.         .DBF will only copy these filtered entries.  If "Tagged Entries"
  1227.         is chosen, then only the tagged entries will be copied.  NOTE: If
  1228.         the filter is on and "Tagged Entries" is chosen, ONLY those
  1229.         tagged entries IN THE FILTER will be copied.
  1230.   
  1231.         You will then be asked for a file name.  Type in the name you
  1232.         want and press enter.  The .DBF extension will be supplied
  1233.         automatically.  You will not be allowed to use the same file name
  1234.         that you are viewing.  If a file by the name that you entered
  1235.         already exists, you will be prompted to either overwrite it, add
  1236.         to it or cancel the operation.  If you press enter and the name
  1237.         request is all blanks, the operation will be canceled.
  1238.   
  1239.         After the file name request, you will then be asked if you want
  1240.         to copy the entire file being viewed or the tagged entries.  The
  1241.         copy routine will then begin.  See the section on filtering for
  1242.         additional information on using the print to .DBF option.

  1249.         The text file created will be of a fixed length format and the
  1250.         length of each field will match the printer output. Suggestions

  1266.         If the type of file selected is 'Text - Fixed', a file name
  1267.         prompt will appear.  The name of the file being viewed with an
  1268.         extension of .PRN is the default.  Name it something different by
  1269.         typing in a new name and pressing enter.  Note:  A file extension
  1270.         must be included if one is desired.  Previous versions of IGI255
  1271.         forced a .PRN extension to the text files but you now have the
  1272.         option of changing this.  If a file by the name that you entered
  1273.         already exists, you will be asked if you want to overwrite it,
  1274.         add to it or cancel the operation.  If you press enter and the
  1275.         name request is all blanks, the operation will be canceled.

  1277.         After the file name request, you will then be asked if you want
  1278.         to copy the entire file being viewed or the tagged entries.  The
  1279.         copy routine will then begin.  See the section on filtering for
  1280.         additional information on using the print to .TXT option.

  1283.         operation but remember, doing so WILL result in an INCOMPLETE
  1284.         file.  Note too that some rather large text files can be created
  1285.         (depending on the number of entries in your .DBF) which may be to
  1286.         large to into your word processor.  You may want to keep this in
  1287.         mind when creating text files.

  1290.         F3 - Send to Printer - Print Options Menu

  1294.         Options Menu.  Hi-lite the desired choice and press ENTER.  If
  1295.         this menu was reached by mistake, either select Cancel or press

  1297.         Menu include:

  1336.         The positioning of the page can be tested with this option.  Only
  1337.         the title line, header line and bottom line will be printed using

  1398.         press enter.  Some printers load data into a print buffer.
  1399.         Therefore even if the ESC key has been pressed and the print
  1400.         session canceled, the printer may continue to run.  It will do so
  1401.         until the print buffer is empty.  The only way to stop the
  1402.         printer in this situation is to turn it off.

  1404.         Prior to IGI255 Version 3.1, any key press activated the request
  1405.         to cancel printing.  Beginning with Version 3.1 the ONLY the ESC
  1406.         key will activate the request.

  1409.         Line Wrapping

  1411.         All printers are not equal.  Condensed mode of 132 characters per
  1412.         line for one printer may create a "line wrap" problem on another
  1413.         printer.  Print width of the characters can vary from one printer
  1414.         to another.  Use the Printer Setup Menu and adjust the length of
  1415.         one or more fields to solve this problem.  If necessary, re-read
  1416.         the Printer/Date Setup - Printer section of the Customizing -
  1417.         Changing the Program Defaults chapter.

  1451.         IGI255 can be a tremendous help in manipulating IGI information.
  1452.         The ability to combine files, remove duplicates, tag selected
  1453.         entries for specific purposes, filter for specific information
  1454.         and custom sorting on any field combination all create endless
  1455.         possibilities to what can be done to the data.
  1456.   
  1457.         The secret to a successful end result is proper planning.  Know
  1458.         ahead of time what the desired file or print out is to contain.
  1459.         It's very easy to start out with one thing in mind and get side
  1460.         tracked with a couple of other 'what ifs'.
  1461.   
  1462.         Just like researching any area of family history it's so very
  1463.         easy to get side-tracked from the initial goal.  Experienced
  1464.         researchers always tell us to "pick one name, decided on what to
  1465.         find (that is, marriage record, death record etc), and stay with
  1466.         it, don't try to find everybody at once".  How many times do we
  1467.         start looking for a marriage record for one surname and end the
  1468.         visit to the library looking for a death record of an ancestor
  1469.         from an entirely different line?
  1470.   
  1471.         This section deals with the heart of IGI255 - handling duplicate
  1472.         entries, tagging entries and what to do with them, filtering the
  1473.         database and the custom sort feature.  Like any good computer
  1474.         program, don't let the flexibility overwhelm you.  Pick one thing
  1475.         you want to do and learn it before trying something else.  Simply
  1476.         don't try to do to much at one time and in no time at all you
  1477.         will see the tremendous hidden power of the program.

  1479.         IGI255 was designed to manipulate the .DBF's from the view screen
  1480.         (scroll screen) without having to constantly return to the Main
  1481.         Menu.  Once a .DBF is created, filter tag and combine to your
  1482.         hearts content.  Then sort and print.

  1524.         Fairly straight forward, the initial goal of handling duplicates
  1525.         is simply to get rid of them.  It is a two-stop process.  A
  1526.         duplicate must be marked for deletion before it can actually be
  1527.         removed.  Marking the duplicates is one step.  Deleting them is
  1528.         another.  Therefore you may have marked duplicates which have not
  1529.         been deleted.  When two duplicate entries are compared the second
  1530.         one is "marked" by replacing the Code field with an asterisk (*).
  1531.   
  1532.         It is possible that duplicate entries will exist in the IGI but
  1533.         they will have different batch numbers.  You may want to retain
  1534.         both since they may have been submitted by different people and
  1535.         you would want to be aware of this.  Therefore there are two
  1536.         marking options.  One will ignore the batch numbers and one will
  1537.         not.  One option is to mark the duplicates keeping the ones with
  1538.         different batch numbers, view them and make notes as necessary.
  1539.         Then you can re-process with the option to ignore that batch
  1540.         numbers which will also mark these.
  1541.   
  1542.         The other menu options allow you to "view" the currently marked
  1543.         duplicates, "unmark" all of the currently marked duplicates, and
  1544.         "delete" (permanently remove) all currently marked duplicates.
  1545.         Again, a duplicate must be marked before it can be deleted, and
  1546.         once it's deleted it is gone for good.

  1588.         Once one or more entries are tagged, they can be printed, copied
  1589.         to a new .DBF or .TXT file, viewed, deleted (permanently removed)
  1590.         or untagged.

  1592.         NOTE:  Once an entry is tagged, it REMAINS tagged even if you
  1593.         leave the program and return at a later date (unless of course
  1594.         you select the untag option).  Other than selecting the "View
  1595.         Tagged Entries" option, there is nothing to alert you that tagged
  1596.         entries exist in a .DBF - so keep in mind that you may have
  1597.         tagged some entries in an earlier session.
  1598.   
  1599.         Viewing tagged entries is activated via the Dups/Tags menu or
  1600.         pressing ^V or the INS key while at the view scroll screen.  This
  1601.         will re-set the filter to those entries and present them on-
  1602.         screen.  If no tagged entries exist, you will be notified and
  1603.         returned to the previous filtered condition.

  1605.         Untag ALL Tagged Entries is activated via the Dups/Tags menu or
  1606.         pressing ^U while at the view scroll screen.  This will remove
  1607.         the tag from ALL currently tagged entries.

  1631.         pressed.  An extremely powerful and somewhat complex custom
  1632.         filter routine is hidden behind the Quick Query Name option.

  1637.         Quite often the ability to quickly filter on any entry that
  1638.         contains a particular surname is needed.  The Quick Query Name
  1639.         Filter provides this service and it's screen appears first when
  1640.         the F10 is pressed.

  1642.         If you pressed F10 (or ALT-F) in error and want to return to the
  1643.         view scroll screen at this point, press ESC.  If you want to
  1644.         enter the custom filter routine, leave the quick query name blank
  1645.         and press ENTER.

  1647.         Type a name in the quick query name field and press enter.  The
  1648.         filter is activated for any occurrence of that name in either the
  1649.         FATHER, MOTHER, or NAME fields.  By default this filter is NOT
  1650.         case sensitive and a partial name may be used.  For example:

  1653.         the name of William in either the FATHER, MOTHER or NAME fields
  1654.         but you know that some of the entries abbreviate William as Wm

  1658.              enter.  All the William, william, and WILLIAM 's will be
  1659.              found and presented on-screen.  Press ^T to tag them.

  1749.               notoriously SLOW.  Filter on an unsorted .DBF and copy the
  1750.               results to a new .DBF and *then* sort the new .DBF - this
  1751.               uses less time as well as less space!
  1752.   
  1753.            2) The CUSTOM filter routine's verbiage is CASE SENSITIVE.
  1754.               Filter on "HARRIS" & any "Harris" entries will be ignored.
  1755.   
  1756.            3) In the CUSTOM filter, watch your AND's and OR's - There is
  1757.               a definite difference between
  1758.   
  1759.                      NAME=Harris  .AND.  FATHER=Harris

  1778.         well as the upper case, will assure you of getting any instance
  1779.         of Coleman in either of the three fields.  There is a 254
  1780.         character limit on the search verbiage so you may have to break
  1781.         it down into 2 or more filter sessions.

  1783.         It is sometimes easier and less confusing to copy the filtered
  1784.         results of one search to a new .DBF and then add the filtered
  1785.         results of second search to that same .DBF.

  1787.         Selecting 'Quit' on the Query menu will activate the filter.  You
  1788.         will return to the view screen while the program completes the
  1789.         search.  You can then scroll the filtered entries, print them
  1790.         (F3), or create/add to a .DBF or text file (F2).

  1793.         "scroll" on a filtered .DBF sparingly.  The filter has to read
  1794.         each entry and determine if it meets the filter - again, if you

  1843.         ARROW key, the ESC key or select <quit> to return to the
  1844.         View/Print File Selection screen.

  1848.         box.  The order of the fields is based on the order they are
  1849.         picked and this also determines the sort.  Experiment!

  1868.         ENTER, the RIGHT ARROW key or INS.  A Yes-No prompt will give you
  1869.         an opportunity to cancel the request before creating the sort
  1870.         file.  Selecting "Yes" will create the sort.  Select "No" or
  1871.         press the ESC key to cancel the sort request.

  1873.         After the sort file is created, the scroll screen will appear
  1874.         using that .DBF in that sort order.

  1879.         Up to 9 sorts for each .DBF are retained at any one time.  This
  1880.         is in addition to the four fixed sorts.  Remember that these take
  1881.         up disk space.  Large .DBF files create large sort files.

  1883.         Deleting a custom sort file is as easy as hi-liting it and
  1884.         pressing the DEL key.  When the warning screen appears press DEL
  1885.         a second time to permanently remove the file or any other key to
  1886.         cancel the delete request.

  1931.         downloads. The format of  the  new  IGI was changed and in turn,
  1932.         IGI255 has been modified to  accommodate  those changes. Earlier
  1933.         versions of IGI255 will  not  process  the 1993 IGI properly and
  1934.         the initial release version 4.0  will  only process specific '93
  1935.         IGI beta versions.

  1937.         Several improvements have also  been made to IGI255 and although
  1938.         the documentation file  IGI25535.NFO  has  not been updated, the
  1939.         following is a brief summary of them...

  1942.                      Optional LDS Ordinance Codes Processing

  1944.         Reserved for the  LDS  Ordinance  information,  3  fields  of 21
  1945.         spaces  each  are  added  to  each  .DBF  created,  even  if the
  1946.         ordinance information was not downloaded. Therefore, the size of
  1947.         each .DBF will increase by 20-30%.

  1949.         If  you  do  not  download  your  IGI  text  files  with the LDS
  1950.         Ordinance information, disable this option to save space.

  1952.         At the Main Menu, choose "Setup". At the Setup Menu, hi-lite the

  1954.         (N)o.  The LDS Ordinance option may  also  be toggled on and off

  2048.         The print setup has been revamped  and  is easier to navigate. A
  2049.         formal  printer  selection  routine  is  reserved  for  a future
  2050.         version, but 2 sets  of  "print  strings" are now allowed.  Each
  2051.         set, designated as Printer #1  and Printer #2, can contain up to
  2052.         3 separate strings - 2 of which are used prior to printing and 1
  2053.         after - and each string  can  hold  enough  codes to satisfy the
  2054.         most sophisticated laser needs.

  2056.         This means that codes for 2 different printers can be stored and
  2057.         switching between them is relatively painless. Happen to have an

  2229.         name format.  This routine  will attempt to convert the "Name",
  2230.         "Father", and/or "Mother" fields to last name-first name and,in
  2231.         turn, sorts can be made accordingly.

  2234.         Scroll-Screen.  The  Setup  routine  at  the  Main  Menu  as  a

  2238.         It is possible that some names  will convert a bit strange.  If
  2239.         you detect a discrepancy, please compare IGI255's result to the

  2246.         Yes, now you can actually  change what's there.  An Edit option
  2247.         on the Setup Menu toggles the  function on and off.  In the off
  2248.         position, ENTER at  the  scroll  screen activates the "detailed
  2249.         view" of the entry and  a  TAB  invokes the ability to edit the
  2250.         entry.  In the on position, the process is reversed, ENTER=Edit
  2251.         and TAB=View.
  2252.         Caution should be taken  when  using  the edit routine.  IGI255
  2253.         often relies on specific items  in   certain  places  for  many
  2254.         of  its functions. For  example,  a  "(M)" and "(F)" is used in
  2255.         formatting the dots in the name field.  A "+" in the Relative's
  2256.         Tag  field  is   used    to    determine    the  status  of the
  2257.         "Mother" field and so forth...
  2258.

  2346.              utilizing the Last name-First name option at the Scroll
  2347.              Screen (F6), sorts can be created for months in country,

  2350.         Text/Ged Locations
  2351.         ------------------
  2352.         Three different file types  can  be  processed:  IGI text & ged,
  2353.         SDI ged, and  MI  ged.    Each  of  these  should be stored in a
  2354.         different location on  the  hard  disk and the Text/Ged Location
  2355.         option of the Main Menu is used to define where these areas are.
  2356.  
  2357.         Select Text/Ged Locations at  the  Main  Menu.    An  option box
  2358.         showing the 3 areas will  appear and as each is highlighted, the
  2359.         current location for that area  is  shown.    Select the area to
  2360.         change and press ENTER.    Type  in the new path, including file
  2361.         spec, and press ENTER.
  2362.  
  2363.         Remember to use the complete file  spec.   The program uses this
  2364.         path and file  spec  to  determine  which  files are listed when
  2365.         creating a .DBF - for example:
  2366.  
  2367.               C:\IGI255\IGI\*.*       - all files are listed
  2368.               C:\IGI255\IGI\*.GED     - only ged files are listed
  2369.  
  2370.         One of  these  areas  is  considered  to  be  active and this is
  2371.         designated by  a  small  diamond  next  to  the  name.  When the
  2372.         "Create .DBF from Text"  option  is  selected,  the files listed
  2373.         with be those as described  in  the  active path.  If an invalid
  2374.         path is used, or the directories  do  not exist, "No Files" will
  2375.         be shown in the file selection list.  A different active area
  2376.         can be designated at the  "Create .DBF from Text" screen but the
  2377.         path can only be changed at the "Text/Ged Location" option.
  2378.  
  2379.         All DBFs that are created,  even  if  they  are of the different
  2380.         file types, are still placed  in the directory where the program
  2381.         was started.
  2382.  
  2383.         The 3 areas also  allow  retention  of separate print and screen
  2384.         variables. Say, for example, that you  only  process IGI and SDI
  2385.         files but you want two different printouts for the IGI - perhaps
  2386.         one  with  place   information   and   another   with  ordinance
  2387.         information.  The IGI area can be used to store the print fields
  2388.         including the place information and the MI area can be used
  2389.         to store the print fields including the ordinance information.
  2390.  
  2391.         Using the "Text/Ged Location"  option, make the IGI area active.
  2392.         Then select Setup at  the  Main  Menu, and choose Printer.  When
  2393.         the Printer Setup Menu appears, select Field Output and make the
  2394.         appropriate changes.  Next, make the MI area active and make the
  2395.         desired changes to the Field output of that area.

  2408.         Something  along  the  line  of  "not  enough  memory"? There is
  2409.         probably a line in your CONFIG.SYS file similiar to:

  2413.         The  word  NOEMS  is  causing  the   problem   and  it  must  be
  2414.         removed...not to worry, all  it  costs  you  is  a  few bytes of
  2415.         memory.  Use your text editor  or word processor to take out the
  2416.         NOEMS.  Remember that the CONFIG.SYS  file  is simply a text fle
  2417.         so if you use a word processor, save it as a text file or
  2418.         "print to file".

  2422.              The CONFIG.SYS file contains information the computer needs
  2423.              when you turn it on,  so if you feel uncomfortable changing
  2424.              it...call me first. I should  be  able  to  easily walk you

  2429.         If you decide to try to make  your  own changes, you may want to
  2430.         save a copy of  the  current  CONFIG.SYS under a different name.

  2435.         Load the CONFIG.SYS into  your  text  editor  and  take  out the
  2436.         NOEMS.  After saving the changes,  "type"  the file to screen to

  2438.         type CLS and press  ENTER.    This should clear the screen. Then
  2439.         type the following:

  2443.         and press ENTER.  Each line  of  the  file  should appear on the
  2444.         screen, each on a line by  itself.    If  you see any strange or
  2445.         "garbage" characters, or it looks  like more than one line is on
  2446.         the same line, then something  isn't right.  Either try again or
  2447.         COPY C:\CONFIG.BU  C:\CONFIG.SYS and call me.

  2449.         If it looks ok, the machine must be re-started before the change
  2450.         will take effect.  Either press  the  CTRL,  ALT  and DEL at the
  2451.         same time, the RESET  button,  or  turn the computer off, wait a
  2452.         minute and turn it back on.

  2482.         The INSTALL.COM  program  is  designed  to  set  up  the  proper
  2483.         directory & sub-directories for IGI255, and to copy the files to
  2484.         the appropriate places. It is  a compiled form of a simple batch
  2485.         file and is designed to work with  a  floppy drive as the source
  2486.         and a hard drive as the target.

  2488.            1)  If you received the files unzipped to a floppy
  2489.                drive...Place the floppy in drive A (or B) and
  2490.                at the DOS prompt, type:

  2525.         The exception is if the install is  begun  in a directory by the
  2526.         name of IGI255 and the hard drive  to  install from and the hard
  2527.         drive to install to are the same (INSTALL C C).  Since the files
  2528.         designated for the IGI255 directory  are  already there, you may
  2529.         get a SHARE  error  or  something  similiar  that  generates the
  2530.         infamous
  2531.

  2534.         Answer A for A)bort.  DOS is  simply  telling you that you can't
  2535.         copy a file  to  itself.    R)etry  will  get  you no where, and
  2536.         I)gnore will  probably  destroy  the IGI255.EXE and IGIFHCUS.DQF
  2537.         files.

  2539.         Please note that the install routine  does  not delete the files
  2540.         from the source drive.  Therefore if they are unzipped to a hard
  2541.         drive directory other than IGI255  and  installed, there will be
  2542.         two sets of files.

  2549.         Yes you can simply copy the  IGI255.EXE  file over your old one.
  2550.         You will also want  to  place  IGI255US.DQF in the same place so
  2551.         the FHClist routine will  work....but...Version 4.4 allows for 3
  2552.         separte  paths  for  text/ged  files   and   holds  3  different
  2553.         screen/printer settings, so  run  the  install check out the new
  2554.         directory setup...
