What's new?!
Not much.. what's new with you?
Version 4.1 fixes a lot of LITTLE things that people have been
complaining about. Stealth has no major malfunctions or bugs,
just inconveniences that everyone has been writing about.
And SINCE I HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO, I went ahead and fixed
them. (please note that the people who wrote me are NOT
registered users)
1) "The STL_CFG does not have all the options in there"
No, I didn't include EVERY option available because I figured
the screen would look cramped. But I fixed it anyhow....
even though the screen DOES now look cramped.
You now can select virus scanners, listing files, etc from
there. Once you press [F10], you automatically are ready
to run Stealth!
2) "Stealth doesn't recognize my archives!"
Actually, Stealth originally just looked at the file's extension
to determine what type of archive it is. So the file 'TEST.LZH'
would be flagged as a LHA archive, even though it might have
been something else!
I figured no one would ever notice.
THEY DID. So now Stealth looks at the archive's "signature"
instead of the file's extension. That means it recognizes
misnamed files, or even damaged archives.
3) "You should 'TEST' the archive after creating it"
No way! That would add a WHOLE LOTTA time to the conversion
process. I already check to ensure the "archiver" creates
everything okay.. why should I 'test' it? If PKZIP returns
an errorlevel of 0, everything went fine!
Of course, the only way to screw up the archiving process would
be to have a power-outage, bang your head against the keyboard,
or something similar.
4) "Stealth's /ID switch is REAL slow.. especially on larger archives"
Okay.. Stealth gets the archive and dissects it byte-by-byte to
find a description filenames. I increased the buffer size to
1,000 bytes to speed up this search.
5) "It does not recognize ARJ -AV files!"
I already added "ARJ" -AV files to Stealth version 4.0c.
NOTE: Self-extracting PKZIP and ARJ files are NOT checked for
the -AV stamp, because... have you looked at one through
a binary editor! What a nightmare! Unless somebody
supplies me with EXACTLY which byte in the file to look
at, forget it.
6) "Stealth reports 'COMPRESSING TEST.ZIP' after it compresses it,
not before"
okay... clearly you have nothing better to do than notice things
like that. I fixed it.
7) "The command-line switches require a *.zip or *.* before them.
This is awkward.. you should allow: 'STEALTH /EVAL' instead
of 'STEALTH *.ZIP /EVAL'"
Okay... now you can type: STEALTH /EVAL or STEALTH /ID
You can provide ANY of the switches as the first argument.
Stealth will automatically assume you want to check ALL FILES,
though. If you just want to check *.ZIP, be sure to say:
STEALTH *.ZIP /EVAL
8) "The /MYBBS switch does not work"
There was an internal error in that switch. In order to fix it,
I would have to add about 100 lines of code, so I decided to
exclude that from the Stealth versions forever.
9) "I recently got a file: GAME5.ARC from the Satellite file network.
Your utility does not recognize it"
Yea... somebody is distributing ARC 7.0 (from Sea) archives.
And ARC 6.0 will NOT extract these. To extract the files, you must
have ARC 7.0... which I think is a commercial version.
Please write them nasty letters, not me!
10) About 200 lines of code in Stealth 4.1 is internal "secret" stuff
that I needed to help me run my BBS. If you're bored, try to
find some of the "secret" switches.
later! Dave.
