- INTRODUCTION
- VIEW-MAN is a utility to display, edit and/or print a selected file in
- both Hex and ASCII. It has a variety of options, including the ability to
- generate output that can later be printed by LASR-MAN, another utility
- used to print multiple text pages on a single sheet or paper.

- MAIN MENU
- The ╔══╡ NORMAL SEQUENCE OF VIEW-MAN OPERATIONS ╞══╗ is:

- 1.·SETUP the drive/directory on which the file to be viewed/
- edited/printed resides.
- 2.·VIEW the selected file, and/or
- 3. EDIT the selected file, and/or
- 4. PRINT the selected files.

- Any FUNCTION may be accessed from the MAIN MENU, or any option menu, by
- pressing its [highlight letter] or [ALT][highlight letter].

- SETUP MENU
- The ╔═══╡ SETUP FUNCTION ╞═══╗ MENU includes:

- DATA PATH...........Change either the drive and/or the directory path to
- the data file to be processed.
- FILE SELECT.........Select the data file to be processed.
- MONITOR.............Toggle the display between monochrome, CGA color (8
- background colors) and EGA/VGA color (16 background).
- MENU COLORS.........Change the colors of any of the eight menu types.
- SAVE OPTIONS........Save the current program option settings.

- ═>To select a SETUP OPTION, press its highlighted letter or move the
- highlight bar to it and press [ENTER].
-
- ═>To select a MAIN MENU FUNCTION, press its highlighted letter.
-
- CHANGE DATA PATH
- This option will set the drive and directory from which files may then be
- selected for processing.
- The DRIVE MENU displays all valid drives, "A" thru LASTDRIVE, as defined
- by CONFIG.SYS.
-
- Those drives that are CAPITALIZED are currently available, while the
- lower case drives are not.
-
- The current DRIVE is highlighted.
-
- ═>To select the DATA PATH DRIVE, press its highlighted letter or move the
- highlight bar to it and press [ENTER].
- The SUBDIRECTORY PICK LIST displays the available subdirectories of the
- currently defined drive/directory DATA PATH.
-
- The "accept path" option will accept the DATA PATH as currently displayed
- to the right of the DIRECTORY DATA PATH option.
-
- The ". [root dir]" option (if shown) will reset the DATA PATH to the root
- directory of the current drive.
-
- The ".. [parent]" option (if shown) will remove the last subdirectory
- that was added to the DATA PATH.
-
- Pressing [highlight letter] will move the highlight bar to the first
- subdirectory whose name starts with that letter.
-
- ═>To select one of these options or to add another subdirectory to the
- DATA PATH, move the highlight bar to the desired item and press [ENTER].
-
- FILE SELECT
- When the FILES SELECT option is selected, a PICK LIST of files from the
- selected drive/directory is displayed. All files (up to 75 per display
- screen) on the current drive-directory are displayed in the PICK LIST. If
- there are no files on the directory, a message is so displayed.
-
- ═>To change the selected drive/directory, first press [ESCAPE] and then
- press 'D' to switch to the DATA PATH option menu.
-
- ═>To select a FILE for processing, move the highlight bar to it and press
- [ENTER].
- ═>To leave the currently selected file as is, press [ESCAPE].
-
- MONITOR
- This option will toggle the display between monochrome, CGA color (8
- background colors) and EGA/VGA color (16 background).
-
- CHANGE MENU COLORS MENU
- The CHANGE MENU COLORS MENU options include the eight TYPES OF MENU
- windows used by VIEW-MAN and a default colors reset.
-
- ═>To reset all of the menu colors to the original defaults, press [D].
-
- ═>To change the colors of a MENU TYPE window, press its highlighted
- letter or move the highlight bar to it and press [ENTER].
-
- A sample menu window with the current colors is displayed. This sample
- will show how the menu will appear as the colors are changed.
-
- ═>To change the BACKGROUND COLORS, use the [UP] and [DOWN] arrow keys.
- There are sixteen background colors.
-
- ═>To change the FOREGROUND COLORS, use the [LEFT] and [RIGHT] arrow keys.
- There are sixteen foreground colors.
-
- ═>To accept the menu color change, press [ENTER] . The display will then
- be refreshed to show the changed colors.
-
- SAVE OPTIONS
- The various VIEW-MAN program option settings, such as MENU COLORS and
- CASE SENSITIVE option may be saved to an option file, VIEW-MAN.VMO, which
- is then processed when the program is loaded. These options will replace
- the program default options normally set.

- ═>To save the current program option settings, press [O] or move the
- highlight bar to it and press [ENTER]. An option file save complete
- message will be displayed. Press any key to continue.
-
- VIEW FILE
- The VIEW FILE Function has no option menu. The selected file is displayed
- in both Hex - on the left - and ASCII - on the right - with sixteen
- characters per line and twenty line per display. The character position
- in the file of the beginning character of each line is given on the left.

- VIEW cursor keys that are active include:
-
- [Pdn][ENTER]...Display the next page of the file.
- [Pup]..........Display the previous page of the file.
- [Home].........Go to the start of the file.
- [End]..........Go to the end of the file.

- VIEW options that are available and which are described below include:

- location.

- ═>To GOTO a specific file location, press [F3]. A data entry box is
- displayed on the top line position, containing the current file display
- position. Edit this display for the desired file position and then press
- [ENTER].

- ═>To cancel the GOTO option after its selection and leave the file
- display in its current position, press [ESCAPE].
- SET SEARCH

- The SET SEARCH entry window may be called on its own or it will be
- displayed when either SEARCH or SEARCH AND COUNT are selected and the
- SEARCH string has not been defined.

- The SET SEARCH options include:

- [F2] Hex/ASC...Toggle the search STRING entry between Hex/ASCII.
- [F3] Case......Toggle the CASE SENSITIVE search option between Yes/No.
- [F5] Search....Search the file for the defined STRING.
- [F6] Count.....Count the occurrences of the defined STRING in the file.
- [F10] Cancel...Cancel defining the SEARCH STRING and return to file VIEW.

- EDIT FILE
- The selected file is displayed in both Hex - on the left - and ASCII - on
- the right - with sixteen characters per line and twenty line per display.
- The character position in the file of the beginning character of each
- line is given on the left. A block cursor will appear in either the Hex
- or ASCII data, depending on the current edit mode.
- EDIT cursor keys that are active include:

- DISPLAY BLOCK CHANGE MENU

- When any edit change has been made to the current display block, and the
- display is to be changed, a DISPLAY BLOCK CHANGE menu is displayed.

- ═>To ignore the CHANGES made to this BLOCK, press [I].
- ═>To save the CHANGES that have been made to this BLOCK, press [W].
- GOTO

- The GOTO EDIT option will position the file display at a specific
- location.

- ═>To GOTO a specific file location, press [F3]. A data entry box is
- displayed on the top line position, containing the current file display
- position. Edit this display for the desired file position and then press
- [ENTER].

- ═>To cancel the GOTO option after its selection and leave the file
- display in its current position, press [ESCAPE].
- SET SEARCH

- [F2] Hex/ASC...Toggle the REPLACE STRING entry between Hex/ASCII.
- [F3] Case......Toggle the CASE SENSITIVE search option between Yes/No.
- [F7] ReplaceAll.Accept the REPLACE STRING and search the file for all
- occurrences of the defined SEARCH STRING and replace them
- with the REPLACE STRING.
- [F10]·Cancel...Cancel defining the REPLACE STRING and return to file
- EDIT.

- ═>To SET the REPLACE STRING, toggle the entry to Hex/ASCII as desired and
- then enter the desired data. When the STRING is SET, select the desired
- option.
- SEARCH AND REPLACE - REPLACE
-
- SEARCH AND REPLACE always works on the full file and will SEARCH for the
- defined SEARCH STRING based on the setting of the CASE SENSITIVE toggle.
-
- When the SEARCH AND REPLACE operation is complete, an informational
- message is displayed. Press any key to continue.
- INSERT BLOCK
-
- INSERT will insert a block of characters at the position of the EDIT
- CURSOR. The size of this block is specified in the INSERT BLOCK data
- entry window. The characters inserted are NULL, i.e, they have a Hex
- value of 00.
-
- ═>To INSERT a block of characters into the file, position the EDIT CURSOR
- at the desired position and press [INSERT]. The INSERT BLOCK menu will
- be displayed. Edit the number of character to insert at this point and
- press [ENTER]. The characters will be inserted into the file and the EDIT
- CURSOR will be positioned on the first INSERTED character.

- ═>To cancel INSERTING after it is selected, press [ESCAPE].
- DELETE BLOCK
-
- DELETE will delete a block of characters at the position of the EDIT
- CURSOR. The size of this block is specified in the DELETE BLOCK data
- entry window.
-
- ═>To DELETE a block of characters from the file, position the EDIT CURSOR
- at the desired position and press [DELETE]. The DELETE BLOCK menu will
- be displayed. Edit the number of character to delete at this point and
- press [ENTER]. The characters will be deleted from the file and the EDIT
- CURSOR will be positioned on the first character after the deleted block.

- ═>To cancel DELETEING after it is selected, press [ESCAPE].
-
- BACKUP BEFORE EDIT
- A backup of the selected file may be made before it is modified. This
- backup is saved on the same drive-directory as the selected file, with
- the same name and an extension of ".BK!". This option is highlighted if a
- backup does not exist.
-
- ═>To make a backup of the selected file be fore editing, press [B]. If a
- backup already exists, and informational message will be displayed. To
- cancel the backup, press [ESCAPE]; to continue with the backup, press any
- other key.
-
- After the backup is made, an informational message is displayed followed
- by the EDIT window display.
-
- PRINT MENU
- The ╔═╡ PRINT FUNCTION ╞═╗ MENU includes:
- ╚════════════════════╝
- PRINT FULL FILE.................Print the full file in display format.
- PRINT SELECTED..................Print a selected block of the file in the
- display format.
- OUTPUT·TO.......................Toggle where the printer output will be
- directed to. (Press [PAGEDOWN] for more
- information.
- PRINT·CONTROL·CHARACTERS........Toggle whether the ASCII print of the
- control characters will be as displayed
- or with the '¿' character. (Press
- [PAGEDOWN] for more information.

- ═>To select a PRINT option, press its highlighted letter or move the
- highlight bar to it and press [ENTER].
- OUTPUT TO
-
- Printer output is normally directed to the LPT1 port. This toggling
- option allows the printer output to be directed to LPT1-3, COM1-4, or to
- a disk file, VIEW-MAN.PRN.
-
- ═>To toggle the OUTPUT TO option, press the option's highlighted letter
- or move the highlight bar to it and press [ENTER].
- PRINT CONTROL CHARACTERS
-
- Control characters (ASCII 0-31) are usually used for printer control
- functions and not printed. However, many printers allow printing control
- characters when they are preceded and followed by specific control
- character strings. VIEW-MAN has these strings defined in the OPTION file
- for the HP LaserJet printers. These strings may be edited for other
- printers.
-
- ═>To toggle whether control characters will be printed, press [C] or move
- the highlight bar to the option and press [ENTER].
-
- NOTE: If the output is being directed to a disk file, which will later be
- printed using LASR-MAN, this option should be set to "No".
-
- PRINT FULL OR SELECTED BLOCK
- The full file, or a selected block, is printed in a format similar to the
- display format, with sixteen characters in both Hex and ASCII on each
- line. There is a three line header with file and print information, and a
- blank line is inserted after every tenth data line. No pagination (form
- feeds) are included.
-
- An action message is displayed during printing showing the character
- position printed/last character position to print.
-
- ═>To terminate printing at any time, press [ESCAPE].
-
- After printing is complete, an informational message is displayed. Press
- any key to continue.
- DISK FILE EXISTS ...?
-
- Output has been directed to a disk file, "VIEW-MAN.PRN", which already
- exists. This selection menu will determine how that output will be
- handled.
-
- ═>To erase the contents of the current printer output disk file, press
- [E].
-
- ═>To append this output to the current contents of the printer output
- disk file, press [A].
- ESCAPE PRESSED
-
- During printing, the [ESCAPE] key has been pressed.
-
- ═>To terminate printing, press [ESCAPE] again.
-
- ═>To continue printing,press any other key.
-
- PRINT SELECT
- A printing range data entry window is displayed, to allow defination of a
- block of the selected file to print.

- ═>To cancel this print option at any time during data entry, press
- [ESCAPE].

- Edit the first file position to print (the first character in the file is
- at position 0) using the action keys shown on the bottom help line. When
- complete, press [ENTER].
-
- Next, edit the last file position to print. When complete, press [ENTER].
- The selected file block will be printed.
-
- EXIT MENU
- The ╔═╡ EXIT FUNCTION ╞═╗ MENU includes:
- ╚═══════════════════╝
- RETURN TO DOS........Exit VIEW-MAN.
- ERASE BACKUP FILE....Erase the backup file, ..BK!, that exists for the
- currently selected file.

- ═>To select an EXIT option, press its highlighted letter or move the
- highlight bar to it and press [ENTER].
- ERASE BACKUP
-
- This option is only displayed if a backup file, one with an extension of
- ".BK!", for the currently selected file exists.
-
- ═>To erase the ...BK! file for the currently selected file, press [E] or
- move the highlight bar to this option and press [ENTER]. An informational
- message will be displayed. Press any key to continue.

- DISK/PRINTER NOT READY
- If an error condition is encountered while transferring data to the
- printer or to/from the disk drive, an informational message is displayed.

- ═>To cancel this operation and exit from the program, press [A].
-
- ═>To continue with the program, correct the error condition (make the
- printer ready, close the floppy diskette door, etc.) and press [R].

- The BRAND function accepts entry of the system serial number, supplied
- upon system registration.

- A REGISTRATION INFORMATION data entry window is displayed. Enter your
- company name/your name and then the system's serial number (from inside
- the front cover of the system's manual) using the alphanumeric keys and
- the cursor control keys shown on the bottom help line.

- ->To exit the program without completing the registration process, press
- [ESCAPE].

- ->To accept the name and then the registration number as edited, press
- [ENTER]. An informational message will be displayed when the branding
- process is complete for this system. Press any key to continue.

- ->If the registration number as entered is NOT valid, pressing any key,
- other than [ESCAPE], will allow re-enter of the registration number.
- Pressing [ESCAPE] will exit the program without completing the
