  43.  INTRODUCTION
  44. VIEW-MAN  is a utility to display,  edit and/or print a selected file  in 
  45. both Hex and ASCII. It has a variety of options, including the ability to 
  46. generate  output that can later be printed by LASR-MAN,  another  utility 
  47. used to print multiple text pages on a single sheet or paper. 
  48.  
  49.  MAIN MENU
  50.    The ╔══╡ NORMAL SEQUENCE OF VIEW-MAN OPERATIONS ╞══╗ is:

  52.     1.·SETUP  the  drive/directory  on  which  the  file  to  be  viewed/
  53.        edited/printed resides. 
  54.     2.·VIEW the selected file, and/or 
  55.     3. EDIT the selected file, and/or
  56.     4. PRINT the selected files.

  84. Any FUNCTION may be accessed from the MAIN MENU, or any  option menu,  by 
  85. pressing its [highlight letter] or [ALT][highlight letter].
  86.  
  87.  SETUP MENU
  88.            The ╔═══╡ SETUP FUNCTION ╞═══╗ MENU includes:
  89.                ╚════════════════════════╝
  90. DATA PATH...........Change  either the drive and/or the directory path to 
  91.                     the data file to be processed.
  92. FILE SELECT.........Select the data file to be processed.
  93. MONITOR.............Toggle the display between monochrome,  CGA color  (8 
  94.                     background colors) and EGA/VGA color (16 background). 
  95. MENU COLORS.........Change the colors of any of the eight menu types.
  96. SAVE OPTIONS........Save the current program option settings.
  97.  
  98. ═>To  select  a SETUP OPTION,  press its highlighted letter or  move  the 
  99. highlight bar to it and press [ENTER]. 
  100.  
  101. ═>To select a MAIN MENU FUNCTION, press its highlighted letter. 
  102.  
  103.  CHANGE DATA PATH
  104. This option will set the drive and directory from which files may then be 
  105. selected for processing. 
  106. The DRIVE MENU displays all valid drives, "A" thru LASTDRIVE,  as defined 
  107. by CONFIG.SYS. 
  108.  
  109. Those  drives  that are CAPITALIZED are currently available,   while  the 
  110. lower case drives are not. 
  111.  
  112. The current DRIVE is highlighted.
  113.  
  114. ═>To select the DATA PATH DRIVE, press its highlighted letter or move the 
  115. highlight bar to it and press [ENTER].
  116. The  SUBDIRECTORY PICK LIST displays the available subdirectories of  the 
  117. currently defined drive/directory DATA PATH. 
  118.  
  119. The "accept path" option will accept the DATA PATH as currently displayed 
  120. to the right of the DIRECTORY DATA PATH option. 
  121.  
  122. The ". [root dir]" option (if shown) will reset the DATA PATH to the root 
  123. directory of the current drive. 
  124.  
  125. The  "..  [parent]"  option (if shown)  will remove the last subdirectory 
  126. that was added to the DATA PATH. 
  127.  
  128. Pressing   [highlight  letter] will move the highlight bar to  the  first 
  129. subdirectory whose name starts with that letter.
  130.  
  131. ═>To select  one of these options or to add another subdirectory  to  the 
  132. DATA PATH, move the highlight bar to the desired item and press [ENTER]. 
  133.  
  134.  FILE SELECT
  135. When the FILES SELECT option is selected,  a  PICK LIST of files from the 
  136. selected drive/directory is displayed.  All files (up to 75   per display 
  137. screen) on the current drive-directory are displayed in the PICK LIST. If 
  138. there are no files on the directory, a message is so displayed. 
  139.  
  140. ═>To  change  the selected drive/directory, first press [ESCAPE] and then 
  141. press 'D' to switch to the DATA PATH option menu.
  142.  
  143. ═>To select a FILE for processing, move the highlight bar to it and press 
  144. [ENTER].
  145. ═>To leave the currently selected file as is, press [ESCAPE].
  146.  
  147.  MONITOR
  148. This  option  will toggle the display between monochrome,  CGA  color  (8 
  149. background colors) and EGA/VGA color (16 background). 
  150.  
  151.  CHANGE MENU COLORS MENU
  152. The  CHANGE  MENU  COLORS MENU options include the eight  TYPES  OF  MENU 
  153. windows used by VIEW-MAN and a default colors reset. 
  154.  
  155. ═>To reset all of the menu colors to the original defaults, press [D].
  156.  
  157. ═>To  change  the  colors of a MENU TYPE window,  press  its  highlighted 
  158. letter or move the highlight bar to it and press [ENTER]. 
  159.  
  160. A  sample menu window with the current colors is displayed.  This  sample 
  161. will show how the menu will appear as the colors are changed. 
  162.  
  163. ═>To  change  the BACKGROUND COLORS,  use the [UP] and [DOWN] arrow keys. 
  164. There are sixteen background colors. 
  165.  
  166. ═>To change the FOREGROUND COLORS, use the [LEFT] and [RIGHT] arrow keys. 
  167. There are sixteen foreground colors. 
  168.  
  169. ═>To accept the menu color change,  press [ENTER] . The display will then 
  170. be refreshed to show the changed colors. 
  171.  
  172.  SAVE OPTIONS
  173. The  various VIEW-MAN program option settings,  such as MENU  COLORS  and 
  174. CASE SENSITIVE option may be saved to an option file, VIEW-MAN.VMO, which 
  175. is then processed when the program is loaded.  These options will replace 
  176. the program default options normally set. 
  177.  
  178. ═>To  save  the current program option settings,  press [O] or  move  the 
  179. highlight  bar  to  it and press [ENTER].  An option file  save  complete 
  180. message will be displayed. Press any key to continue.
  181.  
  182.  VIEW FILE
  183. The VIEW FILE Function has no option menu. The selected file is displayed 
  184. in  both  Hex  - on the left - and ASCII - on the right  -  with  sixteen 
  185. characters per line and twenty line per display.  The character  position 
  186. in the file of the beginning character of each line is given on the left.
  187.  
  188. VIEW cursor keys that are active include:
  189.  
  190. [Pdn][ENTER]...Display the next page of the file.
  191. [Pup]..........Display the previous page of the file.
  192. [Home].........Go to the start of the file.
  193. [End]..........Go to the end of the file.
  194.  
  195. VIEW options that are available and which are described below include:
  196.  
  197. [F3] GoTo......Position the file at a specific location.
  198. [F4] SetSrch...Set/edit the search string.
  199. [F5] Srch......Search the file for a defined string.
  200. [F6] SrchCnt...Count the occurrences of a defined string in the file.
  201. [F10] Done.....Exit the VIEW Function.
  202.  GOTO
  203.  
  204. The  GOTO  VIEW  option  will position the file  display  at  a  specific 
  205. location. 
  206.  
  207. ═>To  GOTO  a specific file location,  press [F3].  A  data entry box  is 
  208. displayed  on the top line position,  containing the current file display 
  209. position.  Edit this display for the desired file position and then press 
  210. [ENTER]. 
  211.  
  212. ═>To  cancel  the  GOTO  option after its selection and  leave  the  file 
  213. display in its current position, press [ESCAPE]. 
  214.  SET SEARCH
  215.  
  216. The  SET  SEARCH  entry  window may be called on its own or  it  will  be 
  217. displayed  when  either SEARCH or SEARCH AND COUNT are selected  and  the 
  218. SEARCH string has not been defined.
  219.  
  220. The SET SEARCH options include:
  221.  
  222. [F2] Hex/ASC...Toggle the search STRING entry between Hex/ASCII.
  223. [F3] Case......Toggle the CASE SENSITIVE search option between Yes/No.
  224. [F5] Search....Search the file for the defined STRING.
  225. [F6] Count.....Count the occurrences of the defined STRING in the file.
  226. [F10] Cancel...Cancel defining the SEARCH STRING and return to file VIEW.
  227.  
  228. ═>To cancel SETting the SEARCH string, press [ESCAPE].
  229.  
  230. ═>To SET the SEARCH STRING,  toggle the entry to Hex/ASCII as desired and 
  231. then enter the desired data.  When the SEARCH STRING is SET,  select  the 
  232. desired option. 
  233.  SEARCH
  234.  
  235. The SEARCH option will SEARCH the file from the current display  position 
  236. for the defined SEARCH STRING.  The file display will have show the  next 
  237. occurrence of the SEARCH string in the upper left of the display. 
  238.  
  239. If  the  SEARCH  string  is not located,   an  informational  message  is 
  240. displayed and the file display is not changed. Press any key to continue.
  241.  SEARCH AND COUNT
  242.  
  243. The  SEARCH AND COUNT will SEARCH the entire file for the defined  SEARCH 
  244. STRING and display the total number of its occurrences. The file position 
  245. and  display are not changed.  After the count display,  press any key to 
  246. continue. 
  247.  
  248.  EDIT MENU 
  249.            The ╔═══╡ EDIT FUNCTION ╞═══╗ MENU includes:

  251. EDIT WITHOUT BACKUP.Edit the selected file.
  252. BACKUP BEFORE EDIT..Backup the selected file before editing.

  254. ═>To  select  a  EDIT OPTION,  press its highlighted letter or  move  the 
  255. highlight bar to it and press [ENTER]. 
  256.  
  257. ═>To select a MAIN MENU FUNCTION, press its highlighted letter. 
  258.  
  259.  EDIT FILE
  260. The selected file is displayed in both Hex - on the left - and ASCII - on 
  261. the right - with sixteen characters per line and twenty line per display. 
  262. The  character  position  in the file of the beginning character of  each 
  263. line is given on the left.  A  block cursor will appear in either the Hex 
  264. or ASCII data, depending on the current edit mode. 
  265. EDIT cursor keys that are active include:

  279.     [F5] Srch......Search the file for a defined string.
  280.     [F6] SrchCnt...Count the occurrences of a defined string in the file.
  281.     [F7]·SrchRep...Replace  all  occurrences of a defined string  in  the 
  282.                    file with another defined string. 
  283.     [F10] Done.....Exit the EDIT Function.
  284.  DISPLAY BLOCK CHANGE MENU
  285.  
  286. When any edit change has been made to the current display block, and the 
  287. display is to be changed, a DISPLAY BLOCK CHANGE menu is displayed.
  288.  
  289. ═>To ignore the CHANGES made to this BLOCK, press [I].
  290. ═>To save the CHANGES that have been made to this BLOCK, press [W].
  291.  GOTO
  292.  
  293. The  GOTO  EDIT  option  will position the file  display  at  a  specific 
  294. location. 
  295.  
  296. ═>To  GOTO  a specific file location,  press [F3].  A  data entry box  is

  351. The SEARCH AND REPLACE entry window is used to define both the SEARCH and 
  352. the REPLACE strings.

  354. The SET REPLACE options include:
  355.  
  356. [F2] Hex/ASC...Toggle the REPLACE STRING entry between Hex/ASCII.
  357. [F3] Case......Toggle the CASE SENSITIVE search option between Yes/No.
  358. [F7]  ReplaceAll.Accept  the REPLACE STRING and search the file  for  all 
  359.                occurrences of the defined SEARCH STRING and replace  them 
  360.                with  the REPLACE STRING.
  361. [F10]·Cancel...Cancel  defining  the REPLACE STRING and  return  to  file 
  362.                EDIT. 
  363.  
  364. ═>To SET the REPLACE STRING, toggle the entry to Hex/ASCII as desired and 
  365. then enter the desired data.  When the STRING is SET,  select the desired 
  366. option. 
  367.  SEARCH AND REPLACE - REPLACE
  368.  
  369. SEARCH  AND REPLACE always works on the full file and will SEARCH for the 
  370. defined SEARCH STRING based on the setting of the CASE SENSITIVE toggle. 
  371.  
  372. When  the  SEARCH  AND  REPLACE operation is complete,  an  informational 
  373. message is displayed. Press any key to continue. 
  374.  INSERT BLOCK
  375.  
  376. INSERT  will  insert  a block of characters at the position of  the  EDIT 
  377. CURSOR.   The  size of this block is specified in the INSERT  BLOCK  data 
  378. entry  window.  The characters inserted are NULL,  i.e,  they have a  Hex 
  379. value of 00. 
  380.  
  381. ═>To INSERT a block of characters into the file, position the EDIT CURSOR 
  382. at  the desired position and press [INSERT].  The INSERT BLOCK menu  will  
  383. be  displayed.  Edit the number of character to insert at this point  and 
  384. press [ENTER]. The characters will be inserted into the file and the EDIT 
  385. CURSOR will be positioned on the first INSERTED character. 
  386.  
  387. ═>To cancel INSERTING after it is selected, press [ESCAPE].
  388.  DELETE BLOCK
  389.  
  390. DELETE  will  delete  a block of characters at the position of  the  EDIT 
  391. CURSOR.   The  size of this block is specified in the DELETE  BLOCK  data 
  392. entry  window.
  393.  
  394. ═>To DELETE a block of characters from the file, position the EDIT CURSOR 
  395. at  the desired position and press [DELETE].  The DELETE BLOCK menu  will  
  396. be  displayed.  Edit the number of character to delete at this point  and 
  397. press [ENTER]. The characters will be deleted from the file and the EDIT 
  398. CURSOR will be positioned on the first character after the deleted block. 
  399.  
  400. ═>To cancel DELETEING after it is selected, press [ESCAPE].
  401.  
  402.  BACKUP BEFORE EDIT
  403. A  backup of the selected file may be made before it is  modified.   This 
  404. backup  is saved on the same drive-directory as the selected file,   with 
  405. the same name and an extension of ".BK!". This option is highlighted if a 
  406. backup does not exist. 
  407.  
  408. ═>To make a backup of the selected file be fore editing, press [B].  If a 
  409. backup  already exists,  and informational message will be displayed.  To 
  410. cancel the backup, press [ESCAPE]; to continue with the backup, press any 
  411. other key. 
  412.  
  413. After the backup is made, an informational message is displayed followed 
  414. by the EDIT window display.
  415.  
  416.  PRINT MENU
  417.                        The ╔═╡ PRINT FUNCTION ╞═╗ MENU includes:
  418.                            ╚════════════════════╝
  419. PRINT FULL FILE.................Print the full file in display format.
  420. PRINT SELECTED..................Print a selected block of the file in the 
  421.                                 display format.
  422. OUTPUT·TO.......................Toggle  where the printer output will  be 
  423.                                 directed to.   (Press [PAGEDOWN] for more 
  424.                                 information. 
  425. PRINT·CONTROL·CHARACTERS........Toggle  whether the ASCII  print  of  the 
  426.                                 control  characters will be as  displayed 
  427.                                 or  with  the  '¿'   character.    (Press 
  428.                                 [PAGEDOWN] for more information. 
  429.  
  430. ═>To  select  a PRINT option,  press its highlighted letter  or  move the 
  431. highlight bar to it and press [ENTER]. 
  432.  OUTPUT TO
  433.  
  434. Printer  output  is normally directed to the LPT1  port.   This  toggling 
  435. option allows the printer output to be directed to LPT1-3,  COM1-4, or to 
  436. a disk file, VIEW-MAN.PRN. 
  437.  
  438. ═>To toggle  the OUTPUT TO option,  press the option's highlighted letter 
  439. or move the highlight bar to it and press [ENTER]. 
  440.  PRINT CONTROL CHARACTERS
  441.  
  442. Control  characters  (ASCII 0-31)  are usually used for  printer  control 
  443. functions and not printed.  However, many printers allow printing control 
  444. characters  when  they  are  preceded and followed  by  specific  control 
  445. character strings.  VIEW-MAN has these strings defined in the OPTION file 
  446. for the  HP  LaserJet printers.  These strings may  be  edited  for other 
  447. printers. 
  448.  
  449. ═>To toggle whether control characters will be printed, press [C] or move 
  450. the highlight bar to the option and press [ENTER]. 
  451.  
  452. NOTE: If the output is being directed to a disk file, which will later be 
  453. printed using LASR-MAN, this option should be set to "No". 
  454.  
  455.  PRINT FULL OR SELECTED BLOCK
  456. The full file, or a selected block, is printed in a format similar to the 
  457. display  format,   with  sixteen characters in both Hex and ASCII on each 
  458. line. There is a three line header with file and print information, and a 
  459. blank  line is inserted after every tenth data line.  No pagination (form 
  460. feeds) are included. 
  461.  
  462. An  action  message  is displayed during printing showing  the  character 
  463. position printed/last character position to print. 
  464.  
  465. ═>To terminate printing at any time, press [ESCAPE].                      
  466.  
  467. After printing is complete,  an informational message is displayed. Press 
  468. any key to continue. 
  469.  DISK FILE EXISTS ...?
  470.  
  471. Output has been directed to a disk file,  "VIEW-MAN.PRN",  which  already 
  472. exists.   This  selection  menu will determine how that  output  will  be 
  473. handled. 
  474.  
  475. ═>To  erase the contents of the current printer output disk file,   press 
  476. [E]. 
  477.  
  478. ═>To  append  this output to the current contents of the  printer  output 
  479. disk file, press [A]. 
  480.  ESCAPE PRESSED
  481.  
  482. During printing, the [ESCAPE] key has been pressed.
  483.  
  484. ═>To terminate printing, press [ESCAPE] again.
  485.  
  486. ═>To continue printing,press any other key.
  487.  
  488.  PRINT SELECT
  489. A printing range data entry window is displayed, to allow defination of a 
  490. block of the selected file to print. 
  491.  
  492. ═>To  cancel  this  print option at any time during  data  entry,   press 
  493. [ESCAPE]. 
  494.  
  495. Edit the first file position to print (the first character in the file is 
  496. at position 0)  using the action keys shown on the bottom help line. When 
  497. complete, press [ENTER].
  498.  
  499. Next, edit the last file position to print. When complete, press [ENTER]. 
  500. The selected file block will be printed.
  501.  
  502.  EXIT MENU
  503.           The ╔═╡ EXIT FUNCTION ╞═╗ MENU includes:
