  31.    The introduction of the KODAK Photo CD system has been
  32.    enthusiastically greeted by computer users who are eager to use
  33.    high-quality photographic images on their desktop.  However, the
  34.    Photo CD system represents the first widely adopted use of
  35.    multisession CD ROM technology.  And because it is so new,  there
  36.    has been some confusion about the CD ROM drives, related components,
  37.    and software required to incorporate Photo CD technology into the
  38.    desktop environment.  This guide is intended to help clear up some
  39.    of the confusion.

  41.    Eastman Kodak Company has tested the drives, related components, and
  42.    device driver software listed in this guide for compatibility with
  43.    the KODAK Photo CD format.  Each drive has at least limited
  44.    compatibility with the Photo CD format if it is used with the
  45.    appropriate components and software (listed in the two columns
  46.    adjacent to the drive column) or, when it is part of one of the
  47.    configurations described below.  There is no guarantee that at the
  48.    drives listed will work properly with your computer
  49.    configuration.  The correct operation of the CD ROM drives and
  50.    controllers with your computer will depend on the correct
  51.    version of device driver software and compatible computer peripheral
  52.    hardware.  Substituting different drives, components,  and software
  53.    may cause incompatibility.

  78. *3)  Reading Photo CD Images
  79.

  81.    In  order to access Photo CD images on a computer, users need the
  82.    following compatible components++:
  83.  
  84.  1. A CD ROM drive capable of reading Mode 2 Form 1 data
  85.     (Photo  CD image data is recorded in a CD ROM format known as Mode 2
  86.     Form 1).
  87.  2. A CD ROM controller (also known as a host adaptor or controller board).
  88.  3. A cable to connect the drive to the controller.
  89.  4. Device driver software (low-level device driver and foreign file system
  90.     driver) capable of reading Mode 2 Form 1 data.
  91.  
  92.    Together, these four components form a Photo CD-compatible  CD  ROM
  93.    drive subsystem.  Each component of the subsystem must be capable of
  94.    supporting the Photo CD format. Customers must contact the drive
  95.    manufacturers for specific information about the Photo CD
  96.    compatibility of their CD ROM drive subsystem before purchasing
  97.    those items.
  98.  
  99.    In addition to the hardware and driver software listed above, you
  100.    will also need application software capable of accessing photo CD
  101.    images, Kodak offers a family of Photo CD-enabled software packages
  102.    that can access, store, import, and enhance Photo CD images and
  103.    high-quality digital images in other popular file formats.

  106.  Multisession Drives
  107.  ___________________
  108.  
  109.    The Photo CD system offers the considerable advantage of allowing
  110.    images to be appended to a disc in multiple recording sessions.
  111.    Users who want to take advantage of that capability will need
  112.    multisession drives to read the data appended to discs in
  113.    subsequent recording sessions.  The drive subsystem kits listed in
  114.    Tables A.1 and A.2 have been determined to be fully capable of
  115.    reading multisession Photo CD images and are licensed in our Photo
  116.    CD branding program.  The drive and controller combinations listed
  117.    in Tables B.1 and B.2 consist of Photo CD branded CD-ROM drives that
  118.    have been tested with other controller and software combinations.
  119.    Look for the Photo CD logo on these drives.

  124.    multisession drives.  At this time, the drives listed in this
  125.    guide will not be able to play data XA audio that will be present on
  126.    certain kinds of Photo CD discs later in the year.

  129.   Single Session Drives
  130.   _____________________

  132.    There are Photo CD-compatible CD ROM drive subsystems available today
  133.    which can access images written to a compact disc during a single
  134.    recording session. These drives are known as single session drives.
  135.  
  136.    The  single session CD ROM drive subsystems listed in Tables C.1 and
  137.    C.2 offer limited capability in reading Photo CD images.
  138.    Specifically, the single session CD ROM drive subsystems will read
  139.    Photo CD images recorded onto a Photo CD disc in ONE session.
  140.    However, these drives will not recognize data appended (i.e., added)
  141.    to disc after the initial recording session.  A single session drive
  142.    is suitable if you want to begin working with Photo CD images
  143.    immediately and you are able to limit data recording to one session
  144.    per disc.
