Third and fourth photographs in a sequence showing the construction of the four-masted Schooner Dornfontein at Portland, New Brunswick in 1917 and 1918. The vessel was built by the Marine Construction Co.
3. By May 7, 1918 the vessel is nearing completion. Planking is almost completed, the decks are laid, and the two deck houses have been built. The vessel has been built parallel to the waters' edge which mean it will be launched sideways.
4. The vessel was registered in Saint John on July 8th. This photograph shows the Dornfontein loaded and being towed out to sea. Note the very large deck load of timber. The funnel of the tug is just visible behind the jigger mast. This vessel had a very short life. On August 2, 1918, it was burned by a German submarine off Brier Island in the Bay of Fundy.
