Most newspapers of the 19th century published extensive information on shipping. Arrivals and clearances, as well as reports on launchings, accidents at sea, and shipwrecks were often covered in detail.
This column on "Shipping Intelligence" appeared in the Nova Scotian for October 13, 1842. It lists vessels which have arrived and cleared at the port of Halifax, N.S. The vessel's name, rig, master's name and cargo are all given. For vessels entering the harbour, the length of the voyage is also noted.
Note under the title "Manchester House" an advertisement by Joseph Bell for merchandise just received from England. Just below, James Cochran has also advertised for sale "Tobacco and Onions" received from New York and Boston.
